1. Hats off to my very very clever guitarist (well really I'm his bass player rather than he being my guitarist)... I had left over from an old project a small front baffle cut for a 12" speaker and dual-ported... after a deal involve exchange of parts for labour the aforementioned guitarist agreed to knock up a cab around the baffle board which I could then finish to suit. I was expecting a basic box which I would cover with the usual carpet fabric. Well I got it at rehearsal tonight and the workmanship is so good I am going to leave it uncovered! I'll probably stain or varnish for durability but definitely no carpet. Beech ply, solid construction, perfectly made, just needs a back and the cabinet hardware plus the recently acquired 12" neo speaker from Mykesbass and my 300w 1x12 practice/small gig cab will be ready Will post some pics if anyone's interested. ficelles
2. Rock on Mr King, top man for his work for the charity and for not doing his own PR through it. I'm sure Mark has a fair selection of basses but I bet letting that Status go is no small thing... ficelles
3.
It'd be interesting to see which is more popular too - lined or unlined (unlined for me)...?
I have one of each. Nice though the Jazz defret (i.e. lined) is, it's the unlined Warwick Corvette I pick up most at home. The instrument I play out most is the WAV - unlined obviously but with a sometimes irritating array of dots on the fingerboard so not entirely plain either. ficelles
4.
I was playing in a band where I needed to use a 5 string tuned in the usual way (BEADG) and also detuned to ADAD - but I only had one 5 string so just used the BEAD strings on a regular StingRay 4 stringer. As I have a brass nut on the SR4 I just let the strings sit on top of the nut grooves. The action was a bit high, but not playable. Why don't you try that, just to see what it's like? Maybe it will be fine...
I think I've decided a CRM5 is the way forward ficelles
5.
Ooh, can I have first dibs?
Yours, but really courtesy of Mykesbass rather than moi as he recycled them in my direction... PM me your address and I'll post them off to you. ficelles
6.
OTOH, I wouldn't necessarily do my first experiment on your nice Jazz
Sound advice methinks Sat looking at the nut earlier and thought do I really want to start filing bits off it? So I guess there's a 5-string flatwound set for recycle... ficelles
7. I only play fretless, don't own a fretted bass. ficelles
8. Sold Mike a db/cello pickup and he paid instantly, a pleasure to deal with as always! ficelles
9.
New Bjork tune. The last minute is barking mad. http://www.slantmagazine.com/house/2011/06...rk-crystalline/
Just listened to this... excellent trippy track with the Sugarcubey one in great voice then the end wraps your brain up into a crumpled piece of inky paper and slams it against the wall. Listen to it on headphones. ficelles
10. Najwa Karam. Not quite sure why but I am really really into this. ficelles
11.
The serial number is not recognised on the serial number checker website
I didn't know about this site, lucky my MIJ serial # passes the test! I must put it on the bass soon ficelles
12.
I was just going to confirm that the 1915 Rickenbacker Stingray is perfect for the job but you pulled the post
Yeah I had a sudden vision of a stick going into a hornet's nest ficelles
13. Bought a 12" driver and it arrived not only well packed but also with a complimentary set of Status Hotwires! Excellent chap. ficelles
14. Anyone got a 4-string in BEAD tuning? Mykesbass kindly recycled a set of Hot Wires in my direction and it turned out to be a 5-string set, with no 5-string these days kinda tempted to do the BEAD thing on my Jazz defret but of course it means re-cutting the nut. If anyone can relate good/bad experiences with trying this it would be useful before I get the chainsaw out... ficelles
15.
They've had a hard paper round if they are in their mid-twenties.
They do say forty is the new twenty... Which puts me in my 30s, damn still too old to apply ficelles
16. Erykah Badu again. Classic less-is-more groove bass. ficelles
17. Get the track. Get your bass. Play your bass along with the track until it sounds right. ficelles
18. A nice 4/4 student Viola, 15.5" 2-piece back, good condition although with signs of use, soundpost intact, all in good working order. No maker's name or label visible. The instrument comes with a couple of usable bows (one needs some attention) & rosin, in a good-condition modern case. £85 + shipping or buyer collect. ficelles
19.
For sure... that '79 natural finish fretless Fender Precision in Fender hard case I bought new back in '79 (from Andertons) is one I really wish I'd hung on to ficelles
Sorting through some old folders the other day I actually found the receipt for this - a brand new USA fretless P in the Fender case, natural finish, rosewood board, shop price £259 ficelles
20. A couple of pickups on offer as they just won't play nicely with my difficult bridge and I'm going to go for something that isn't wing mount. TM (Taco Man) pickup - similar to KK Bassmax. £50 shipped (within UK). SOLD J-Tone "Reds" double paddle pickup, for either bass or cello. £20 shipped (within UK). SOLD Both in good working order. ficelles
21. Nancy Ajram - Betfakar Fi Eih ficelles
22. Actually I'm on iTunes on Bats & Butterflies by Sarana VerLin. Maybe Richard Burley's Counting Magpies as well if it made it on. I think we are probably in the folk genre or something similar but I don't have iTunes... ficelles
23. Seymour Duncan Paranormal Bass DI. An active DI box with footswitchable 3-band EQ and a footswitchable contour for slap (not that I slap, but it's a nice EQ preset for cutting mids and boosting LF & HF). Jack in, XLR and/or jack out so you can split the signal between PA and backline if you want. Lacks a volume control maybe but there's usually one on the bass ficelles
24. I may need to ship a relatively high value (£2.5k) instrument internationally... I usually use interparcel.com but they seem to have a £1k insurance limit - anyone know a courier who will ship internationally and insure for £2.5k? ficelles
25.
They won't pay out even if you pay for the insurance - musical instruments are explicitly excluded from enhanced compensation. Do yourself a favour and boycott ParcelForce - they are absolutely no use to you, the insurance mis-selling gits.
Holy feckin' moly! I sent a 70-year-old uke banjo via parcel farce 48 last week and paid for enhanced insurance, good thing it got there in one piece! ficelles
