I never hated any of the sh*t jobs I've had as much as I hated playing in bands.
Ha ha! Why do it then!? -
Hi all Had another storming gig last night. Place was full, everybody rocking, good night all round. However, had someone come up to me again and ask 'why don't you smile on stage, you look like you don't want to be there?'. Now I have had this said many times before, usually it's 'why do you look like you're about to jump off stage and hit somebody?'. People who know me know that I'm a pretty fun loving guy who enjoys a good laugh, but it really is starting to concern me that punters who haven't seen us before just think 'it's that band with the miserable bass player'. I do try to show that I'm enjoying myself, it's just that I'm blessed with one of those faces which has a default look of disinterest! Mean and moody, I'm doing very well. Any tips?
Next time somebody says that ask them if they smile constantly when they are doing their job.
I doubt there job would be as much fun as playing in a band! -
I dance/move/groove a bit when i play but not like that. I say we should make a pact and all dance like this at every gig we do! Who's in!?

As in a rock, grunge, britpop type thing. Do you get lots of gigs? Good reception etc? I've been asked to start one with some people so just checking out experiences.

Neil Murray is one of my first and biggest influences. Which when you consider i started playing when i was 14 in 1993! A teenager in Grunge times! Is remarkable! This is probably my favourite line! It's just cool as f***, groovy, heavy, melodic. Everything you need to play bass! http://youtu.be/t_uUQ3j1KFw -
I can see I'll have to do a note-for-note demonstration! Although when I've played it in the last 15 years, I've tried to stick to the recorded version, when I recorded the song the fills were just improvised, so on another take they would have been different. If it's played too fast, which is often the case, some of the fills become impossible to play properly, which is frustrating. Although I am not an expert jazz, blues or funk player, I had enough of those influences to bring some of that to my rock playing, particularly in 1978-82 Whitesnake, as the songs allowed for interesting bass parts. When the songs don't permit that style of playing, which is mostly the case, I have to be more straight-ahead. Neil
If you really are Neil Murray......then turn this water into wine!.......wait a minute...that was Jesus wasn't it?........nevermind....carry on! -
Have you got the marbles to play this violin bass?
That was astonishing. Despite the gimmicry it was musically quite pleasant too.
I think gimmicry is a bit harsh. I don't think it has been done as a gimmick! -

I remember that shaun baxter guy did some jazz metal in the 90's but it was kinda second hand Vai! Not that it was bad it's just Vai back in the late 80's/90's was doing some genius stuff! -

Where is the jazz in jazz metal? -
Voted. All nice pieces. I was quite surprised how similar some were though in terms of arpeggio acoustic guitar styley. There must be a shared consciousness connecting some bass players. I will enter next time, judging by my playing at rehearsal the other night (first time I've touched a bass in a month) it will be sh*t!
I love them. The track (new single) is funkier than their previous stuff, which also has that slightly retro feel without ever sounding derivative (that said, it can be fun playing 'spot the reference' with their music). They're really good players - the bassist plays/sounds a little like Chris Squire to my ears - and the 'D' and Corsicana Lemonade are both well worth a listen.. A couple of other things they've done.. (prev. single and a live instrumental - with a nod to Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac?)
Brilliant. Think I have a new favourite band!
Am I the only one that finds the current 'flowery/warbling' vocal's tiresome. And while I'm on the subject, Rihanna's 'work' single features Drake who appears to be singing a strange collection of notes that has nothing to do with her song;he must have recorded that piece before he heard the actual track?
God no you ain't the only one! As for rihanna she sounds like she has a f***in peg on her nose!

You will have to forgive my ignorance. I just heard this on the radio. I thought it was from the 70's.It's modern! Never heard of em! Class! http://youtu.be/F6iXz7WQADE
With a basic bass line, the bass steers the whole song. It has a profound effect on the sound of the chords. You can change the inversion depending on your note choice. You can change the mood by playing an ascending line to make it uplifting or a descending line to make it more sad. We play harmony as well as bass. By legato, I'm thinking probably more single long notes that ring under a whole melody line. Maybe legato is the wrong word.
It's kind of music theory 101 and legato is the wrong word but I get what you mean now!
-
The original was written and performed by Waters. There are plenty of songs I play E on the seventh fret as that's the direction that the melody is leading. When you play legato notes under a melody, your note choice is very important.

Why? Why is it very important when legato and not staccato? And why when under a melody as opposed to not?
I still want to know the answer to this!
-
It's just during the chorus. 1:38 on here.
Personally, I don't think that it is interesting enough musically for it to make a difference!
