I have scattered around various places the following.. Ashdown MAG300/15 Line 6 LD300 Ashdown EB180/15 But I think a combo is more of a hassle than a small head and a 1x15 or 4x10 or whatever because you've got the worst of both worlds in terms of size and weight.. There are plenty of chunky combos out there.. Carvin 600, Ashdown 575/4x10 - there even was an Ashdown 8x10 combo.... Cheers Mark
Thank you kindly.
So when DO you use your rig? I would have thought that a pub gig without PA support is one of the most demanding jobs that backline amplification is asked to perform; surely for bigger gigs, you'd have a proper PA, so backline would be just for stage monitoring. Or am I missing something?
You're disregarding the "Can't be arsed carting my rig about" bit. At the volume we will play at when just using vocal PA. With nowt being miked up. I would like a combo that would do that job. Done it in the past, worked fine. I was also saying you never see them on here!

Is it me or are there never any decent combos for sale on here! Just Rigs and cabs. I've got a rig. What i need is a decent combo for playing pubs with just backline and vocal PA. Can't be arsed carting my rig about!
The Peter Hook quote made me laugh. Top!! I've not limited myself to stuff that's outside my comfort zone as I've done some singer songwriter stuff which was great and I certainly was playing very laid back. I thought that was fantastic fun. By the same token I've done stuff which has been more prog type material with tonto time changes in it. That was a brilliant challenge and one I relished as I'd never done that sort of stuff before. I tend just to pick stuff I tend to like and see if it'll work. I quite often don't hear the bass on a song at all if it's really simple, I tend to hear what I'd play. That might be the issue. Quite a lot of the time that isn't that different, sometimes it really is very different. On a default setting though for types of bands, I'm not sure if I have one to be honest. Maybe that in itself is the problem. I don't know. By the same token, because I listen to just about anything, I like lots of very, very different material, though this is in itself is not without it's problems. Whilst I think, say Tool are geniuses, I'm not entirely sure if I'd enjoy playing bass for them with all that unison riffing. Whilst that's probably an example that wouldn't be true if put to the test, I'm just trying to illustrate a point. If I didn't enjoy playing in a band or it's material, I just wouldn't do it. Just as paradoxically, just because I like a band's music doesn't mean I'd enjoy playing it. I hope that kind of makes sense. It's just been a very frustrating time and in many ways, quite demoralising for me as I just want to play music I enjoy and have a reasonable amount of expression over what I play. Probably those things are mutually exclusive and I just haven't learned that lesson properly.
Don't feel like you have to defend yourself. Music is personal to the musician! -
If you can't reach the notes i guess singin octave lower, but it may sound lame. If its just two part harmony if you sing a third or sixth below (standard harmony) it should sound ok

What are you listening to right now?

Rediscovering Moloko at the min. Unique! -
I just don't rate Sheehan. Sounds like a guitarist on Bass. Apart from his widdling his lines bore me

Depends on your personality and how pedantic you are to whether its annoying or not. I know tonnes of theory (college/uni), infact i'm a nerd for it. I've just bought Schoenbergs book which is immense. I have notice the trends and it doesn't bother me. I probably indulge in it to. It is irrelevant really unless you are scoring something for someone else to play. I don' think there needs to be condescension for people who do it!

Do the basslines/players on these tunes have flats on?
Lord Sausage replied to NJE's topic in General Discussion
Definitely not flats. Looks like you just have to be really relaxed. And you probably don't need Slash to do the guitar solo.
What a dull and lifeless version. Until Slash showed up! -
Stuff the band have wrote, nothing cool about being in a covers band.
RUNS

Nothing cool about being cool!
Last time i saw RW he also had Trevor Horn playing bass on some songs. I think it was Robbie's comeback gig a few months ago at the Electric Proms. Bloody dreadful version of Video killed the radio star at the end of the night. He also looked like he had Clarky on guitar lol. EDIT: Seems like it was a year ago so im a bit behind the times. Never really paid much attention to him since he split with Guy.
Never paid any attention to him!

Someone has just given me a little Marshall head call a Lead 12. I have no speakers at home to try it out(All at fellow band members). Anyone know anything about them?

I would have bought it if he hadn't unscrewed it all to show its bits. Shame!

So who talks to you when you get off stage?
Lord Sausage replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Groupies for me! Hurrah! However this is because I always make sure I join bands full of ugly bastards! Saying this the best one i had was when i was 18. I was playing bass in a big production of Jesus Christ Superstar. At the time i had very long hair and a bit of beard. The guy playing jesus had short ginger hair so was wearing a wig and wig beard. After all the shows in the bar area after i got all the attention. Loads of people came over saying what a great singer and performer i was....i took all the plaudits and said thanks. It use to really piss the Jesus actor off. Ha ha. One back for the bass players. -

Songs that get you out of a bad mood..
Lord Sausage replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
There's loads, but at the moment its Money for Nothing by Dire Straits. Rediscovered it recently and can't get enough of it. Its that riff and vocal delivery. Cool as ya like!! -
Not very free when it costs a tenner. Also i think it would have been about £15 too much to watch that shower!
-
When i was younger i got tendonitis (sic) a couple of times thru over playing, and probably bad technique at the time( i used to proper twat the the strings). It bloody hurt and made me sort it out!

Improvisation on Bass - Completely Pointless
Lord Sausage replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I do read, but when you get sat infront of a piece of music that is written in treble clef, above the maximum range of the standard bass guitar because the "composer" thought that is how bass is notated past the 12th fret, you have to act pretty fast. In this case, it was an emergency session which i was called to do the day before the gig (i imagine the other guy dropped out when he saw the bass part!) but luckily the MD just told me to follow the style directions and play along to the chords written above. Needless to say, the ability to improvise stylistically came in VERY useful on that gig, and a few others like it. All I'm saying is, it's not as black and white as IT'S COMPLETELY POINTLESS, or IT'S BLOODY BRILLIANT. I imagine you already know this though, and are just winding people up for the fun of it
Couldn't agree more! The amount of session gigs were i've been given friggin PVG or piano parts or parts written in treble clef is unreal. This is for proper gigs aswell playing theatres like manchester opera house and venues of the like. You do have to adjust. Luckily for me i'm arrogant and single minded and do what i want including the dreaded improvisation, but use my skills and experience to fuse it so it fits. (apart from on one occasion where i kept slipping the welcome to the jungle riff into a song). -
