1.
JJB was playing a very shiny new black jazz bass with maple neck on one of the clips.
Miming...The Stranglers rarely took their own kit to TV performances, using whatever they could scrounge.Hence the Jazz, and the aforementioned use of a Rickenbacker on a German TV show.
2.
When you say JJB do you mean jean jacques burnel ? Ive seen both of them punk progs but not a sniff of the god of bass (JJ) let alone playing a jazz and rick..
Indeed.I don't recall seeing JJB on the Punk Brittania programmes either, but his name was brought up earlier.
3.
Right then.Hooky used a Hondo,Foxton used an Ibanez (at first). Severin borrowed whatever the support band were using,(at first). JJB rarely took his own kit to TV and video shoots, hence the Jazz. There's Youtube footage of JJB using a Rickenbacker on a German TV show. I stood next to Gaye Advert once. She was all sweaty. Also Sid using a Rickenbacker at the start of The Great Rock and Roll Swindle.
4. Without getting too technical ( it's my day off) all XLR cables are balanced, stereo ( TRS,tip/ring/sleeve) quarter inch jacks are balanced, regular mono jacks aren't.Gold is technically a better conductor of electricity than nickel, however,it is also softer and wears off on stuff that is constantly being plugged in and unplugged. Soooooooooooooooooooooooo, apart from the colour ( you bought a blue cable????) your cable is fine.
5.
We play small pubs with a small PA, and have never used a sound guy.
What sort of mixer? Likely at smallpub level you could just go straight into a mixer amp without the need for DI.
6. Never disposed of an instrument ever.Even the useless ones.Amps is a different matter.Part exchanging a Selmer Zodiac valve monster for an H+H VS Musician was not a good move.
7. Many of the gigs I play are Punk all dayers/weekenders,and backline is ususally provided. I don't ususally complain when it's my bands turn to provide the backline. Then again,I am big enough and nasty looking enough to prevent people from taking the piss..
8. I hope the relicking thing isn't going out of fashion,I 've spent 30 years getting my Fender P the roadworn look..
9. You forgot the black/mirror scratch plate option?
10. I regret keeping my first bass..Kays EB copy.Sh#ter than sh#te.
11. JJ Burnell. JJ Burnell. JJ Burnell. JJ Burnell. Lemmy. Sorted.
12. Tokai's are excellent.I have one.And they hold their value well.
13. Don't change them, but take new ones just in case. I think I've made my views on Rotosh*te clear by now..
14. BIGGER
15. I look a bit like the bloke over there on the left.
16.
We did a 2 hour radio session the other night and they were just left outside in the van by themselves with instructions to text if they needed anything. C
There are some SERIOUS child neglect issues, verging on abuse here.Abandon ship. I do take my daughter to gigs occasionally, but she's 25.
17. Thumbys are for holding plectrums.
18.
oh and yes I realise my thumb rest is wrong because the whole bass is backwards.
No it isn't...
19. In theory,that's a good deal.
20.
Similar experience to JTUK, in our year long search for a singer we auditioned this nice looking girl of about 25ish, recommended by friends. Anyway, launch into track 1... she could have been on stars in their eyes as a Nina Hagen double. managed to get through the song by biting the inside of my cheek to stop from laughing out loud, (IIRC it was kiss's rock and roll all night if you can imagine the scene) and could tell that the rest of the guys were having similar problems keeping a straight face. Everyone is too embarrassed to say anything so we start the 2nd song. Then the 3rd. 4th. 5th. I swear that she never sung a note, just narrated the lines in that croaky burlesque monotone. Thanked her for her time and showed her the door, then let all the pent up laughter out. Kinda regret it a bit because we were just looking to have a bit of fun doing pub covers. Could have been something interesting...
Got any contact details for her?
