1. Be friends with the drummer. Do as much recording as possible.
2.
What is this 'PA' of which you speak?
I suggest we speak of it in a very loud voice..
3. What do the rest of the band think? Nice spanner, btw.
4. I've done a lot of sound engineering.Personally I prefer to DI the amp, because that's what I'd want as a bassist. However, just as there are crap engineers out there, there are crap bassists who have no idea how to set their amp up,there are crap bass amps, and sometimes DI'ing the bass is simply a more practical option. Also,if you could hear your sound from the PA,bear in mind you're behind it and what it sounds like 20 metres in front will be very different. Sound waves from low frequencies are long.Simply ask your next engineer if he/she can DI the amp.If they say no,ask them why.And NEVER piss the engineer of, even if they're an incompetent twat, some of them are cynical bitter twisted people who are likely better connected than you are and can do serious damage to your reputation.....The voice of experience!
5. Karoake for the Bassist.
6. Not good.I've crossed everything I can for you.Is he still your friend?
7.
Don't suppose Stradivarius ever used ply
Or pickups..I think the type - and quality - of the wood used will make a subtle difference, but by the time it's gone through an amp, some speakers,a dodgy SM57 and a PA to an audience whose interest in audio perfection has been compromised by alcohol, who is going to know?
8. Ugly.But I doubt there's a left handed option so I can ignore it.
9. I use my fingers to hold the plectrum.
10. Plenty of instruments in my local Cash Converters, although that may say more about Gloucester..
11.
As you were 3 years old..no one would pay 200GBP for your skills. I honestly hope this has changed too
I wish...
12. I think the simple answer is they're now old enough to be considered vintage.Although I still can't get my head round the fact that a bass I bought for £200 when it was 3 years old is now worth lots of money.
13. Or possibly they could just all be idiots.
14.
If you drop a b*ll*ck onstage...glare at the guitarist BEFORE he glares at you.
I am so using that one.
15. If you make a mistake, play it twice. That way people wil think it's some complex jazz structure rather than you f*cked up.
16. Personally I find flat radius fingerboards far less comfortable to play, which is one reason I always seem to gravitate back to Fenders.
17. Thanks for the response all,it's definately a misaligned bridge.Looks like the grooved saddles is the way to go.
18.
I would have thought sorting the bridge would be the route to take... unless you're not happy with the pup(s)
Changing the pickups seems a lot easier! Plus I do like bar magnet pickups.
19. My orginal 78 Fender Precision is finally getting some well deserved TLC after 20 years of hard work.It has a slightly misaligned bridge which puts the E string over one of the poles on the pickup which makes the E louder than the other strings. (Not an inherant problem for my style of playing...) I had a similar problem with my Tokai P which I dealt with by replacing the pickups with passive EMG's with bar magnets.I'm considering the same route with the Fender, but I'm wary of altering what has become a vintage instrument.I'd like to hear from anyone who has experience of active EMG's on a Fender? Is it worth doing?
20.
Good to see others had issues with the E strings, wasn't just me then
Had more than a few break.
21.
Yeah - Jaco sounded sh*t with them, didn't he?!
F*cking awful...
22. Rotosound are crap.Wouldn't use them even if I was paid to.DR's on stage,Daddario's for everything else.
23. Had a brand new Marshall 4x10 blow a speaker halfway through a gig. Shortly after this the guitarist had a brand new Marshall JCM 800 die halfway through a gig.I think Marshall may have had a quality control problem in the early 90's.Haven't used Marshall since. Also don't use Rotosound for the same reason.
24. Never,I repeat,NEVER get rid of anything with Moog written on it.You will regret it.Trust me on this.
25. Nice one, muchly thanks both.Wondered why it was such a quiet bass.
