I have a lefty Tokai T bird,no comparison with Gibsons or Epiphones because they refuse to make lefty ones...The Tokai is an extremeley well made instrument and sounds great, but neck heavy is a major understatement, headstock diving towards the floor permanantly is a bit of a problem.Using the fretting hand to prop the thing up does make it harder to play.

Has your bass playing ever gotten you...
Spike Vincent replied to teen t-shirt's topic in General Discussion
Yes.Several times, although as I'm still with the last one 15 years later and she's in the room it might not be wise to go into detail. -
Richard Meyrick in Usk. www.richardmeyrickguitars.co.uk Also Jonny Kinkead in Bristol,no personal experience but good enough for the Stranglers... www.kinkeadguitars.co.uk

I used a TNT combo for much of my early career and had no complaints about it,until I ended up in a band with 2 guitarists with Marshall stacks, when I traded it for a Peavey MK6 400w stack. The Black Widow speakers are far superior to the Sheffield ones, and as an aside I've used a lot of Peavey PA gear quite happily. Also the rehersal studio we've just started using has a ratty TNT combo which I'm using in preference to the MK 6..

They weren't a free form jazz band,by any chance? There'as always scope for a little personalisation, but if you're being paid to play someone else's stuff, then that's what you do.

Breaking a string at a gig - has this happened to you?
Spike Vincent replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Regularly had strings break when I used to use Rotosounds in the late 80s but never on a gig. I assume the quality is better now, they'd usually break while tuning them up for the first time or I'd come back to the bass the next morning and find one broke in the night. Add in the regular dead or corroded strings in a set and I stopped using them even though I loved the tone. Switched to Ernie Balls and never had a problem.
In 30 years I have broken 2 strings, one E and one D.Both at gigs, both Rotosound which I wouldn't use again if they paid me. -
What If There Was A Bass Agony Aunt?
Spike Vincent replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
Dear Bass Agony Aunt Why do the other band members pull attractive groupies, while I get blokes asking me what strings I use?
It's funny because it's true.... -
Somewhere in between Lemmy and Jah Wobble.
Not a good idea to reform, even for a reunion, mostly, IME. If the guys have been busy in that time, then you'll likely have met up before on a gig at some point, but if they haven't played hardly at all...I'd steer well clear and it would be a recipe for ..I was going to say disaster, but maybe dissapointment is a better word. I recently did a 20th anniversary so the older players that they used through that time came out to play. I wasn't there at the beginning of the formation but the old muso turn out was quite good.. Unfortuately, the playing wasn't and the name of the band is still working, so this was not at ALL helpful if seeing them for the 1st time. Nice idea and sentimental and all that...but a musical flop... If it is fun and a joke, then ok...but beware...
We've all been playing constantly since 1997,myself largely studio bound and the drummer touring Europe with a punk band, the Guitarist/vocalist moving 200 miles away. I'm not expecting anything from this, but it was nice to play at live volume levels rather than through a pair of Sennheisers. We shall see. -
Having been persuaded to reform for a one off gig in october,we finally got round to actually rehersing.I haven't done much basswise in all those years, and it was certainly an interesting experience. The upside is I can still play at 360+BPM,and my callouses are not a problem. The downside is my fretting fingers aren't as supple as they used to be,(I'm 47...) and my Fender needs a new jack socket, and the drummer (who ironically is the one who's been playing in the time off) still can't keep time! Anybody else had this long a lay off?

Shame it's fretless.

So it's trivial and it should be what I want..
Mirror - like Phil Lynot.
Definately.Maybe not on a Jazz, but on a Precision it's a good look.My Precision had one on it when I bought it,honest..And a metal scratchplate makes a subtle difference to the sound too. -
Good Times - Chic.I have no idea why.

Herco flex 50's for me.You do lose a bit of the attack compared to hard plastic, but they last forever. Some of mine are over 20 years old.

Who is your most inspirational bassist?
Spike Vincent replied to Chris2202's topic in General Discussion
JJ Burnell, and I'm frankly surprised only 2 other people have said the same. -
All the songs my current band do are in the same key anyway,so I'd bash out an E chord.Works every time.

And you could sleep in it to save money on hotels.
it would look great with one stack either side of your drummist!
Stack them both in front of the drummer.Reminds me Back in the Day (as I believe the youths say now,I am quite old) when I had a 1K rig comprising 2 1x 18,s and 2 1x12s.This may have been a contributary factor in spending 10 years of my life with a spinal injury.
I've found it quite exciting being a left handed bassist. There's always that initial sense of anticipation when you walk into a guitar shop. Two things usually tend to happen 1) You ogle at the beautiful selection of RH basses then leave quietly 2) there happen to be a few left handers but they're not worth the wood they've been made. There is the odd ocassion that you spot a top class LH bass but it's usually grossly overpriced. Still exciting times though.
Indeed. And very occasionally walk in,spy the solitary L/H bass hanging up covered in dust, say"you've had that a while, how much do you want for it?" and walk out with a bargain.

Selling my Selmer Zodiac 100w to get an HH VS Musician.I've never parted with a bass, though I was thinking about thinning out the collection,I've never really used the LH 1962 Burns Sonic or the Shergold, but after having read this thread I'm not so sure I should part with them..

Sterling has a smaller body than the Stingray,1" narrower and 1" shorter, the Stingray has 21 frets as opposed to the Sterlings 22,and the neck on the Sterling is 1/8" narrower at the nut.

Contact the buyer and ask if they want it autographed...

I play left handed, although I'm not actually left handed.I simply can't physically hold, let alone play a right handed instrument,no idea why.Not that this is relevant to the issue in question.
