1. Barefaced Super12. Best cab around hands down.
2. Some amps still pass a signal straight to the di in case of an amp failure. Although if the cone doesn't move I expect that its buggared.
3. that Amp sounds amazing!
4. If you don't have a PA supporting the bass then you have an issue, I've rarely been happy with onstage sound and volume. I primarily stand near the kit to help my groove and its loud as f***! I can usually hear everything fine and wonder why anyone else needs anything turning up in the monitors. As long as FOH sound is ok then onstage can be as poo as you like. I'd get out there and try and hear your band play as if you were an audience member. If you can hear yourself IN the mix out there I wouldn't worry. I always struggle to hear my cab on stage no matter what I do, where as in a rehearsal room or at home it feels bloody loud!. An excuse for in-ear monitoring?
5. Never really had a disastor with sharing my stuff. As you can see from the Bring me my instrument! Its not cheap gear. I always set it up for the user and remind them that as long as the blue light isn't flashing loads its ok, and that changing the knobs does nothing as its going straight to a desk. Or if we don't have a PA I set up the sound. Usually the other bassists are to nervous to touch it anyway. I'm surprised that 90% of gigging bassist do not understand basic amp controls. On the point of him breaking being a complete douche. He is liable due to him willingly taking responsibilty of the gear and due to his neglagence he broke it. Although did you not notice any nasty noises during him playing? Or it being way too loud? . I'm surprised the amp didn't cut out due to heat protection though, are sure this didn't happen?
6. Can you play bass too much? I think I do, I cant get enough. I love learning new things, and everytime I pick up my bass I feel amazing. Everytime. Sure, I've had off days, particulaly after recording sessions.Still I dont think I would have ever got to where I am with myself as a player and with my band. Some days when I wake up, I have to play the bass, usually because I didnt play the day before. Most weeks I play so much that I ruin the tips of my fingers.!!!! Bass is a big part of my life, and I honestly get upset a little if I cant play my bass through my rig. Most nights are spent playing through my headphones to tunes, and going over scales and just improvising to a drum track to help write new songs. God, I love bass. Merry Christmas aswell everyone!!!!.
7. For me there is no comparison. The midget is the loudest cab of its size. To save a few bob I doubt you'll need the tweeter version as its so small and it seems quite high even though its the same 4khz as the compact. I've used a midget on its own no PA mainy time with need for more.
8. I'm sure there is someone in notts with a wood and tronics that 5 string 33 inch scale. I forget his username though. Try the old bass bash thread?
9. fortunatly for me my working day finishes at 3:15pm and 99 times out a hundred gigs are late. however on the odd occassion that it's not local I can book the day off no problems as management are there to take over if needs be, which I would expect to be the same anywhere, thats what they are there for. I also get saturdays off. So I'm rather lucky I guess. As far as going forward I'd suggest speaking calmly about to whoever is in charge. Even on a saturday afternoon I cant see a music store getting that busy, not even busy enough to require 6 staff. The biggest local one to me has had 5 on during a Saturday dinner and there was me and one other person in the store. All I wanted was some strinsg..... I wouldnt give up your holidays as you are entitled to them for working whatever you work, and not being paid for them puts your manager or whoever does payroll in a difficult situation. You work instead of having holidays but the business is legally obliged to still pay these and you can always claim these back should you leave or something happanes that leaves a sour taste. Putting them out of pocket.
10. if you enjoyed what you were using id stick to that. Fender J's can be found quiet cheap on here. A good japanese one will set you up for life. Littlemark 2 and 3's can be found here very cheap aswell. As far as cabs go, if you want the most for less. Barefaced all the way, no compromise. I was the same as you long ago. I brought (brand new) a fender japanese Jaguar bass, and my first real setup was a orange OTB and bareaced compact. I know use actives and markbass.
11. well, its completly solid state, so for me it misses on the tube harmonics you get from a tube pre. however it wieghs something like 1.9kg, and coupled with a barefaced i could walk to rehearsal with guitar on my back and the cab in hand. I'm not a fan of useless knobs and this does have one(enhance), but everything you would need to change is on the front panel. If you are a fan of the tubey growl like you get from the svt or a orange terror bass, this alone isnt for you, but i coupled it with a tech21 character pedal to get that sort of sound. Because the inherent response is reasonably flat, the pedal's eq was more than enough to get that sort of sound. Anyway, the highlight is definatly the tiny size and wieght.
12. not being a troll either. Would like one of these to match with my ampeg cab. I brought my first one for £370 used, and it was an early american made one, with a rack case bag thing. They dont fair too well on the used market. I was going to offer my Eden WTX500 plus a bit of cash.
13. I wouldnt bother modding it, its sound would hardly change so youd end up wasting money and barely using it still. Sell it and go buy a decent amp. The sound of loud bass in your ears may inspire you to get into gigging.
14. They are pretty clear in sound, usually quite even across the frequency range. For me they do lack something. They are IMO overpriced. A barefaced Super15 will be louder lighter and clearer in the mids than whgatever 6x10 markbass have.
15. I've had a sMB-4A in a Ray and the 3 coil version in a sterling. I wouldn't bother with the ceramic version as its rather muddy, and lacks definition that the alnico version has. When I had the ray it did get a few comments on great sound even compared to a pre-EB ray at a bass bash. I'd stay away from ceramic stuff, as its a cheap magnet and to me you get a cheap sound.
16. http://www.youtube.c...bed/XqxixMlclzs Takeshi Ueda I would say is a lead bassist, but shares the lead role appropriatly with the guitarist. Lead bass to me isn't necerssarily niggling and solo'ing throuigh out, it having a more prominent bass sound as the focal point. Also the bassist isnt following what the guitarist is doing, like Primus, RATM and so many others.
17. I alkways think of thunderstruck when AC/DC gets mentioned. In all honestly pick sounds have always been sounds that are designed to sit back in the mix and do that low thumpy that majority of audience barely notice. If you want a great pick player and sound, Nate Mendal live is great but for the more showy player Takeshi Ueda of Mad Capsule Markets is good example, even more so if you like bass distortion.
18. Honestly all these comments while helpful the only one who can tell you for sure and honestly is Alex or one of his other wizards. Despite being busy he does answer all emails. Personally I love my compact, the last gig I did it provided the main bass sound for a small club with pa only adding that rumble factor. The thing on watts from my view is that the compact at least, needs a good 300watts at 8ohm, I've tried a few other heads (ampeg, eden) that have been quoted as having around 300watts and they've not had the juice to push it. Depth? A lot of people confuse 2x10 inability to voice the mid range correctly as depth so I think the striking clarity of the mids on any barrfaced cab is shocking, however I stand by having a gteat "flat" tone is easier to manage in loud situation and easily transfered to different genre's. 1 compact is loud. A compact and a midget will be very very very loud.
19. A ot of my original songs I learnt on bass I don't think ill ever forget. I don't think I've ever forgotten how to play something I've learned cuase every other week or so I try and play most of the songs I know or at least go back to ones I haven't played ina good while. I've forgotten a fair few guitar songs I learnt in the past but who cares about that noisy thing.
20. At my local rehearsal space they have a peavey mk2(or3) head and a peavey 8x10 and I was very surprised by the sound very pleasant and much more usable for me compared to what ampeg has to offer.
21. Shout out for Mr. Bungle and deep kick. Some personal favourites of mine are Papanegro and Maximum to the Hormone.I'd also take a look at Public Enemy.
22. Personaly, neither. Stingrays and sterlings hit the mark for me.
23. Seems simple but something many people over look is the gain on the amp. A "hot" pickup won't necersaryly go louder than a pickup with moderate ouput as you have to set most input gains to the clip limit. You may be after a more mid focused sound so before splashing the cash I would experiment more with all the controls you have. Also something solo'd will sound a lot different in a full band.
24. Money no question I would have another early 90's sterling setup the same with the same pickup. I've yet to find myself in a situation where I needed another bass at a gig.
25. I'm not to familar with the sansamp which I'm guessing is the bass driver. As far as I know presence knobs usually boost some high frequency but have a very small Q(bell shape) (I think) Personally you I wouldn't use the bass on full and presence on full (this is what's sucking the juice out of those high end notes,) Start with the presence on 0 and bass and treble on "flat" I,e 12 o'clock. Use the blend to put in mids as desired. If ypu still feel you need more bass turn down the treble. What sound are you after? Examples?
