Seems to me you like either a mid cut sound(some would say modern or "full") or a "feel" more less "hear" But cutting the kids to me mead you are losing out on a lot of what a good bass sound is about (IMO of course) grindy esque low mids, burpy higher mids. You lose so much definition when mid cutting, I can see why some people do it (inparticulary sound engineers, "multi-musicians" I jest of course ) however with the Barefaced cabs you lose quiet a bit of the magic of what these cabs can do. Especially the tweeted ones. The low, mids and highs keep up with each other practically to it's max output so bassists should use this to be heard! Not just felt! I dont want to get on at you because "Each to his own" and all that. But a solid "flat" sound is much better than low end mush. I'm not going to keep trying to lecture you as you know what you are doing.
I know what you are saying, but it just sounds better that way. Believe me, I only use EQ when necessary and sparingly (I am also a competent sound engineer). My intention was to run without the pre shape, but for some reason it does not work for me. It's a bit like the markbass vpf filter. It certainly was not a sharp treble sound though, but I can see how you might think it is. None of the knobs were moved more that to five to or five past, so it was nothing excessive, honest.
It just seems like a lot of work for not much gain..... If you like it by all means I won't stop you. No doubt it wasn't "sharp" as the compact isn't too capable of it. Personally I don't rate the ashdown line, and I've read of quiet a few people having to use the shape filter all the time. I can only imagine in my head it's a very wooly sound with not a lot of definition, and I stand by the point of not having this filter on as a similar if not the same sound can be managed with the standard EQ knobs. A lot of places I've been to insist on DI'ing straight from the bass,(I'm not fussed I like the sound of my basses but if I insist I will have te head DI'd) so no matter what you do on the head it won't make any difference out front. Obviously you know this though. I go about my sound a totally different way, as I just want to hear what the bass sounds like without the head or cab adding anything(or taking away) thats all ready there, and will use the bass to EQ to the room. I'd only mess with the amp EQ if I was going straight to desk and I was struggling to hear myself on stage. That can also be helped by moving around the stage (incase of null spots) and tilting the cab up with a roll of gafa. I'm in Notts so if I'm ever free or one of your gigs I'll pop along, I don't mean to seem condescending I just find it had to believe that the cab needs that much EQ (or more knob twiddling I should say, the louder it goes the less the small increments make any difference I find on some heads)
-
Why are you using the scoop, then boosting the mids anyway? this maybe one of your issues with the head and the cab. This shape is boosting the lows and highs and cutting the mids, too which you cut the lows and boost mids and highs. Then you further over EQ by boosting kids and lows on the bass. So after all that knob twisting you've probably ended up with a sharp treble boost. Not knowing what sound you are after it's difficult to say what you should be doing. Ive see. You say the bass can be lost a lot, and this sharp treble boost is probably down to the 4khz cut off on the Compact. Stop turning all the knobs!!! Just because you can doesn't mean you should, and the compact is one of those cabs that doesn't need all that mid cut then boost and more bass, last thing the cab needs is more bass! I can only advise on what I do, go into it flat, use the treble on the bass for more "cut", use the bass on the bass to lose boom if necerssary, and on a ray you don't need to mess with the mids as they are quiet prominent, you only have to use the mids if you feel are getting "lost" . Stay away from the shape button, it'll be killing the bass sound. If you are on a stage where te Rig is just for monitoring you need to focus on having good mids and low mids so you can hear yourself on stage, and try tilting it back. If you are still struggling email alex. At Barefaced

Lightweight or D class amp that sounds like a Valve amp
Prime_BASS replied to thebassman's topic in Amps and Cabs
+1 on te OTB. Consensus seems to be it's the best "all valve" a like than most in it's price range. The RH450 is also good but it's an amp you hbe to try out and compare with others to see if it's right for you. LittlemarkRocker I like, from Mark bass, although some say it's a little bit to hissy gain, not te full wool type people usually want. genz streamliner is supposedly good but not heard it myself. Also the Genz Benz shuttle is capable of tube overdrive but some would say it's difficult to work with, the gain stage is confusing and the EQ is a little limiting. Another popular choice is getting something like the LittleMark 2/3 then using a sansamp pedal for the tube like OD. You shouldn't have to change bass or cab to get what you are after. Although if you the opportunity to try stiff that's out there do it, also think about returns policy as something that's ace in store may not be for you in a real world situation(at gigs) -
A lot of EQ sections "flat" isn't optimally flat. To get optimum flat response from the OTB you hav to cut the treble and bass to off and mids all the way on. Any who. The BSP is by far one of the best all rounded dedicated pre-amp IMO Majority of the pedal "pre-amps" that say "can even be used as pre-amp to plug into a power amp" I find are lacking in the output, and find it hard or can't really match the same output by using a standard amp heads input through the onboard pre-amp. I may have been doing something wrong. You need to fid what you need from your rig and then find something that meets those requirements the best. In regards to cabbage. I had the compact a while ago and I changed to the midget because (at the time) I didn't need something that loud and I wanted the extra top end. I haven't tried a range that best does the clear and transparent aspect. I wouldn't worry about getting the sound right with the cab as you'll get out whatever goes in, so it's down to the sound you want/like from a bass, and then the head (or preamp/poweramps) ability to be as loud and as clear as possible. Again you should decide what you need most from a cab and then find what suits you best. If you ever want to come and try the S12T and F1 you are more than welcome.

I would organise but I don't know the first thing about it haha. I guess first thing would be to gauge how many would like to/are interested in going.

Anyone play a guitar amp and a bass amp at the same time?
Prime_BASS replied to cocco's topic in Amps and Cabs
I`ve seen people do this when they`ve wanted to have gain/overdrive on their sound. I can see the thought process, keep the clean thump on the bass amp, chuck in the ovedrive on the guitar amp. You probably wouldn`t need such a big guitar amp to add in some nice dirt to your sound this way - and probably not that much more costly than a decent Bass OD pedal.
Just depends if lugging around a whole separate rig for a specific sound is worth it to the user. I know I cancer a fairly good distortion from my guitar stack, but for me I have to be carrying the least amount of gear so it's amp go for. At one point I was running a Orange HTC120 and 2 orange 4x12s. It was great for what I wanted, but not the ideal "bass" sound, using one and having it slightly clean never had the low end response for a full sound. -
Will it be used for gigs? If so how big? Pubs, clubs, stadiums? Does it need to be gigging level loud for these gigs? If you are gigging with it, are you getting PA support? I would say that without this knowledge you should look at things like EA micro Iamp and the wizzy10 or the genz Benz shuttle 3/6 plus one of the respective cabs. They are both solid bits of kit that are suitable for home practice or low level band rehearsals. If used for gigs they can be sent straight the desk aswell. Trouble is they don't come up used very often.

Anyone play a guitar amp and a bass amp at the same time?
Prime_BASS replied to cocco's topic in Amps and Cabs
I have done in my room for a mess about. Honestly can't see the point unless you are after a good sound and typically crap and frequency deficient sound. At gigging levels a similar sized guitar amp would not be able to keep up with the bass amp. I guess it would only be of use if the guitar cab was large and used purely for distortion, and the bass amp for a clean low end sound to make ip for signal lose of the guitar amp. -
Cheap bass, cheap camera, bunch of 12-year-olds

What's wrong? He doesn't slap it, obviously. He has friends, we all know bassists are a lonely race. -
DR Strings - Problems and no response from them in over 2 months.
Prime_BASS replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Great to see you on the forum... Maybe you could respond to a few of the quality control issues mentioned in this thread. Also, is there a supply issue at the mo. I have been waiting for a set of Black Beauties (6 string set) from Bass Direct for about a month. Each week Mark apologises for the delays and says he is told they will be delivered this week. I was there 2 weeks ago and he made a call to you (??)/the supplier whilst I was there and heard him told that they were sorry about the delay again, but demand has been huge and they'd be with him that week. 2 weeks have passed and he still hasn't received the delivery. I spoke with Mark again at the weekend and he told me that he had arranged for the set to be sent to me direct this week as he was away from Tuesday and had been 'promised' (again) that they would be going out this week. It's now the end of the week and needless to say, nothing has arrived. Is there a supply issue? If so, in the interest of customer service, I think being honest to the shops stocking the product is a good start. I know things get delayed, but to say 'this week' and still be saying 'this week' into the 5th week later says somethings gone wrong or someone's just fobbing the stockist off... I REALLY want to keep using the strings, but I'm not prepared to wait 'another' week. Hopefully there's some news on supply? Thanks! Shep
I've been waiting about 4 weeks for 2 packs of 45-100 hi beams... Same as you Mark can only apologise and say what he has web told which is this week or next week blah blah. I had to email firstline as I had a duff E in a 40-100 set I had to buy(I was desperate and couldn't get my usual sets due to supply issue). The reply apologised and asked for my address and my replacement would be out this week.... That was a good 2 weeks ago. I also asked him about my order, and I got the same "this week" crap. Really frustrated now, how can the distribution not know whn they are getting stock? -
The bands first ever song: I wrote a nice root and octave line with measures ending with a scale run backwards. It was ace, it was my thing for that song and was a nice subtle transition between different parts of the song. Then the guitarist thought it'd be great to "harmonise" with me..,.. He has his god damn solo god dammit !!! Now I hate playing the song as it sound terrible and messy, since he can't ever remember when the run comes in and plays it wrong.
I figure if I want a 2x10, I can just use the TC RS210, which is actually a really nice cabinet, hence why Im keeping two and selling the RS212. I stupidly thought Id use all three TC cabs together. Never happened. Sod it, NY122 it is. In the long run its cheaper as I dont have to add another cabinet.
I have no doubt that the NY122 is a stronger cab (in sound) than the combination of club cabs, because it's made fairly better, i.e proper bracing ad better drivers. The markbass range is rather strange to me. Personally I think they need a cut down as they make "lightweight" stuff but there are 3 different versions of 2x10 all different weights..... My favourite cab of theirs is the 604, but I wouldn't want to use jut one. Also the S12T is a much better cab overall, and matches well with 9 out of 10 of these high powered lightweight heads. You get out what ever you put in, and I can't praise Alex or his wizard team enough.

Clover bass guitars - Quality?
Prime_BASS replied to Herbie The Rad Dorklift's topic in Bass Guitars
You are more Likly to get a good on than you would with fender. But if your dream bass is the SR5, save the extra pennies and make a custom otlrder with Darren at Bass Merchant. You can choose anything from the current options, also if it does come and it's duff they'll take it back and start from scratch. It's a long wait but it's worth it. I waited 3 months for my big al. -
I'm only going to repeat what's been said before. Use 2, one the usual and another for the lowest tuning and use that for anything other than standard or whatever majority of the songs you are playing are in. Transpose the rest using the lowest tuned bass. It shouldn't sound too odd. I remember my band trying to cover SOAD chop suey, I think the tuning is in C, we did it in standard and just played it as low as possible. Then again we weren't trying to do it exactly the same, as some parts I went a whole octave up to be in pitch with the guitar.
Yeah, it's marmite with these. Again, I think their latest line is much stronger, I did try the NY122 a fee times and for the size/weight, it was damn right impressive. I don't really want to get two 2x10s as the RS cabs cover that and they do it very well, but a slim 4 ohm powerful 2x12 with a fairly light weight is a good option.
Barefaced S12T? The sound is glorious with class A/B amps, especially the littlemark range.
-
Personally the 2x12 is better option. Not the lightest I've ever picked up but the sound it makes is one of the better ones from the MB cab range. I don't know why but I don't rate markbass cabs as much as the heads.
The times i had to turn right up were with smaller cabs like my MB 151P. I never go near halfway with my 1212L
You should get a S12T! I'm finding 9 o'clock to be enough with the f1. The preamp is clipping a lot later on the gain stage than with RH. However like all heads, it does run out of juice at around 1-2 o'clock on the master.
