Since I started playing bass I seem to have accumulated a load of crap I dont need! prices are collected, but I will post for the actual cost of shipping insured/signed for and ill be usuing parcel monkey for this. I have: 1 SKB 'freedom' hardcase. Came with my stingray from the states, hold that well and it should hold a variety of other 4-string basses aswell, fender P/J as long as its that sort of shape, small space for strap and other things, no keys but it takes the generic key that usually comes with all hardcases and toy safes... small crack on the top side. £20 I'm looking at buying a decent laptop with atleast windows 7 on and a disc drive recorder purely for home recording, also avid USB interface and protools. Also would like a SM57 with a clip and lead!!! Cash on collection or if you want it posting ill get a quote and itll have to be done by a bank transfer as Paypal has blocked my bank account. Check my feedback aswell. thanks for looking and I'll answer any questions. At last after a few weeks searching I finally found an Early sterling, maple board with birdseye and the bigger bridge. Found it on Ebay, so I bid and won it last weekend. The ad said it used to be owened by Andy Hawkins of Midget in the mid/late 90's. checked out some pics on their site and there are a few shots of it, or a very similar bass. Then I checked out some tunes on itunes and can swear blind its a sterling, and it could be the one I have or the only other one Ive seen him pictured with. What I want to do now is get some string mutes for it and try and confirm the Midget story. Ive got on with it extremely well. the neck is pretty thin which easyier on my finger, but the depth is thicker than on the big al which isnt causing cramp in my hand. The big selling point was the birdseye maple neck and fingerboard, it's not in bucket loads or in depth, but enough to satisfy a mild wood afficiondo. Id never buy a standard maple neck and maple fingerboard, the anemic look is really off putting but the orangey look of these older neck tickles me just right. the edges are nice and worn in which is really pleasant on the fingers. The finish is in a pretty decent condition and the colour is very deep. I had to swap the screws as they were rusted to buggery. Now on the sound. Im a Ray man through and through and I didnt expect much from a sterling, but I have to say that I'm sold. The overall sound when flat in the back position is very ray like, although even in my bands mix I notice the slight lack of depth in the lows and the not so brittle highs which I can only put down to the ceramic pickup. the mids and low mids are little more pronounced and the low mids are effected a lot more by the bass knob than on my stingray, so I use it flat with treble boosted to get some more high end on the higher strings. Im in two minds weather to swap it for the equivalant pickup by SD, as I have the 2 coil version in my Ray, but if it ends up sounding the same then what point is there in having another bass?
Me like high tension!!!! G.
They arnt that high tension anyway, although it's the only set of flats ive tried. If you get the pressure right on the pads, little mid boost and bassboost, sounds sweet!

Try them on that Ray.!
I just used my RS210 with the Genz STL900 and a new aux cable I just had delivered. I cant believe how good music sounds through this setup. Lovely fat.crisp, bass, but the rest of the music is well balanced. The RS210 cab continues to impress me.
The Barefaced range are all good for massive expensive stereos, as long as the amp is nice and clear.
If you are using public transport for practices, just DI when you get there. I'd not ever want to schlep a cab on public transport.
Contemplated that but the last time I did this, as the amp I was using was pants, it didn't go down well. Also I'd rather be in control of my whole sound in one unit, something I can't quite let go of. The midget was a breeze getting on off buses.
Sure there was a tweeter option on the Compact.
So did I, I got confused between the compact and the bigone. Unless Alex is hiding something. Something to do with inconsistent polar response, which I do t get as a lot of this physics stuff is way over my head still.
-
Well ideally Id chose the compact again. As wieght and size wise it's a but more manageable on the frequent 40 minute I'm now doing to practices, and if using public transport the size is to over-bearing. While the S12T is massive by any means the size and wieght can be cumbersome when you are carrying a bag for an amp and another for the guitar and what ever other gubbins, which is probably how the feet got ripped off However as you don't install tweeters in the compact the 4khz top end isn't enough and makes a huge difference.
i imagine it'll be like the trace elliot bright box. basically uses a hpf so it can be used in parallel with any cabs as the overall resistance is negligible.
Ah, I did find some more info but you put it a more erm, understandle format. However the one I saw pictures of was being used purely with a sub. I'd be I treated in using as a standalone tweeter/mid range box, with a certain compact cab........

After doing my best with calculations using some web calculators, it seems the driver will work better with a vented box. Regarding the RS cabs. I'm looking for a middle ground between what the midget is and what Super12T is. The closest thing I've seen are usually 2x10 boxes, and the only one Ive seen with a decent wieght is the purple-chili cabs. However I emailed them about more detailed specs and no reply..... I can cope with the super12T fine but I'd like something smaller that doesn't have as much wieght so I can go further distances with it(I have no car) The midget was amazing to have around very loud and punchy but as the lead guitard upgraded his gear and learned how to make it louder, the midget stopped being an option unless I was using purly as a monitor. Plus out doors gigs with no PA needed something bigger. I'm only looking for a midget now for recording and acoustic gigs my bandmates want to start doing. Anyway im slowly getting the picture that a loud 2x10 that's small and light doesn't exist, due to those T/S law things or whatever.
The Ampeg driver has 4.7mm xmax, the 2510 4.2mm. That gives them virtually identical output capability.
Definatly food for thought.
If I'm picturing the right cab, is it sealed? Means the driver probably isn't suitable. The Midget uses a Kappalite driver.
Indeed, however this 10" driver on the eminence site says it should work well with either sealed or vented cabs. Is this a pointless endeavour?

Just wanted get some advice from those far more in the know than me. Just wondering if there would be much increase in overall performance if I was to upgrade the drivers to say the deltalite 2510. At a guess it's the same sort of driver Alex uses in the midget. I'd also be after increasing the power rating and output with out increasing the cabs overall wieght beyond 15kgs. Ideally something like 500w at 8ohm? I'm very dumb on technicalities.

I'm pretty interested in how the head case works.

Try flats, I find d'ardio chromes the best. Also the knobs go down as well as up, try cutting back on the treble with flats and boost the mods and lows a little and it gives a pretty warm and mellow tone.
-
You should try and get a used HH or HS EBMM sterling. Usually light, mine is 9lbs but I've heard of some being 8.8lbs. Also the neck is pretty thin but not like a jazz neck.
In my mind: MIM = Made by Mexicans in Mexico. MIA = Made by Mexicans in USA. The US models are noticeably better (better cuts of wood, feel a bit more solid etc) but the price difference for me is unjustified.
Damn, beat me to it. I will agree on sometimes the US versions being noticeably better, however the mexicans can have moments. And the Americans can have their F*ck it, it's Friday days aswell.

I anchor the thumb on the pickup, and move it up to the lower strings when playing on the higher ones. I believe this to be the best way (for me atleast) as it stops the low notes and open strings from sustaining to long and over bearing the higher notes.

Just some question and advice needed really from those more in the know than me. I was just wondering what the wattage rating is for when it's outputting into a single 8ohm cab? I can take a guess at between 450-500watt, or is that a little optimistic? Also not being inclined to the power full EQ and tubetone I was just wondering if someone could give some hints and tips for Overdrive sounds. In particularly Mad Capsule Market's Takeshi Ueda's sound from the 4 plugs and digidogheadlock albums. Cheers! Btw I largly use the stingray and sterling with treble boost and lows boosted depending on the room.

Anyone in NOTTs with a Compact I can try out?
Prime_BASS replied to Prime_BASS's topic in Amps and Cabs
Cool cool. If all goes south with the band situation then I'll definatly try and get down. -
No doubt my band will be put under something I hate. Pop-punk no doubt. I hope my self would be classed between funk and punk.
-
I firmly believe there is something different in the 90's EBMM stingray and sterlings. A combination of the best features they've ever done/do as standard, and if you have one in a really used(rolled edge on fingerboard etc) then you have a great instrument that will could never be produced again.

Now I work more sociable hours, I can't wait to gig more often

First time I've heard a complaint for a quiet fan. I remember never really noticing the fan on my old 3-pro until it had been used for abOut 20 minutes in high volumes.

As the title says.! I'm looking at something in-between the supertwelveT that I have and the midget I had. Not that the S12T doesn't do what I need it to do, but I need something between the two for transport reasons and back health reasons. Now when I had the compact I didn't have either of my lovely MM basses I didn't know how to play how I do now and I didn't have the fabulous amp I do now, so I'd like to try one out to see if the sound is what I'm after. I fear not having a tweeter as I really notice a significant difference on stage and in rehearsals when I have the S12T's tweeter off. Thanks for any help.
