1. Fender MIJ Jaguar Bass! Olympic White, with a black and tortoise shell pickguard, fender custom shop 60s JB pickups (alnico) dimarzio red clip lock strap, free set if schaller 1/2 enclosed tuning machines+string tree post. History: I brought this brand new a little less than a year ago, I've lived it since but as I've grown as a player my tastes and playing style has changed drastically, I went from using a pick hanging low to on my chest finger style. Not that this bass can't be played anyway you want but the sound and the thin neck is not for me anymore. After a while I brought a black pickguard from the US for £20 which makes it look rather different and IMO a bit more classic/simple, I've still got the OG tortoise one which will come with. I also installed a dimarzio red 2" clip lock strap but I still have the OG strap buttons. I also upgraded the pickups to the ones stated above, the cheap Japanese ones were a stronger out put but gave a poor sound, the alnicos are a lot more clearer across the range and help the preamp sound better aswell. Somewhere along the way it got dented on the front just by the front contour, it's small but does hit the wood slightly, there is also some grazing on the bottom but not massively visible even when up close. Sound: at the end of the day it's got the stereotypical jazz bass sound with a few extra offerings, in series it's very deep with boosted low mids and cut highs, but turning the preamp on and adding some treble rounds the sound off, the 60s CS pickups give it a slightly sweeter tone than something growling or burping. Price: £550 considering it's condition and extras, £100 pickups, £20 extra guard and amazing tuners, in a slightly ripped fender gig bag, I think it's a great price overall. Obviously I'll take offers, and if you want it delivered I'd expect a bank transfer with an extra £15 to cover postage. Musicman SUB: As I've brought the "real" thing I don't need this anymore. Im not gonna bore you guys, you should know what these are. Comparing it to a standard MM stingray 4H 2EQ IMO there is not anything between them other than the finish. The neck is the most different, it still feels like a stingray but the painted finish makes it slightly slower for those who sweat buckets through their hands (like me) I don't what else can be said. It's been used quiet a bit and there is the odd dint and chip off the finish but nothing drastic, and obviously it doesn't effect the great tone. Comes with a White pearliod pickguard which transform the look. Price is £350 collected, posted is an extra £15 and by bank transfer preferably. Both basses are set up by me, I'm no pro but they do the job well enough for me to enjoy playing on them, they've both got freshly boiled EB super slinky strings on. Trades, I would trade both of them for a White sandberg JM4 or PM4, not fussed on neck, as long as it's White of somekind. That's it really but worst I can say is No. I'll get pictures up over the weekend! Thanks Stephen
2. What kind of price for the head?
3. I think I've decided to put this up for swapsies. It's just not working, the sound is perfect for a 3 piece jazz band, and the preamp gives you an extra aggressive edge Although the neck is great, when stood up it sits to far away from me, and in any position I have other that sat down with on my thigh is uncomfortable, for my hand for my arm for my back. So it's not doing me any favours. Also I could do a tone of upgrades and I have a spare load of chrome and scratchplate to use if I needed extra switches, but in reality, it's not gonna change the sound or the way it plays, is it?
4. Fancy trading the r500 for an OTB in as new condition, gigbag+box, I can put monies in too? Thanks Stephen
5. I understand what you are saying, but the opposite in term of the Jag, don't get me wrong it's an amazing bass. But my body and mind are rejecting it, with some kind of snobbery, I hate te fact that I don't like to play a little bit more every day. However back on topic; I do hope you keep as bongos are nice basses (not for me, looks wise, and the tone is a little sterile for my tastes) but I guess thats why the big al appeals to me.
6. I already sense you are going to change. Sorry I just think you will. You may find that you are more suited to an active P bass sound with the way you are EQing the bongo.
7. I understand what you mean if there was no negatives I'd be trawling the scene with a bloody great Goliath of a rig. The sound I roughly go for is the sound tim commerford has on bullet in the head. Or as flat as possible. Get the genz it's got a good clean tone, and will be as loud as hell, and it should sound great with your Barefaced cabs, it's a very articulate head.
8. The 500 is also double the weight of the OTB.
9. Currently have a Orange Bass Terror and it's amazing for what it is, but you guys know the story. Im looking for something smaller, more powerful and more features. I guess I'm mainly after clip lights and input lights. Only other requirements are that it must do at least 300w 4ohm, to be able to drive a single midget, at least 1 tube in the preamp. Tone wise, as long as it's clean is cool. One thing I had in mind is a SVT7-pro: I know it's heavier than the OTB but it's power ratings are perfect for either a single midget or 2 (which I'll be getting) I had a SVT3 for some time and loved the tone but was underpowered for my compact that I had at the time. And the 7s tone is pretty close. Features wise it's got a lot aswell. Another one I've looked at is the Genz-Benz shuttle 9.0, it's got a great amount of wattage, and it's clean tone is nice and even. Another option for lightness is the SWR HeadLite but to get enough power I'd need the amplite aswell, which is another 400+ on the price, so I think that is kinda out. That's all im really clues up on. I'd most probably be buying used aswell, and I haven't seen any used prices for those above. Thanks for any input.
10. The sterlings neck is slim like jazz neck, and I think for the style of music that this bass would be perfect. It's supposedly aggressive, and in the mix I'm think of it'll cut through and hold down a lot of low end, may e you should try this bass in the sound setting you are wanting to play, I doubt very much changing to something like sadowsky JM or any other jazz bass will be much better than a sterling for the sound I think you are after.
11. White spirit should work, it's the methanol in it that takes the crap off I think. Boiling it might work, but some rust may still be stuck to It.
12. Our drummer is th typical "look at meat the back!" then does a loud and long drum roll. If he gets annoying I ask him to play quietly, his response is usually "it sounds crap quiet", and I say that if he is so good he can make it sound good quiet then he does it.
13. The 6s response only goes to 45hz which isn't low enough, since some active basses low eq is set at 40!! The 6 and 3 are designed to go with the respective cabinets by GB. The 9 extra power warrants a lower low end I can only guess it's close 30hz which gives you the sub-bass IMO. I'd never buy an amp that didn't comfortably go to around 30hz, especially with the Barefaced cabs as they can voice down to 33hz IIRC. I tend to keep my amp flat with mine as the compact I had and the midget I know have have a pretty flat response once the speaker has broken in.
14.
Goes to show that it does all come down to the 'tone' you want. I agree, test them all out. I barely use mine due to it's sheer immense overkill power for some gigs. I love it, and I won't sell it, but it really has got some ummph behind it. One great thing is the popularity, even outside of the bass world, means if I do sell I won't lose that much. Not that I'm selling!!
+1 I had the guitar version (ad140htc) and I got more than I paid for it once it eventually sold. But on topic- I'm always going for a warm clean tube sound. I've got the Orange terror bass, and it does the job amazingling well for the price, still I may shift it to get something smaller and more powerful. The AD200 will go pretty loud with some great headroom but you'd need some speakerage to go with it, I prefer it's clean tone to the dirt anyway.
15. I'm not sure about yeah but until recently the stingray used ceramic pups like on a sterling 4, and the preamp I think was the same. So in essence, the early SR5s compared to Sterling 5s are roughly the same sound wise I guess, expect the sterling5 to have a smaller body and a thinner neck. The body is a given but the neck size I'm not positive about.
16. I could do change the preamp to something more high quality and do the usual CTS pots + orange drop, and see about adding a stacked vol/vol knob but it's a big job due to the jags over-complicated wiring, and I'm pretty positive it would just be more of the same results sound wise. And at the end of the day it still won't be as comfortable/enjoyable/easy as what my SUB is, which in essence is a large part of this small quest. I'm also fighting gas over a stingray a friend has found over in the states, same sorta period as the one I have ordered, except te neck has some amazing figuring.
17. I know what your saying about versatile EQ options! But that inability to select output volume of each pickup is it's only down fall. Having had it nearly a year I've exhausted all it's options. An the pre-amp (on mine) isn't so fab, the bass side for example where it feels like it goes from -0db to +10db with no in between, the treble is the same, and it would be possible go upgrade it, but you'd have to mod the preamp to get it to fit and go in the jag with out kidding te jag. I could probably install a stacked volume knob where the master volume one sits, but the way they are wired they go to the on off board first and the master volume last (after the preamp) so it would be a big job for myself go take on without a decent schematic to work from. The only other way is pickup height which I have been doing, but lowering the neck pickup gives a lot more low mids and this bass isn't lacking in that, and doesn't need more. However a lot of it is down to playability and it's basic tone mixing in with my band, im pretty positive it would be fine in a 3 man setup that played a lot quieter stuff than what our originals are.
18.
Where do they attach the extra string and with the poles missing on the pup it would start even more debate than the already sore point of a weak G? Who told you that anyway give a poke in the eye from me! I cant think of one bit that could come off an SR4 to be used on an SUB 5?
My bad I meant electronics wise. I'm not sure where the PUP is alnico or not either. In a way it's what the classic stingray 5H is.
19. I'd only sell it if I could get a good price. I took it to a friendsgig and insisted he used it, so I could more or less get an idea of sound with out me playing it. I still feel it's got a lot less definition of notes, the upgraded pups but IMO it's only a good sound when played with a pick, and that's just not how I role these days, and if I do start using a pick the stingray tone I have is a great pick tone. If I was to sell this I'd need it replacing, unless I keepthe sub. If the SUB is a keeper, I'd mod it with a few pits khans and a status neck, but if not irony really want To end up with 2 stingrays. GAS stinks...
20.
Niiice. I've heard that the SUB 5 is more like a ray 5 than a ray 5 which is more like a Sterling 5. If that makes sense?
That's right, the SUB 5 ray is made using the same components as a standard stingray 4, thus it generates a stingray sound. Also looks like a stingray and not a silhouette bass. Where as the stingray 5s of the same time where made using the sterlings components. Which is considered by most more modern and IME slightly thin.
21. I know what your saying, I used to gig with this bass. That was before I started playing with me fingers, and began starting to enjoy the stingray sound.
22. Soon I would have had my jaguar bass a year, and I'm in 2 minds weather inshould get rid or stick with it. Recently I've had trouble going from the playability and sound of my SUB to the jag, and a recent band practice with my current setup at a reasonable volume didn't go so well. The sound just musher in the background unless I got aggressive at the bridge, then the highs just sounded thin, and was uncomfortable to play. I'm also struggling to find a nice sounding and comfortable position to play it finger style. It's just not working for me at all. The goods are that I do enjoy playing it noodling at home, and it's got some sentimental value, it's been the bass that has helped me go from bad to sort of ok, with a passable slap technic. I enjoy the stingray tone a lot more, and it sounds better with my band aswell. Like a lot of people say there is nothing that does it like a Ray. So what shall I do? Keep it or chuck it?
23.
But is it cheap? (OP) How many times have we been here?,For a little extra cash you can get a "real one" secondhand.I never understood why people got them new as £799 or whatever they were was already near the s/h EBMM prices at the time and now both have dropped the EBMM is a steal with room to appreciate where the SUB I feel will just stay the same or drop even further.
OP stated he only has £200, and wants to buy brand new. In reality the only semi-decent bass for the money is the Epi thunderbird however, the finish falls off, the bridge is naff, the pickups are weak and the electronics are shabby; and after all that it's not got the MM sound the guy wants. A lot of say buy used SUB (not off eBay due to inflation maybe from here) as they sell for not a few ton more than 200, I paid £375 for mine, I brought it for the sound not the looks, it's the best stingray sound on the cheap. No OLP I've heard that even came close (with mods) to the Ray sound was cheaper than what Subs have gone for. I see your point about just saving, but everyone is impatient, and saving up to 6-700 may take a while, where as the up to 400 Mark for used SUBs will take less than half as long. So my vote goes to SUBs for less than half price authentic stingray tone. Then again it didn't stop my gas and I've still brought the real deal. But it didn't cost as much as it should.
24.
He he I was looking for example pics and found this. :brow: Don't worry, I wouldn't.
Do it!
25. That tail piece is extravagant.
