1.
I feel I've exhausted the whole OLP thing to the point where it looks like I have a bone to pick (which I haven't) over on mcnash's thread but for me OLP is distinctly vanilla. If you want to even come close to a 'ray tone you need either a SUB or a Sterling Ray 34 - although I have no personal experience with the later.
I'm selling my SUB for £350 collected which is for as cheap as it gets. Once you get past the finish, it's the same thing. I've still gone and brought my dream stingray though.
2. Yeah it cleans up, with quite a but of headroom too. I have my gain on about 3 or just above depending on bass, higher output basses will be harder to get a clean tone out of as the gain will be so low as to lower the volume considerably.
3. Highway one? Any bass with the 60s positioning will sound 60s esque IMO. I had on a parts-a-jazz those fender custom shop 60s pickups, not much in the way of trebly burp or bite which is the 60's tone IMO.
4. Buy another 4ohm cab.
5. I may get a big al but unless there is a sudden abundance of used ones somewhere, it won't happen. I can see the appeal of the bongo when I listen and close my eyes, but the looks just arnt for me.
6. I'm available for new bands, established bands, originals, or a bit if both. Not fussy on style as long as I'm free to do what I can do. Great gear, great attitude, punctual, talented. PM me here or email me at [email protected]
7. I want a big al
8.
I have a Sabre with a fretless stingray neck on. I picked it up on here a couple of months ago for a first go at fretless and i am a convert, it is a great bass, anyhow the necks are def interchangeable cos i have tried the fretted maple neck from my Ray on it and it works!! (Less bolt holes though). I plan to upgrade it to a Status fretless neck at some point so i may have one available. Does anyone have any idea what a Stingray fretless neck is worth? + Is adding a Status neck to an (Already nowhere near 100% original) Sabre going to devalue it much? Cheers TK
Well if you sell the fretless ray necktie say £200, and then sell the sabre with status neck you could get a nice price, but people are rather keen on having it all original, so it would be a case of waiting for the right buyer or separating it up and then selling the parts.
9.
youtube is a wonderful thing hahahaha. Just seen a a review by Ed Friedland - The Bass Whisperer. He put the big al through its paces. lovely bass and very versatile too.
I can't watch that review because I get massive GAS. I think G is right about how it's voiced. It still has 'that' massive musicman sound, but it's still very different from what EBMM also produce.
10. What makes them cost so much.?
11. In the real world where number and facts actually make a difference, you would be so much better off with either a Barefaced midget or a Barefaced compact, both are extremely loud, and that's an understatement. I would save up the extra £150 or so to get one of those. I know it sounds like hype but in honesty compared to everything else I've tried at high volume it's the loudest lightest smallest best sounding cab ever, and I mean literally, not literally as in figuratively; I mean literally literally. Im truely blown away everytime I use my midget and having a compact I had to actually down size!!!! With the right powered and and eq a midget can be all you need, I may need another if my guitarists ever decde to start using 100w stacks.
12. Having witnessed the vintages's little brother (compact) and owned one of those ad200 and an ad series guitar stack this rig must be a beast, even separate those are deals. Sorry I'm not buying, free bump +
13. Orange terror bass..... Always, especially for a precision.
14. You've got to go try them both mate, or make sure you can return it if you dint like it. In reality, you may not use either control on either amp. But then again I wouldn't buy a Markbass amp for a vintage tone.... A better bet is the Orange Terror Bass: it's got 2 valves in the pre-amp 500 watts at either 4ohm or 8ohm, and it can do warm clean vintage tone or gritty tube drive, the only down side is the drive is a little cold and bass heavy, but I have mine set clean as a whistle always. It's also cheaper. Around £400 used but hard to come buy. I know alex recommends those amps, but at the same time is it theright sound for you? Another option is the SWR amplite, it's got 1 tube pre-amp is lighter than anything, and I think it does 400 at 4ohms If I had to choose though, it'd be the littlemark tube.
15. Just paid for it. 7-11 days I just have to wait now, can't wait.
16. I'm sure you would get the same result when you compare a CVP squier with a US deluxe precision.
17.
because its not a standard RAY.
But you wanted a rickenbacker? Does the missus know you have this? Or she not noticed because the case takes up less space than the old stingray did? The 2 bongos I've actually used sounded like rays but like starlings are slightly more hi-fi than old school, and still have that mid range punch, I guess the single would make some kind of difference but I'm rAther skeptical, you may have been better off with a big al SSS?
18.
well brother if your in the neighbourhood i will have the kettle on
I nearly brought a bongo from the states, but then I looked at it... I don't understand your reasoning behind buying a bongo after you decided you didn't like a standard RAY.
19. Thanks for the info, I did a bit of looking and I think I'll stick with the para-driver. I always forget how much more use I get with it when spanking the gaytar, it's defiantly more usual than when I use it with bass. I agree that sadowsky isn't tone altering, which is good, but the tech21 sound is fun to play around with and if I ever need it I've got a great grind pedal. Thanks for waiting patiently.
20.
Oh yeah *slaps head* hmm, teal's probably my least favourite of the colours they come in, but might still be interested...
It's pretty nice with the White pearliod guard on it. It'll definatley be in the for sale section once my stingray arrives.
21.
I've had to strip down to one through money and space necessities - ended up keeping my Bass Collection SB401 as it was my first 'proper' bass, I can get pretty much any sound I'm likely to need out of it, it's very forgiving feel-wise and I'd get nowhere near what it's worth secondhand. If I start gigging again I'll probably treat myself to a MM SUB though, purely because the look of the BC doesn't suit the more rock/blues stuff I tend to do with bands.
I'll be selling mine soon £375? I only need 2 basses, my jaguar and a musicman, got one coming soon, so the SUB will have to go.
22. Is the humbucker closer to the bridge than on the stingray?
23. Do not use the bass terror in 8ohm mode with either cab. You will most likely damage them. 500w into 250w doesn't fit so well. Running it in 4ohm mode into a 8ohm cab will decrease power to around 300+ which is a much safer option.
24. Not bass related but I've had a punch in the face in return for my phone and mp3 player. Oh wait.
25. Neck pickup solo'd Playing closer to the neck Adding a pre-amp Wiring it in series will all add a bit of boom. Marketing says that series switching makes jazz pups sound like P pups. Not in my experience, but you get 6db extra output less highs and more lows and low mids.
