Stand by for action! We are about to launch Stingray!
Prime_BASS replied to Prime_BASS's topic in Bass Guitars
Another one who has moved from the SUB-sidance! Great looking necks around that time.Somewhere on here is thread suggesting that era of Stingray will be next in line after the pre EB's for the prices to go up in comparison to the newer ones like my 2002.Along with early Leo era G&L's.
Don't get me wrong I love the SUB to pieces, it's like when I had a Gibson melody maker, it was only £375 new but you could feel it was crafted in the US and for £375 it was better than almost anything I could of ha at the time. Like with the SUB, the only thing I don't like is the finish, but at the same time it gives it it's character, it's like the grungy younger brother to a refined gentleman. I'm sure that's you predicting that? I do see where you are coming from though as I've seen slot of mid 90s rays with the mute paded bridge. The neck is wonderful though, I can't wait. Im expecting it in around 2 weeks! -
So who talks to you when you get off stage?
Just lately, other musos and bass players. My basses aren't that usual and some say nice things about my sound, which I appreciate. I mean, I think I know when I have a good sound but its is nice that some musos acknowledge it
Its nice whenyou know you didn't do so hot aswell. -

Once my band has finished playing I just get bassist asking about my lines and gear. No girls, the room is full of old men. The music scene I love it..... -
I hope some of you got that stingray link. I've been shopping around the used Market for weeks for a reasonably cheap and great looking Stingray. I've had a SUB but it's not the same (well it is it's just the finish and the snobbery of a stingray) Anyway; the story was over here you are either lucky to get a good one for little money, or you buy a new one. I did the usual eBay searches until I realised my phones eBay search didn't turn up all the basses that were listed. I found one in america. It's White with black pickguard, my favourite colours, 3 eq and has the string mute bridge, so I can guess it's around the mid 90s. It comes with the hard shall case. The big sell for me was the neck, the best neck I've seen on a bass is on my jag (some light quilted flame) but this ray is Birdseyed all over it. It's almost a shame it's got a rosewood board. Its got a few dinks which can explain the nice price I paid for it. Even after it gets here and after postage, Import and handly charges it should work out to hopefully £100 cheaper than used price over here. I can't wait. I just have to sell my SUB now and my spare Delano pup. So ; 3EQ White/black Rosewood on birdseye maple neck Spare SD bassline P/U String mute pad Bridge Hipshot D-tuner Hard Shell Case That's a lot of bass me thinks. I'll get pics if I can.

Someone on here went by crack convertors on walked out with a MM stingray for I think £99 or something stupid. Someone found a fender stu Hamm urge bass with kubicki pre-amp- I think.
-
Either this is a joke cause I'm a jerk, or you are serious. Either way: I did totally forget about your ray once I brought this and then found out an old friend in the US had a more than very nice Ray for sale, it's in my perfect colour and the neck is birdseyed all over. Anyway sorry for messing you about "/ I doubt the Mexicians date the neck heels or pockets on there stuff, however im sure the serial number would reveal it's date of manufacture.
Or I'll have the cash in about 3 weeks.
You have a link to this other stuff? Still I'd prefer cash. Nice interest so far but nothing solid. Edit: sorry found your gear thread. The only thing unwound be interested in is the SUB but as soon as I get a final price for hopefully my new ray, I'll be scooting the SUB I already have on here, I dint really need 2-3 of the same bass. Other than that I look forward to hearing from you.
You bastard, that is beautiful.
Buy it off me then I'm pretty open to trades, even if I have to put some cash up aswell. Still looking for: Barefaced midget, old school/vintage looking and sounding basses active or passive, or a lot of effects or an me20b (boss multiFX) with cash my way. Stuff im not interested in, anything that is big and/or heavy anything metal, pointy, synth, digital, signal bending (unless it's a wah). I hope some one takes this off me as I need space/cash for a larger guitar rack and hopefully a EBMM ray.

You should go try one however if you want one, it's not for everyone. At the end of the day it's a jazz bass. Regardless of switches. Pickups on in series vol and tone on 10, and there you go.
-
Well I have one, I got it straight from the factory in japan, it came beautifully setup, although I chaned the bridge to a badass 2 an it lost all it's vibe so put the factory standard back on. On the treble side, you have on/off switch for each pickup and a parallel/series switch. The bass side gives you an on/off switch for the active EQ. And two roller swtches;one for bass one for treble. Master tone and master volume The neck is the standard jazz profile, although mine seems a bit thinner than other standard hazard I've played, it's also finished in the orangy lacquer for vintage vibe. Tone wise, it's a jazz tone basically. 70s spacing so it's a got an extra treble bite, also the added switches gives you a lot of variation. My only negative is the pickups and active EQ. The pickups are the cheap ceramic ones, I upgraded mine to fender custom shop 60s and the overall sound is a lot better, a lot clearer but still aggressive. The active eq (on mine) is very boomy past half way on the bass, the knobs arnt very graduated like on higher end pre-amps. However it's basic passive tone with the original pickups is very good. But it's so much better with alnico magnet pickups. That's it really, I've had mine since last November and it's about the only bass I can't bare to part with. It's a nice change though from the basic jazz design.

Fat or thin necks, StingRay sitting idle, Aria SB bought!
Prime_BASS replied to iconic's topic in Bass Guitars
There are the SLO special necks for stingrays, basically the sterling neck on a ray body, it's apparently a Jazz profile neck. Or you could get a used sterling but then it's still not a ray. I understand why some people may have difficulty going from fat an thin necks, for me the difference is I'm a bit speedy on slim and more accurate on fatter necks, but I don't have to much difficulty adjusting to each one. -
It would work but expectto wait a while. Just play the damn thing.
You got me curious, so I removed the pickguard. The pickup routing is, as I expected, a big square, bigger than the pickup, and won't look nice. In addition, I think this bass used to belong to a "Jim" at some point, who carved his name on the body under the pickguard! Not sure it shows clearly in the pictures. I also found that the greenish tinge is not the original, but just the way the blue fades! Because under the pickguard it's VERY blue (again the pictures didn't show it as much as you can see it in person), but it's still a different blue from later OLPs. Maybe I'll set a stand by the window just for this bass to fade the blue even further. Perhaps in another 15 years it gets a little greener
I that's more dirt, than fade.

What colour did you go for? -
Stingray Choice - 2EQ, 3EQ, or Classic (again!)
Hmm I seem to be finding that the 2EQ models I want are actually MORE expensive than some of the 3EQs, and the 3EQs have cases. Im not talking about the offer basses at £999 here. Im actually trying to stay away from black even though a Ray looks great in black. I bet ill end up with 2 3EQs!
You know it makes sense to have a 2EQ if you can get one with the case aswell. No point having two of the same bass.... -
I think I saw this on the bay? There's a nice double humbucker one on now I may buy. Personally I prefer the White, maybe White pearloid.
-
I bought this as it was intended to be a project. After it came, I convinced myself otherwise! I don't get on with P-bass sound. Mark hoppus sig bass by Fender Mexico. Surf Green colour. Seymour duncan Quarter Pounder P-bass split coil. White pearloid pickguard 1 volume Knurled chrome knob. Jazz bass body Precision neck Schaller strap locks String through body. weight: 9.2 lbs Nut width: 42 mm That's it really, I got this used and so is suffering 1 or 2 dings around the sides, although the top and back remain pretty in marked. I had to do a lot of work to get this in a quality condition. It plays great and gives a great passive P bass tone, even without the tone knob. If you wanted a tone knob you could simply get a concentric pot and replace it with the single volume it has. Price is a very firm £310, that's posted, collected from Nottingham is £300. Trades: I am open but would prefer cash, I am willing to put in cash to anything I'd really want (active jazz type, musicman) I'd give a straight swap to anyone with a Barefaced midget or some kind if markbass head or cab (+cash if needs be) I'll ship it with (or give it you with) a spare gig bag it fits into that has a rip in and a spare nylon strap. Thanks for looking Stephen
Thanks! Sounds great to me. I might check one out. I keep looking at other basses, then coming back to the simple P bass design.
Do I smell GAS?
