1.
I don't see them under amps.
Sorry that's my bad, I set it to start at around 7:30 tonight. I'd be willing to let the head or both go for a firm £1000!!!
2. This thread should be banned, my gas is to high, I may explode. I want ray, I don't want to spend ray money, not even used money, I want a project, I don't want a olp project, I want string mutes, I don't really need another ray sounding bass, but right now it's all I like. I'm gonna see how well I get on with my next P-bass and if it goes well I'll mod that but who knows, there are some really nice used rays and one on the bay with the classic bridge. So I don't bloody know what I'll do with my cash.....
3. Now on eBay, I have also calculated the shipping cost. At £72.50
4. Could get picture of the neck and pedal board?
5. You've made the choice then. OLP for you. Everyone is different. Personally although I tried a lot of different rays, I went with a SUB as it was even half the price of sec d hand ray and to me sounded exactly the same.... So it was an easy choice, I want to get a good Pre-EB or one of those oldish ones made from old stock with a maple board, but I'd always be afraid of destroying it, and I have more gas for cheaper options to mod anyway. To me, as long as the wood is fine; strong, resonant, light, balanced, and the neck had good fret work it's a good bass. Electronics and hardware can be changed to make it a great bass.
6. Lots of positive interest but nothing definate as of yet.
7. Is that the OLP in your avatar, or is it the Ray?
8.
also you have missed the point of the thread. the whole point was finding out if putting different model preamp valves in different position's makes a huge change for the better in tone. this is a common practice with valve amps.
Or so you believe, I've only ever heard people change valves for gain differences, as foxen said, the way the amp is designed creates the tone, the valves just amplify a signal. t It may only increase 'tone' if the valves are on their way to kapputs ville.
9. these are whats left of parts from my custom jazz, selling as I want a Pre-EB Ray and want to start another project. all prices are posted!!!!!! I will also provide mounting screws if i can (only an issue on the pickups as the ones i have, have broken heads.) first is a badass II bridge, in great nick and only been attached to two basses, the string hole are a little worn but nothing major. saddles have V grooves. £52.50 Next is a varitone electromic circuit for jazz bass, one of those hand made US ones from eBay. Build qualiity is top notch, I was very surprised when it arrived how well put together it is, its also very quiet in the switches, and in general operation. The controls are as follows, two stacked 500k vol/tone pots (one for each pickups)the tone capacitor is I think some kind of ceramic thing, hopefully you can see by the pictures. There is also a series/parallel switch, to add +6db and more deeper lows and mids and the loss of highs(according to alex of barefaced bass) next is a bypass switch for the varitone circuit. the varitone circuit switch has 5 positions, hi cut, more hi cut, mid scoop, dark tone and finally even darker. I found it particulaly useful to cut the high buzz new strings can have, Phatten up the tone, also as few preset Eq settings on an amp with a nice lat output. they are £100 and up off the bay. this can be yours for £70! Next is a no branded set of EMG style jazz pickups. no idea about anything on these so they are cheaper than chips £20 Next is the fender japan jazz pickups out of my jaguar bass. Not much to say on these, fenders website says they are vintage jazz bass single coils, and they give out the typical passive jazz bass tone. ill label which is neck and bridge aswell. £30 Ok here is the main piece. 3 piece alder body, I was told it is US made and it does have a US stamp in the neck pocketand it does look like those bodies available on the bay. It has 2 dings in the front that are really hard to photo graph with my camera, and has some white scratches on the top side, not noticable as I only just noticed myself when photo graphing it. It looks nice and has the all important 'clean' routes to play with out a pickguard like Jaco, the sunburst is nice too. £75 and its yours. OK nearly there. next is the black pickguard, pictured with the body above. used but does the business. £20 also a jazz neck pickup cover £9 simples. finally!!!! is the mighty mite maple jazz neck. It is strangly beautiful to play, the low amount of lacquar allows for very fast play and is super duper light. Doesn't include the tuners, bushings, or tree tree. Its in great nick and has only 1 set of neck screw holes, and still has the mighty mite stamp visible. £70 or trade for a maple P bass neck. ok there a picture of the whole thing complete. if you want everything £260 thats cheaper than a squier CV or VMJ new which in my opinion comete is a lot better, you just meed tuners. Edit: yes the price has gone up as I had greatly miscalculated the total amount of this. However I still think that this is a grade A bass for that amount of money, especially as 3 main parts are US made and it has the bad ass bridge.
10.
Fender are much better when it comes to plain old passive and ive learnt that when I bought a Fender P Deluxe some years back then sold it on. Thanks for the offer, but I think at the moment im still sticking only with a Ray or Jazz. Cheers anyway.
Indeed, I'm still looking for the right P-bass for me. im pretty satisfied with my jag for a good jazz bass tone. Although ts got a load of switches and a naff preamp it does the standard jazz bass tone very well. How are you with Rics?
11. yeah nothing wrong with Jazzes. I like a good Jazz with 70s postion pups, phat alnico and nice low action. I just wish fender had a better active sound. G, I may be tempted to let go of my Jaguar with fender custom shop 60s for a nice price?
12. One. Either the jaguar or SUB Which Evers strings are brighter.....
13. There has been cheaper ones on the for sale forum here. eBay is bad place to get a hold of pre-CBS and pre-EB basses, one person with one who spent £500 on it see the Germans price there's at 2k and then they think they can aswell, even if it's a dog. I just saw a 63 precision neck on the bay for £1k+ I agree that the pre-EB rays are alot cheaper.
14. I would buy it to change it's voicing, so this thread seems rather pointless. You can change the sound up go a point. Example I changed my AD140's to what I stolen out of some Marshall head and it sounded exactly the same, although the gain kicked in sooner, it didn't make it sound like the Marshall. It still sounds like an orange. Plus tubes are rather expensive and powertubes are annoying to change unless younger used to it, and for bass the difference would be minimal and unprovable in a mix. I'd understand changing them for better life span though.
15. Personally I think 1700 is a lot steep.
16. My only new bass is my Jaguar, straight from japan factory. But on topic: 2EQ fuller bass and more cutting treble, also with rosewood board for softer sound and less attack unless you want it to gurn?
17. That's the danger of the bay. My jag is brought new and anything vie changed has been for the worse so I just changed it all back to standard, action is amazingly low. If I had the money to go spare I'd buy a new ray, but I'm gassing for pre-eb ray with a maple board. Anyway back on topic. 2EQ is better IMO, the lows feel much fatter and the treble cuts better.
18. He briefly mentions them in his interview with BGM, and it just says in there that they are 42 jazz deluxes with kings specs, flat fret board, sim led markers and a neck plate with his name on - I see where the £2k provide tag came from -_- Also that era IMO MIA fenders arnt to good with consistent quality. Good job I'm not a Mark King fan.
19. Courier the cab would be an extra £50 for those interest and 45 for the head.
20.
I forgot to mention I will be getting a 4x10 to go with this new amp when the money allows it! The current Trace Elliot I have is a GP7SM 130
Talk to alex over at Barefaced bass, he I a kind chap and replies to emails pretty quick. Personally, if you like your trace tone, then upgrading your cab to a larger one at 4ohms or buying another 8ohm will make it go quiet the bit louder
21.
I don't have one (yet) but I was wondering if there were any common swap outs mainly for the pre.
How would you know that it would sound better then?
22.
been browsing the internet and came across the orange im seriously interested in this and i wanted to get a different array of opinions from people to come up with a conclusion and if it would be a good decision to go from my ampeg svt450 to this bass head i will be using it with a 610hlf i decide to buy it thanks IanSB
It certainly is easier than carring around the massive head you currently have. Sounds great too, does clean and dirty very well, although the EQ is a little sutble, which for me isn't a bad thing as I can do EQ on my bass and set the amp flat.
23. I think you have a point there on pre-EBs they retain they're price pretty consistently where as even good SR4s are going for less than half te price new, but I think Gareth here is the kind to buy new..... I might get saving for a Pre-EB now.
24. Ampeg and orange are always a safe bet but cab wise depends a lot on what you want, small, big, light weight. Personally Orange AD200b On top of an ampeg or orange 8x10 That's if I had no limits. What I have and I'm trying to gain is 2x Orange Terror Bass 4x Barefaced 1x12 Massive sound!!!
