Also, thanks for everyone's responses so far. Still considering both.
Go somewhere and try both. And if you can try a EBMM sterling too.

OP raises a perfectly good question and it's more to do with the right tool for the right job. As touched upon in shep on bass thread thanks to Tayste. If we simplify all a preamp is needed for is boosted the input voltage to be able to be amplified further by the power amp. By that nearly every pedal I own is considered a preamp and any pedal with a level or volume control is too. The rest is purely for sound. EQ for example different bell curves and centre points etc, another pedal I use to boost the signal is my compressor and another is my looped. I also have a preamp/EQ pedal coming from Tom at COG. The two pedals actually labeled as 'preamp' are more OD pedals than anything, and why don't I just use a OD pedal, well simply no other pedal I've tried sounds like how my 'preamp' pedals do.

Singer's comments about my bass tone...
its as justified as her not actually stating what the real issue is if she is just trying to be polite and worrying that she might upset or offend her band members if she tries to tell them they arent nailing the groove correctly by fudging it with a non-excuse about 'tone' apologies if my previous comment appreared rather harsh in hindsight but if there is a problem with a song then you need to state constructively what the problem is so the whole band can try and overcome the problem not just make it vaguely aware that something is wrong and try and be all polite about it
It's always difficult mind. Our originals lot played Friday gone and on a new one for one reason or another the drummer decided to go nuts on the double bass drum. I hated it, it put me and the guitar right off. Baring in mind we both have to sing and play in time. Right after that song I told him there and then, just plain "don't do that, it wasn't right and it put us off" After he even thanked me for saying it then and how I did. -

Obviously something is bothering her. But at the sane time she has no clue how to express what she means. The OP suggested the recording was heavily distorted and a bit of a mess. She cones back with it's too clean, twice. A band meeting would be a bit far, maybe mention it lightly. If you are struggling to hook with guitar, try and simplify and hook with the drums instead. -
Id seriously listen to as many 3 piece bands and see what happens when their guitarist goes into a solo. I doubt very many bassists pickup the volume. More often that not the guitar is layered to fill out what ends up missing. Turning the volume up, I guess in a way does help, it's making the frequencies that are quiet louder etc, but whatever low end you have going on is going to drown most of the kick drum out and all people will hear is a low end mess. By the very nature of an overdrive it compresses so will bring up to level any frequencies that your bass lacks and thus fill out the sonic space. And like I said it's not just your job to fill out the sound.

I'm totally out of the loop these days on guitar gear. Our guitarist is after a new amp, preferably a combo. He has sounded best when playing through a JCM900 some kind of Marshall cab, he's also liked a fender Twin. As with all things he doesn't want to spend a huge amount of cash, not really grasping you have to to get something good. Maybe under 300 And he is looking to spend. He plays a Tele with SD hot rails and usually sets the amp up to a lightiah drive and then sends it screaming with a TS9. EQ usually is bass at 10 o clock, miss at 2 and treble around 2 Sewell. He isn't really going for a specific tone but is after something with the inherent qualities of the JCM or fender twin. Features galore is not a must and hopefully lightish. What is out there?
3?!? that's some dedication! It's a great pedal, I love the EQ section on it, as could never get quite enough low end out of my bassdrive (which otherwise sounds pretty similar)..
Same swapped my bass drive for the Xotic on a whim, so glad. I only got the second so I could have both low and high gain.

Having owned and heavily gigged and played the EBMM stingray, the older SUBs, EBMM sterling and the Sandberg basic. I have to say that the differences between them all are minimal and in mix it's even less noticable, unless the bass is expectionally loud in the mix. Even passive mode the Sandberg sounds very spot on. I did change how the sandbergs pickup is weird though to get even closer to that sound but mainly to get rid of the low mid hump. My vote goes for the Sterling though as it's coil tapped sound is awesome and it's a sound I want back, but the Sandberg is very very very well made and the zero fret I wish was on as standard on every bass.
How long would it be before we were having threads on Basschat discussing whether the Mesa amps made in Denmark were as good or sounded the same as the ones made in California? We all know which ones would end up being most desirable.
Neither.

Are you setting the Ohmage selector correctly? (not that it should make too much difference) Make sure your cab is working 100% too.

Nice its caused some healthy debate. Personally, I agree in not blending if its the wrong pedal. But I highly doubt there is something I can get off the shelf that does what I want in one package. Not necessarily one pedal that has built in blending will sound like the one you want etc etc, and as has been said that is a case of double standards. What would you do if the Assmaster had no clean blend, there is no telling that the next one or the next has the same drive sound you want. Blending is one tool in the box, among many. But this is all part of the right tool for the right job. I agree with shep, it is necessary to blend to create certain sounds.

Get the tecamp 1000 that's in the for sale section.
birdseye maple is by definition not the best wood for making necks out of. I've no idea why EBMM do it so much
Looks nice I guess. That's an extreme example granted, I've had other basses that haven't been anywhere near as stable as this status one I have, plus the tonal positives to be had win it for me aswell. It's a shame they are so expensive.

Obviously as in every thread like this my vote is forbthe xotic BB. Serves me excellently well, sounds great for a range of RATM sounds and even Audioslave(cochise) I use one always on with a 1khz. I'd look into doing that too as it really brings out the grind in a drive.
Really? I am a fan of Graphite - but don't see why wood wouldn't last as long as a composite if cared for.
I had a one piece birdseye maple neck on a EBMM sterling from 1994, and it was the worst neck for shifting, even mild tempreture changes would make it change neck relief. It had gotten much less rigid compared to when it was first cut. Id be heavily surprised if anyCarbon fibre or graphite neck was even half as bad. Even if made right, wood is just inconsistent that's that. If you do carbon fiber of graphite right, it's right there are no inconsistencies. By contrast I had a stingray from 93 with similar neck (rosewood board) and that was stiff and rigid as you'd expect.

Tom is a honest gent. Dealing with him so far has been like dealing with Alex at Barefaced. Can't wait to get my hands on my custom preamp/EQ/DI .

In reply to the OP, the reply button at the bottom renders going to the last page pointless. Unless you wanted to read the last few posts in the thread. Regardless I normally use the site in desktop version with the phone rotated as it fits the page width in sound enough and the text is large enough to read.

Simply the only thing you can do to run both is either buy an amp that runs down to 2 ohms, or pickup another amp.

I've replaced the neck on my cij jazz and despite the replacement designed to fit the existing neck pocket it just plain doesn't, while the neck that was on before was as snug as a bug in a rug. With that in mind I don't think a snug fit makes too much difference besides aesthetically. Of course it's nice if it does but I doubt that every body fender makes has a neck that's made to fit it. As long as it lines up straight and is attached as firmly as is possible really no need to worry.
From experience - don't add more distortion/overdrive, the biggest sound is (usually) your normal sound but louder.
From experience louder just means you are drowning out everything else. You aren't filling any more frequency spectrums. Drive can help fill out the loss of mids once guitars start noodling bit at the same time it's not just the bassists job to fill out the space even if the guitar is noodling away.
OMG I'M FAMOUS
Just got around to reading it the other day and I have to disagree with you on the blend comments.

Dirt. Distortion. Overdrive.

The start of us as a new. We have spent the past several years messing about essentially and are now solid in our overall sound and performance as a 3 piece. dirty guitar, grinding bass and pumping drums. This media is from only our second outing as a 3 piece and only the second time I've done any vocals live. Very nervous. Echoing a few sentiments, I doubt this would be of any use to people with more than a 'few' pedals on a board. I have 7 or 8 and at least 4 are always on. What kind of fall back do you have if it runs low during a gig?

Some pics here, and an enviable beard mate.
