YOUR ideas for the Recording forum - WHAT'S HAPPENING...
Prime_BASS replied to Skol303's topic in Recording
TBH a single new forum within the performance section that is for Basschat members bands and contains both live photo and videos as well as recordings and Promo videos would be the best solution IMO to both the ideas being discussed here and the over-abunance of pinned thread currently clogging up the gigs forum.
this +1 -
aha, that looks pretty good, I did not know they came with a bag too. Thanks!
yep, and can attach to your guitar gig bag too for easy travel. used to have one till I went nuts with pedals.

Good read. Glad your getting on with it. Can't wait to gig my Super Compact this Saturday.
This. I have a tube compressor on one channel mixed with a dirty channel with bass cut a fair bit. And a 1khz boost. Talkbass thread http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f28/tim-commerfords-setup-484295/ Can't link since in on my phone.
Linkage!

Do I want to sell my Bergs and go Barefaced?
Prime_BASS replied to fretmeister's topic in Amps and Cabs
That's entirely dependant on someone's budget. Lightweight gear is still expensive, I certainly can't afford it.
The genz focus LT stuff is silly cheap and not too heavy. The Ampeg svt210 are 11kgs and are cheap cheap cheap. -
Based on what? I take it you have owned, extensively gigged and lived with at LEAST one MB cab to make such a sweeping generalisation?!
Yes several, so no sweeping generalization was made. I love the heads though. -
I think that it's more to do with sellers wanting a better price for their stuff rather than letting it go for pennies. I got my stingray 4 from the states and after duty I paid about 650 quid, and I'm sure it's for sale at the minute for nearly 800. There are still stuff going cheaper, but a lot more sellers are prepared to wait for the right buyer, and a lot I feel have 'wishfully' priced their stuff without looking at the market.

Yeah it's biased on the fender tone stack of yester year. The bass and treble at 'flat' are boosted and the mids are scooped. They also interact a fair amount as they have a wide Q. Flat on the streamliner is the treble and bass cut a fair some and the mids boosted. I never really got on with the controls myself, and haven't on any similar designed controls, I.e the OTB.
Will one BF cab really match an ampeg 6x10 and I fail to see Mark bass beI Can't hear the nuances of myself playing through my stuffng not nearly an equivalent either, I just don't.
Alex has already answered this but I was mainly referring to the BF '69er cab which is a 6x10. So equivalent size, although lighter, cheaper, and louder, and before some one chimes in with "oh but a cab can be too loud" load of crap, it's more it's lows will keep up with the mids long after the Ampeg. The markbass comment. That was of an opinion, I've had some while they are nice sounding, great punch etc. The BF range (or an equivalent 1x12, 1x15) is all together lighter and louder, and while the sound is pretty similar, I prefer the BFs as a lot of the MB cabs I tried had a terrible low mid boom. I'll admit there was something about the compact I didn't like (although I had 3) and the midget was something too small (for me atkeast) to use as a standard alone cab and I feel the new Super Compact has rectified that (for me atleast) A big test on volume and sound was at rehearsals. Normally I use my GB head through a big peavey 8x10 which is fine, I can hear myself fine but I can't hear the nuances of all my gear and myself, so very little definition. And I do try and EQ the head to make it audible but no matter what I did I just couldn't get the sound out. I use a low gain drive all the time, so I like to gear it, if I can't it's pointless obviously. Played rehearsal with the BF and it's amazingly loud, loud enough for the room with some headroom to spare. Dispersion is great, I wasn't infront of it and I can still hear the mids, mainly because they haven't been lost in the mess of speakers and ports and reflections. I cab hear the grind of the drive, I want to hear it for Christ sake and I should be able to. I want it there in the mix, I don't hav . It on for my health. -
Quatersawn necks - do you have an opinion?
Prime_BASS replied to Chiliwailer's topic in Bass Guitars
The problem with this is that more rigid necks, although structurally advantageous, won't necessarily give a sound you prefer. I've yet to hear a graphite-necked bass I like the sound of. My main bass's neck was once described by John Diggins as "spongey" (although it never moves ), and yet that's my favourite-sounding of the many hundreds of basses I've played. Steve Swallow has also commented on this, that a more rigid construction is not what he's after in terms of tone.
I don't know what people go on about the graphite sound. I got a status neck on my JB and it's sounds pretty much the same as before but with a lot more eveness in string output and of course no deadspots. I also never have to tune it up. I can't say I've noticed a discerning difference between the vast amount of stuff I've owned. However I has a first year production Sterling, which had a birdseye maple neck, one piece. It had gone extremely soft and for made a negative impact on how it should have sounded. -

Is the finish really that bad though? I had a stinking great ampeg whose front cloth grill kept falling off, and Rolex coming off and fraying everywhere, it costs a fortune to get something that repaired properly, while I've actually dropped these cabs outside in the street and thwho come out with a scuff on a metal corner at the most, and in years to come if it wants fixing up it's easy to do and will cost the tin of acrylic. Carpet covered cabs end smelling like booze cigs and animals and look filthy. Yeah I agree to point where people are coming from but they are design to be used by working bassists and not as show pieces. Sound wise, a lot if critical skeptics harping on about elusive "tone" I get that too. However you decide how it sounds, BF cabs respond very well to EQ and colour nuance from bass/amp/effects, and that's the point. Why anyone would want there sound predetermined by a manufacturer who has no idea what the end user really wants anyway. Besides that when I'm on stage it's not always ideal placement, and I'd still like to hear it properly as much off axis as mush as on axis. Even BF admit you have to 'start again' with the cabs, what you normally do with your bass abd amp might not work with their stuff, so if you don't like what you hear I will take a stance of "you are doing it wrong". Although people taste and opinions are different and it's not always great working to achieve greatness.... Some of the people, I feel, who have a strange distaste for this stuff are either Hipsters trying to hard or people who would have everyone playing rusty fenders through big heavy worn rigs, but people pay extra for that stuff right? And for anyone who plays with a PA and uses a DI, your cab is about as important as the 'tone' a 9v battery gives you over a new fan dangled power supply. -

Somone mentioned a premium price earlier. An Ampeg 610 new will set you back over £1k while the BF is under. Markbasses cabs aren't nearly an equivalent but are cheaper, while many are still more expensive and either won't go nearly as loud or be as light. This arguement is done to death and always ends up the same, varying opinions about finish and the clean vs. Coloured crap. If you fancy the drive up to Nottingham to try my Gen 3 Super Compact you are more than welcome to. Its a great cab and I have a highly coloured sound that I can hear properly through it. -
My personal faves are the Fender MIJ JB62m. A medium scale jazz with a smaller body too. IIRC the Epiphone Jack Casady bass is a 32" and that is a cracking bass it's a shame you need to carry it in it's hardcase.

I see artists point, but for most part I believe if someone is a fan of a tune or artist they'll usually pay more for a hard copy or at least a digital one. I know I do. Because regardless of how good mobile data gets, 4G or whatever there are still times when I'm on a train or in a shop or on the way to work or in the park, or walking my dog or dropping a deuce when I flat out have no connection so thank god I already have the 250 or so songs I listen to the most already on my phone or laptop or on a CD.

Vintage games win. The NES design on mine is excellent.

That was a quick decision. You won't be dissapointed. I was going to go for a simpler unit but decided for more just cause it'll give me more options at hand and for future stuff as well. Out of interest what did you go for?

Who's got a ..... (Warning, new Barefaced content possibly)
Prime_BASS replied to Mudpup's topic in Amps and Cabs
Well I got my Gen 3 Super Compact last Tuesday. Fab cab. -
Something I'll never own now. Great.

Perfectly possible, although the difficulty I would find is in that you couldn't go either or and both or neither in any order you wanted. I just got a custom LS-2 based unit from Tom at Cog effects. If you arn't fussed about clean blends and phase stuff you could just get a 2 channel switcher with a on/off for each and an accompanying level control. If its small enough then it's easy to press both at the same time. Then you don't have to cycle from A to B to get to A+B. Two switch way if A is on you stomp both and it switches B on and A off or if you want both just stomp B. Mine is mint, I would hit Tom up as his build times sent too long either.
That looks like a great utility pedal, I think a lot of people could use that on their pedalboards.
Yeah Tom@COG has actually said he is building one himself as it's got loads of uses. Line boosting, parrallel lines, cleaning blending all sorts. And I'm sure IIRC he said he would offer it as a standard model too.

I think I got the first S. Compact through the post on Tues? So I doubt that anyone has a Big Twin 2 close by as of yet. I just xantbwait to put some welly through my compact when I get home.
my ONLY problem with the new barefaced cabs is that there doesn't seem to be anything the same dimensions as the super15... at some point in the future i was going to splurge and have two side by side.
I'm sure there is still a 2x15 they make? But if you need another super 15.... Then I'm afraid for the safety of the planet, isn't that how the start of Star Trek 2009 starts?

Looking for a Protec Case in the Uk
Prime_BASS replied to rainbowreality's topic in Accessories and Misc
Been on many buses with mine plus a variety of other bags at hand too. Always been fine, and as step says above, they are solid as a rock. My only niggle is that it's a really snug fit for a 34" jazz bass, it needs squeezing in at the top. P basses and other non offset body shapes are fine, they fit snuggly in the lining. -
Any ideas how it compares to the older 15" compact yet, sound wise? I loved my compact, and have been toying with getting another since I moved it on...
Sounds pretty much the same to my ears, I feel the attack of the notes and the punch are much better with this new one. If you got a super compact you won't miss the old compact any more.
