Not sure what to do with my bass, keep or trade, advice wanted!
Prime_BASS replied to MarkG3's topic in Bass Guitars
Is sell it in bits as stated somewhere above. You might even end up with enough to get a nice MiM jazz to do up. I mean even the badass will sell for a pretty penny since the market is still there for them. -
Do what you must mate, my gear has always been chopped and changed, however I be wrong to think I've saved money, far from it. But that's what banks are for?

So if i did want a short scale or longer scale bass with the same sound as a standard scale musicman bass with single pickup, how much furter or closer to the bridge will the pickup have to be?
-
There is guitarpartsresource which is a us site, so be weary of postage. They have a bass counter part that has quiet a bit of after market gear, such as knobs etc. Try a google search.

Up for sale is my beloved sandberg, only until I can get funds from elsewhere to buy bass that is on here or it gets sold first. I love this bass but the nature of Gas and an impending move means I need to lessen the blow to the old plastic. Sound wise, sounds like a cleaned up ray, with hints of that Warwick mid bump burp. Condition: its suffered from about 200 gigs the ast two years, and I've used it well, the neck has a fair bit of scratches, the body seemed to have faired better. All in all it is still in great shape any surface scratches are visible once up close and none effect the playability or sound. I feel the price reflects the overall condition of the bass. £400 collected, couriered at buyers expense. Located Nottingham. Now on eBay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330935401789;jsessionid=DAFB1EDB9A90D30DA1795541CB2C44EE?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D330935401789%26_rdc%3D1

I no doubt know that it probably won't be the same same as using heavier strings doesn't make your bass sound the same if you was tuning standard with regular strings. Would I be right in thinking that if I found where the sweetspot is in relation to the nodes or abtinodes and then found the corresponding one on a smaller or larger scale. That would be the equivalent?
-
My OP question in bottle: does the sweetspot move in different scales lengths? Answer: an arguement about violin tuners. Maybe I should have been a bit clearer in the OP? Let's say I have a EBMM which has a humbucker in The sweetspot(which must exist since quiet few people seem to mention such a thing, solets not throw handbags about the technicality of the ambiguity of phrases used and accepted by the majority of people, lest we end up talking about the how much break angle is needed on a god damn harp for it to have better tension/compliance/stiffness) And i want a similar sound but from a 32 inch scale bass, surely the pickup should be the same distance from the bridge as with on a 34inch scale if I was tuning with the same strings in the same tuning. In my head it would be it would need to be closer to the bridge somewhat? Same as if you want a similar compliance/tension at a lower tuning than stanard then you need to use thicker strings, no?
-
I love basses that have a pickup in the 'sweetspot' However I've been wondering recently, its generally accepted that its in between the two jazz pickups on jazz bass, musicman, modulus f/u, sandberg basic all have a single pickup there. These are all standard 34 inch scale. so I wondering, is the sweetspot different on different scale basses? (30, 32, 35 inch?) Stephen
The difference between 1000W and 500W is only 3dB, noticeable, but not by much. Changing speakers can cause problems as they have to match the box and more expensive speakers are not necessarily louder. One of the problems with mis matching speakers and box is that it may mean the speakers won't handle their rated power. Deltas have a limited Xmax excursion rating so this might be a problem. Without knowing the dimensions of your 2x10 and what drivers are in it this is all speculation, but you may be about to embark on a plan which won't deliver what you need. If they are big gigs then you ought to be thinking in terms of PA support anyway. with 500W into 4 10" speakers you should be louder than your drummer and he will have to go through the PA, so why would you choose not to? If you generally need more volume then changing cabs will potentially give you a lot more than an extra 3dB but simply swapping drive units might not be the best option.
In my limited knowledge 3db is the same as doubling the volume and to do that with power alone you'd need 10x the amount of power, 5000watts. I think you are right though changing heads is pointless, as all you succeed in doing is giving yourself more headroom. The problem with the superfly is that its a small amount of watts at 4ohms. You'd be better off buying 4 lots of 1x12 that are 8ohm each, or 4lots of 2x10 cabs that are 8ohm each. More speakers means more air moving, which means more noise.
I think tonally the LM2 is one of the best amps. I've read numerous times that with everything set flat it's actually pretty colourless, you get out what you put in to it.
Aye but everything flat isn't at 12. The filter knobs are half on at 12 o clock. They have a range of off to max. Like a standard volume/gain knob.

I got some heavy duty velco branded from Boyes in Arnold, Nottingham for a little over a fiver a metre. Plus my girlfriend works there so I usually get a discount too, so will be about £4 a metre. Ruined my carpet though.
I understand an amp is for everyone, but there are so many amps with the same small mid dip its unreal...but because it hasn't become an Internet myth (all Stingrays are one trick ponys etc) no one worries. Check out some of the Gallien amps. Most of them have a similar if not more extreme flat tone. The new MBs have a huge low end, lots if aggressive sizzle, and a dip in the mids. Orange, Fender, even Mesa amps can have it too.
I think some companies do it for pure lazyness/cheapness. GB seemed to have done it on purpose, they haven't hid what the tone stack is like, its meant to be that way for pure oldschool people, of you want flat and clean they have the shuttles and shuttlemax. I don't mind the mid dip but personally I like a flat reponse as I fond it easyier to work with on a gig, and most of the time its minu te changes, where as if there is a mid scoop I ave that to contend with too. And equate common on this kind of toe stack is that the frequency bands blend at too much into each other. If you are relying on your cab and amp purely for the bass sound then personally that mkes it even more difficult to work with.
Yep, and that's the conundrum - wanting to use, and not have to replace, my Epifani cabs because they work great in some regards but with the Streamliner not so much. I guess I want to have my cake and eat it too. And not end up with a pile of different cabs!!!
Use a different amp?? The LMK should do fine since its eq is pretty flat at 12o clcok. The streamliner uses a tone stack similar to the fender bassman, natural mid scoop with boosted lows and highs, flat will more likely ne the bass at 9/10 o'clock and the mids boosted nearly to 3 o clock. You need to figure out what you need from your amp. Personally my sous is eq'd without an amp or cab, as that is what either goes to desk or to FOH, the amp's eq is used to help me hear on stage and that is about it, when the sound has to be from my amp then I EQ to the room.
The Ampeg Micro VR is supposed to offer similar sounds to the VT Bass, and the SVT210AV cabs are like mini quarter SVT810s. Amp and cabs are light as a feather and pretty cheap too! Should be plenty loud enough for pub gigs. (random image from google, not mine)

Why would adding a 2nd cab make it fart??
I did the two ampeg svt210 things for a while does the sound of the big 810 well on budget while saving weight and space. If you have the time and spare cash is get the barefaced 69er as its supposed to clone the sound only with better performance and lighter and smaller. As far as head or amp goes. Get your self either a GB shuttle or MB LMtube, the preamp tube is going to give you the harmonic distortion, the cb will give you the overall colour, and the microtubes will give you any drive you want.
Yep, that looks way off.
Does look wired, maybe not setup, the sandberg bridge is fully adjustable. I have the two outer saddles all the way to the centre then the middle two evening spaced between each other.

Up for grabs is my StageClix wireless Pack. This is a top end digital wireless system, suitable for all instruments. Highly regarded with stunning audio quality. It's this unit here as seen at Bass Direct: http://www.bassdirec...Stage_Clix.html Not this is the 'Pack', not 'Jack' system, this means it is also suitable for use with active electronics. It's is also the 'version 2' model which has the 'cable capacitance' mode that was not on the original transmitters It's in excellent condition, with only typical very light marks from live use (you'd need to go looking for them!). The Receiver has some velco on it to hold it down, but i can remove that if you like! It's complete as it would be new, with case, transmitter, receiver, 2 styles of belt clip, power supply (also happy to be powered on a multi-supply such as a daisy chain with your effects), plus 2 spare cables that I had made (the original has a straight jack, I had two made with right angles). The StageClix units come with a 2 year warranty of which mine still had some months left. I'll include the original proof of purchase so you can claim on it if needed. This runs out this October. I brought it at retail which is around £399 I'm asking a VERY reasonable £300 posted in the UK. I'll get photos on Sunday so folks can see the condition is still excellent and shots of the additional cables that come with it. Cheers
