I'll see what I can get out of my bits (oo-er) I don't know anything about MCM, but I suspect he's not just relying on his Dist/OD pedals, bet he's EQ'd the hell out of his sound. Si
True that! I've been suggested all kinds of stuff in the past to get close to his core sound, Shep's helped a bit on the more complex and textured pieces which include some cool octave up bass solo's with crazy warbles when going back down. If Ant is right (which I don't doubt) then my next destination is indeed the boss MT-2.

I see, seems like a long time for effectivily an unfinished body? I know the guy is very busy, Shep put it in perspective for me aswell. If you have just a body to complete, or a fairly intricate custom bass that is going to cost a couple of K. To finish, what are you going to finish first? Been thinking of getting my new neck for my sterling done with him but if I have to wait more than a few months then it's just not an option.

Question about rigs for Outdoor Gigs.....
Prime_BASS replied to Salt on your Bass?'s topic in Amps and Cabs
Morning, Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have an outdoor gig coming up for the jubilee. At the moment, we're not sure if there will be full PA support for anything other than vocals. I've run several searches and cant find the steer I'm after. As I've never played outdoors before, I wasnt sure what affect this has on a bass rig. Do you lose a lot of lows and reinforcement outdoors? I'm assumuing you do with no walls near you, wind factor etc? I have an Orange Terror and a Compact. In your extensive experiences and infiniute wisdom, could this deal with a suburban street party? We play rock...ish covers (Ben E King through to Nirvana with a heavy rock vibe), have two guitarists, and I'd say the drummer was moderate to loud. I'd be happier with PA support of course, so will push for it, but in the absence of that my initial feeling is I need more speaker area....... Again, sorry if this is covered loads elsewhere. Thanks for any input.
IF you are worried then I would get your rig outside ona similar surface as what the stage will be to a similar size open space as what the audience will be. Set up, stand back (as if you are in the audience) and play, if it needs more bottom end, add some, stand back and hear it again. At least you'll know what to do when the time comes -
As much as I know the 69er isn't finished as of yet but has the smallest dimensions and wieght compared to many other 6x10s I'm tempted to actually order one but there isn't anything wrong with the compact anyway. Does everything I want it to.

what happend? Full story? I saw pics of something 'finished' now your only just getting it???
I use a Boss MD-2 to good effect, I can't listen to your vid just now so not saying it will acheive that sound, but I find it's a great Distortion for bass, it has treble and bass controls too. Si
I'll be interested to hear your thought once you've heard the vid, truely messed up sound! Ive tried a lot of OD's and a few being from Boss and the Bass EQ knob has been rather useless. I've only tried one distortion from boss and it was fairly ok but lots of mid scoop and zero punch.

Something very nice form the US of A has been purchased. Traditional, but different at the same time.

I don't really rate the multi pickup bongos as the different placement IMO makes the bridge bucker sound thin and too much like a jazz bass. If you are seriously considering either a 6 or 4, then I would try the different options available to you, even if you have to travel far, just so you know before you go ahead and spend money on something you may not be 100% happy with. Although for me there is one six string bass I'd really love http://www.sheponbass.co.uk/for-sale/ that or the new MM roscoe. Sadly I have to look after my own flock before I go and buy something else.
-
I'm sure if it is setup nicely with some great strings and the volume pot is upgraded it would sound a crap tone better, but I feel sorry for any kid buying this to start their bass career, there are better basses for similar money out there that will keep them spanking all day long for years to come.

I tried the little ampeg setup at RED Dog Music in Edinburgh. Fair to say I was very impressed with the sound, overall volume and light wieght. I wouldn't want to gig with it though. 2 of the cabs may be the ticket. Or there is the CL version now aswell, with 100w less power handling.. 2 stacked vertical will be nice setup. The Orange with it's own SP cabs may the ticket as although they are neo and the actual specs are crap it sound may be more what you after, not too deep and a wierd midrange. I have an ampeg 806he. It is a proper ampeg cab, heavier than my sofa, and an optional tweeter, although the cab's untweetered sound is still fairly high. Can be yours for £245 It's medium monster cab.

Question about rigs for Outdoor Gigs.....
Prime_BASS replied to Salt on your Bass?'s topic in Amps and Cabs
I have an Orange Terror and a Compact.
Stop worrying. I have no doubt you'll be the loudest thing there, without even pushing on the OTB's endless power..... BTW I've done a few outdoor and non-pa equipped gigs with the compact and a few different heads, including the OTB, you'll be fine. -
Just fitted an East Musicman Stringray preamp!
Prime_BASS replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Accessories and Misc
I know this is a hard question to answer , but how would you describe the the tones and differences between the two ?
I have put the 3 band MMSR john East pre in my 95 Sterling bass. Despite it not fitting properly and having some wiring difficulties (that were my fualt) it sounds incredible. The sterling and stingray preamps are different slightly buit still sound inherently the same, I needed a new preamp and wasn't fussed about the coil switching. I omitted the coil tap switch. The preamp is very high quality and sounds it. I first heard one in a preEB stingray and wasn't impressed but as far as replacements go this is the best 'drop in' however now it's in and working it the best preamp I've heard. Sounds like a stingray preamp but a lot cleaner with a lot of headroom, the knobs have such a wide range you'll never feel like you need to boost anything to max. The great thing is there is no centre detent and no true flat, so you don't get bogged down with thinking it needs to be flat etc, you move the knobs to where you think sounds best. The mid option is the best part for me. it's the best midrange fuinction on anything I have used. Each frequency is very present, evben when you are touching the 100hz it doesn't get mixed up with the bass knob. when it's the mid is in it's centre detent it is like an off switch for it. I boost the low side of the bmids just a touch as when using a pick it really adds that roundness that gets lost between a pick and fingers, especially on a musicman bass. Very nice preamp, well worth the price. -
yo bro, if you're after the crack distortion takeshi uses a boss mt-2 metal zone for the 'extra gainy' bits around that era, like the first riff you hear in that and the riff in shodoku etc. the core tone comes from his pearce BC1 preamp, but you can get pretty close if you whack up bass and treble, the key is using a parametric EQ and massively boosting the mids at somewhere like 1khz i used to geek over this guys tone totally and its really helped me develop my own sounds.
Cheers, this gives me some ideas to check out. As the band is Japanese, and despite being fairly large at their peak, there is very little info on anything I can find. Tried emailing Takeshi's blog page biut couldn't navigate. I am surprised that he use's the MT-2 as a lot of the boss pedals that arn't bass specific suck a lot of low end. The closest I got to a low gain sound he has is using a BD-2 and then boosted the low end a lot with a GEB-7 but it sounded fake and hollow compared to the clean sound's low end. I will check out that pearce preamp though. I love MCM so much, I have the complete discography, just missing one alternative mix of midi surf that is on a youtube vid. Takeshi Is my favourite bassist in a band setting.

Fender Roadworn Jazz - everything comes to he who waits!
Prime_BASS replied to ash's topic in Bass Guitars
I really rate the RW jazz and precision over anything else brand new, just on the neck alone. I don't mind the fake relicing so much, and all the ones I have tried have sounded ace, been super light and played amazing for what they are. It is just a shame about the price tag. -
Which BC Member's Bands do you want to see, and have seen?
Prime_BASS replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Planning on seeing Our Helical Mind this Saturday but I've come down with birdflu! (aka manflu) Haven't seen anyone else really as Nottingham's range of bass player's can't see past their uncut fringes...... Would be good to see anyone come see me in Cut the Heroics, we are on this friday in a BOTB final, supposed to be on at 10pm for anyone interested. -
I would stay well clear of this. A few of the more impressionable youngsters that I've done some substitute teaching for have these. None are by any stretch any good. IMO the best part is the pickup but my idea of a P bass is really warm not much treble, but the pickup and no tone control make it very harsh sounding. It would be worth note that Pete Wentz doesn't really use this bass unless Fender has told him too. Personally I would save the pennies and get the 60's classic vibe P.
Circle K are the ones I was alluding to - I've known Skip for ages and he and I are on the same page regarding strings and instruments (longer scales, balanced tension, simple electronics but great pickups etc etc). Check out his awesome Knuckle basses too! Glad to hear that you can put together balanced sets with Newtone - the Circle K are hybrid nickel/stainless which sounds and feels great but it's the balanced tension which is the long overdue paradigm shift.
Are there any sound sample? I'm looking at re-stringing a bass BEAD but with the tonal difference in some places on different strings means a lot of songs for my band would mean I need two basses for!!
-
I actually wanted to give these ago but wanted to hold out till I actually heard them, now that the RJ vid is there, they sound exactly like brand new regular slinkies. I think I'll stick with me DR Hi-Beams. They are just better, #js.

For less than £200 pounds you can't go wrong.

http://youtu.be/b_yfX3RRNxU Here is a good example of what I'm aiming for. And pretty much all of Takeshi's bass sounds in this era.
-
I have the Mastrotron atm but the geiger counter I have coming does the sound I am after fuzz wise, and I doubt I'll be needed both for a single song. Where as I know I'll be using a solid drive a lot. It's so hard to find a good drive for bass without having to buy it first. I really want to try the Okko BASStard but that's nearly £300 last I looked, Things ion my list to try include Fulltone OCD Microtubes B3k B7k EBS valvedrive but thats about it. Most appealling is the OCD as it's high pass helps keep the bass bassy. Although I'm willionmg to sacrifice some low end for the right sounding pedal, as it'll be mixed with a direct clean/sub channel.

Shuker may be handling my custom neck for my buggared Sterling. don't fancvy waiting asz it's my only bass............

My past experience says otherwise, unless you can find me some good examples. I've had German and Korean before and ideally a roadworn jazz would do the trick but find one in the price bracket is slim!
-
Don't get hung up on being US or Jap made. The quality of Korean and other eastern made instruments right now is brilliant...especially around that price range.
Not hung up at all. It's just past experience tells me it's easy to find a good one from the US and Japanese builders. I've had tonnes of basses made from, korea, indonesia and mexico, and actually didn't rate anyof them. Ive also had a fair few MIJ AND MIA basses and guitars and not one has been 'bad' uncomfortable yes but not bad in anyway. People tend to highlight the bad ones from the markets you don't expect to find a bad one in, if you follow. We actually discussed what the bass should be a lot and it was more his decision than mine. I tell anyone looking for a starter bass who turns their nose up at a Squier, that a good one will set them up for life.
You could buy 6 of my used Japan made Ibanez RB950 for £500 (if you could find them)
We actually found an old RB series which had been modded with a MM pickup, but missed out. He currently has an ATK aswell.
