Lost Modulus Graphite SPI-5 Sentimental Value - Need to Find
Prime_BASS replied to tds2277's topic in Bass Guitars
If it's still in EU I'd try bass sites with appropriate ending. Itally for example .it Spain .es (iirc) Although I'm surprised a pawn shop sold it over seas, and won't give you any info. Especially if it was sold with in days of you not paying, even back in 2007 not many people brought stuff that expensive secondhand and overseas. The shop should have been more helpful just out of morality. Hope you find it. -
Playing bass wearing black silk gloves - for BETTER TONE
Prime_BASS replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I've burnt a hole in them after a week. Although again I play at least an hour a day, more over weekends. So they've had best part of 20 hours use. They sound great though so if I was to keep using them it may just be on long ass recording sessions and rehearsals where the sweat really rains off me. The band don't want me to use them live, even though they are sexy as hell. -
Considering you've only played this stuff the once and no one said anything bad, you are ok so far. Usually finding what key a piece is in is helpful. If I get stuck I try and keep on the beat and use root and fifths a lot through in an octave every 4th bar or so... At least it seems like I know what I'm doing. Although all the stuff I seem to play (in originals) is in major or minor.

What a difference a speaker makes! Eminence love enclosed within...
Prime_BASS replied to Moos3h's topic in Amps and Cabs
Now I've gotta find a use for the Ashdown 15" speakers!
The cones as clocks, and the magnets as key holders? -
I just took the strings completely off, all at once as im installing my favourite pickup. The whole top section (thats adjustable via small grub screws.) has come completly off and the two side sections that I assume hold it on, have come clean off, not even any pressure applied and they were flimsy as wet paper. Anyway, how to fix? My guess is that I need a whole new nut. I'm sending an email to CS at warwick to see what they say, but in the mean time ideas?
-
Let's look at it from another angle. Do you like the the string bashing? If so why? Why do others find this smashing appealling? Let's not get confused by the fact its Wooten, I couldn't care less if it was a child - have tuaght in the past. I think majority of the bass "community" are rather narrow minded to be entertained by such stuff. IMO
Not much to discuss really, by your own admission your 'no Victor Wooten fan'. You've managed to find an exceptionally ropey quality clip and used it to justify your view. The discussion would have more merit had you chosen a better quality clip. To criticise VW (or the audience) on the basis of that clip says more about the OP than VW. I'm not particularly a fan of VW or that style... BUT, I do know that to ignore someone of Wooten's obvious ability and not take a closer look will more likely upset your musical development more than it will hurt Victor Wooten.
Obviously you assumed I had wasted my valuble time searching youtube for a bad example of somene playing what is in my opinion aweful "music". I was actually on something completly un-related when it came up as a suggestion, it could have been any tom dick or harry, but the fact it was this "talented" "God" (as some even commented on the video) and people cheering made me want to discuss the matter of people liking all that clciky nonsense. Again couldn't give a damn who the player is.
Of course, he wouldn't play like that in a different musical situation as he said himself. But showing off tricks at a trade show should be seen for what it is and not taken too seriously - what is wrong with seeing a master craftsman showing off his trademark licks anyway?
I would say Beethoven has a particular finesse on a piano, and has trademarks, or a style. I don't recall him ever punching the piano strings. At my next gig, I'll be learning from VW and stealing the coverted technique of knuckle against string, I hope someone video's it, my ego needs boosting.

I love this guy. I love MCM and his current work with AA= Last I saw he had a standard P-bass but just saw this vid. http://youtu.be/po1UgM6B0YA Anyone does this before, with sound samples? cause the sound on this vid is useless....

Sorry for poor spelling on my blackberry and it has no mobile version of the site. By that estimation, I can freely begin a song by clapping aginst the strings, not playing any notes because it builds tension. Even as a bassist I find majority of solo acts incredibly dull and boring. It's all meaningless dribble to me, especially if the piece is over 2:30 and has more muted percusive "technique" than notes which only serves as sub-defuge, to distract us from the fact its devoid of feeling because it's all just for money. Don't get me wrong, I'm not blind to the fact that he or others arn't good. It just astounds me that people find that kind of dribble "amazing". I must be one of few people who find it boring, pointless and condescending of those who can't perform that fast, or like clicking their own strings for groove and feeling but because they don't have a back catalogue of achievements are frowned upon. This is of course my own opinion, I was just interested in why people like that clicking nonesense.
-
Itks not so much that he does the punching of his bass, its the people that like it. While I'm not classically trained and probably know nothing about composition, but those fast bits are totally cold, void of any feeling and happen randomly towards the end. Coupled with the punching, it jst makes me want top listen to JLS, or some equally processed tosh that the producor and marketer have decided everyone likes. I like to think I know my way around a bass but if I, or you, started smacking muted strings people would think its sh*t and that I'm crazy. However because this guy had 1 or 2 success and is supposedly talented he gets away with it. Then we get into the psychology of being in a crowd.

Underpowered and Farty - Replace Preamp Tube?
Prime_BASS replied to cytania's topic in Amps and Cabs
Unless you had been absolutly ragging the compact with 1000 + watts I find hard to believe its the driver in the cab. By input jacks. I mean the effects loop, into the return slot. -
Our guitarist had one of those pickmaster things. It was ecellent right up until the moment the handle snapped off. After cutting 20 pics no less.
the fact that his video has made it into a thread just because of the last sections shows how important the slap thing is for his publicity, gets people talking
I realise people like different stuff. One man's chalk is anothers cheese or whatever. I would honestly walk away disinterested if I was at bass clinic if some crazy guy started effectivily punching his strings on stage, even more so if people cheered.
The piece Wooten is playing in the video in the OP is a snippet from a live version of this - You might not change your opinion of whether you like it or not, but it's only fair that you see it in a decent quality. The video you posted initially is bloody awful and would make any bassist sound sh!t IMO. Level playing field for basing your opinion
but I dont think it really needs the fast sections during the closing measures. To me its got no feeling and it essentially ruins the piece. What is a somewhat mellow and pleasant tune becomes a cock display. All those string hits with no cuase.

1 minute and 20 seconds of someone not playing music and then everyone claps........ http://youtu.be/FFhYEQVfhOo Why do people like that stuff. I'm no Victor Wooten fan, but I don't hate on the guy, this just came up on my youtube during today. I think even if the video and sound quality were amazing, it would still make me hate it. Discuss.
Does Doug not set his pick ups high enough that he touches them with the strings to give that specific click on every other note. I guess that would take a bit of effort to get it spot on but Doug must be one of the most entertaining of the solo bassists IMHO. He has quite a unique sound for this day and age as someone mentioned earlier in the thread. Dave
I think this too. coupled with the low action. Just been youtubing some vids of his, and on one it goes through his Genz-Benz shuttle 9.0 settings. It appears that he cuts 2.khz mark by the full -15dB that the shuttle allows, along with the low boost filter engaged (60-30hz boost). despite the dramatic mid cut, it still a fairly flat sound (IMO) so I would hazard a guess that the shuttles mid range has a fairly narrow Q.

Should I consider swapping my Ampeg SVT for an Orange AD200B
Prime_BASS replied to jembullo's topic in Amps and Cabs
the OTB and AD200 are vastly different things. Personally I prefer the orangeAD200b over the SVT, to me it's not as coloured compared to the SVT, I also prefer the break up on the orange between clean and dirty. If it's not broke don't fix it though. -
I reckon you can add about 25% to that price by the time you add shipping and UK VAT & import duties.
plus another 40% for profit.
