Recommended basses for playing up the dusty end
Prime_BASS replied to thebassman's topic in Bass Guitars
Warwicks have easy access up that side and with 24 frets aswell. -
Well done dude! A good friend's band is playing as well - Def Goldblum. They are collectively, MC Duke01 (who appeared on our last EP) and the Nottingham band, Cleaver Hook. Together they are the most amazing Public Enemy covers act!
That actually sounds amazing! We are working on new material and recording but for the young and poor and perfectionist kind of guys we are we dont want just any old crap that has been cobbled together (by me, im currently doing more work on this than i ever did at school) Plus we all work and or do school full time so finding the days to Also since we got the nod we were to play we got contacted by a few Promoters. A lot of others have said it does really help with raising bands profile but a lot work has to be done by us also, which is fine. Its finding the best for the cheapist. Plus if I do it (mixing tracks) I can focus it all on bass ;P
Well if you add the costs up for running a festival of this size...... £400k isn't an awful lot. We've played Glastonbudget before and it's a great experience and can do great things for your band. If you plan it correctly, you will up your band following dramatically.
How do you mean by plan it correctly??

new pickups (and pre?) for my warwick ss1 4st- recomendations
Prime_BASS replied to LukeFRC's topic in Bass Guitars
that's a shame, they would have been good to try. I don't hate the MEC, but just a feeling of how they react to playing styles and right hand technique and sound a little compressed, like the top end should have more space and bottom more depth, the nordies had that. hard to explain, though the MEC have a bright sound with a hint of the deep darkness of the tone. I love the bass but not amazed with the tone... if that makes sense
Frequency limiting? the SD's will definatly be brighter a have a extended low end, depending on model. they also tend to have an even range (providing the bass is setup ruight) -
Not sure if this should be in here or Gigs or Events, but as its not a bassbash and im more interested in who is actually playing and peoples opinion etc than advertising my band playing (althouigh I am a little bit) If I am wrong then obviously pleasze move it to the right section. So my band is playing this festival weekend thing thats apparantly a huge and big deal (despite me never even hearing of it until the week before our audition) I have a few questions and want peoples thoughts on such an event. Apparantly last year saw 10,000 visitors and this year they are expecting 15,000, if this is true I am fairly stoked to play. How many of you have heard of or been to, or played at or know friends or local bands that have played this event in the past 8 years??? We as a band were so surpised to get on the bill at all as a lot of bands (in nottingham must have been over 100) from all over the place had auditioned, and only 130 bands are going to be on (on various stages) Since lets say as a guesstimate about 500 bands auditioned, the thing was they could all potentially get through in a battle of the bands type settings. So I guess it must be good that a young (15 to 21) originals band is playing? I also guess a few bigger bands (cover acts such as Guns 2 Roses and Oasish) would be on the bill and have no "audition" phase, and obviously get the bigger stage. The thing that gets me is the price point. Its glastonBUDGET, and for an adult with a caravan its nearly £80! day tickets with out are roughly half, and I know other festivals are close to £200! However its a struggle getting people to go to a local gig for £3 on a weekend where I am from, I find it hard to believe that 15,000 people will be going. Thats a taking of around £400,000! We aren't getting paid! So where does all that money go????? (links in teh sig the site is still in progress for the bands section)

I really find Rage songs fum to play. Easy ones like Clear the Lane, and People of the Sun, as the riffs are relativily straight forward. The brudge in Clear the Lane allows for some improvisation aswell. I alway thought Rio - duran duran was a fun song, and Forget You - Cee Lo Green. But I wouldnt say they were easy.
-
then for when you have to actually play songs in front of people (live at gigs) just play a fretted note instead. for the time being. For me fretted notes sound more percusive and jump out a lot, and using bombtrack as an example, its fairly quick set of notes, but even on the record the bass in non descript. When I play it my way the bass part comes more a live and helps bring the beat in under the guitar. Part of playing bass is playing it how you feel comfortable and what you like. I wouldnt say dont bother as thats limiting. Keep practicing itll come, and dont get disheartened if it takes a while. I've been trying to play the beginning of bombtrack for over 2 years. If you commit itll happen. I would try a lighter guage string, a lighter touch, and an increase in tension(break angle thing) these should make it easier.
-
speed with the fretting hand? or the plucking? It may be the loss of tension that some open strings have against fretted notes/strings. More noticable on the lower strings. If its a case of fretting hand I can only suggest practice practice practice. I do have the same problem, for example with "bombtrack - RATM" its normally played with the open E and A strings, however i find it a thousand times easier actually fretting the notes around the 3rd and 5th frets. One thing I did when I was playing gaytar was "fret" above the nut for open strings. If its your plucking hand then increasing the tension with better break angles from nut to tuning post may help.

Using an Active bass on passive amp setting
Prime_BASS replied to clashcityrocker's topic in Amps and Cabs
Depends on how much headroom you feel comfortable with on your gain stage. Personally I like a lot, but a lot of active slots I find the gain knob needs winding way past 12'o clock. I find amps with one slot have better range on the gain stage, and some have a -dB cut button. Also much easier to work with. You should use which ever one achieves the appropriate gain level to get the most out of the amp. -
sex on fire is a good one to learn and play............................

First Bass: Epiphone Thunderbird IV Go To Bass: Warwick Corvette $$ Your Bass: EBMM 1994 Sterling 4H Warwick is the btter bass but people know me for playinmg EBMM or EBMM type basses.

Hey man. I'd like to know what this crest factor is?????? If I understand it a buzz is cuased by an overload in signal? if so you could try a compression? Are you sure its nothing internal on the amp? At some volumes I've had old valve amps rattle a fair bit, and some notes make my room rattle like buggary where as others dont, even at low volume.
From my experiences (seen from both sides), paypal will act and sort stuff like this very promptly and they have set timelines by which parties have to act otherwise it gets resolved in favour of the other party.
True. However, a few years ago I sold on ebay, The thing was working last I sued but didn't have the equipment to test if it still was, I did state this. Anyway I went on holiday straight after sending it, for 2 weeks.... When I got back I had 1 message from the buyer saying it was broke and notifications from paypal saying that a case had been opened etc. becuase I hadnt replied in 10 days they awarded the buyer his money back, and he wasnt obliged to send me back the item, however paypal said I could message him and "ask" for it back, i did so and never heard anything. Paypal informed they couldnt do anything about aswell. So i was £100 out of pocket and had no item either.... Anything could have happened to me, I could of died, although they weren't to know, but the space between his first email to me and paypal awarding money (based on my listing and his message and my no reply) was 12 days. Before then I had put through a considereable amount of cash their way, but since then I've not used them and never wish to ever again.

Playing bass wearing black silk gloves - for BETTER TONE
Prime_BASS replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Couldn't find any black silk ones so I've been using these!
Strangling gloves? -
Not at all dude. Although, I would go back to the listing and look at what postage was offered and stuff like that. People try and get away with there own T&C's on the listing but ebay's rules state that you can't. Anyway.... The case is solid, he should of had it insured, as usually (parcel force through the post office) you have to have it insured if its over £40. at the same time due to the insufficient packaging (should have been double boxed IIRC) he wont be able to make a claim, also by ebay's rules he is liable to the cost of a full repair or the cost of the item(sale value). You were diplomatic in your approach and he was silent. I too wouldnt be so bothered by the loss of £15 but its the lack of comms and bad attitude.

The answer to back pain/back ache from gigging/bass guitars?!
Prime_BASS replied to Musicman20's topic in General Discussion
After I left my socially crippling job, I had tones of time on my hands and started exercising. Since, I've felt 100% amazing and better. I've put on a (healthy) 1 and a half stone, as I was under wieght. I eat better and sleep better. More importantly play bass better. I think everyone should try exercise. i was never unfit, and never really bothered, but glad I did, shifting gear is a doddle and my endurance is great for longer sets and more exuberant energy on stage. plus 1 to you MM20 -
Playing bass wearing black silk gloves - for BETTER TONE
Prime_BASS replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
to save opening another thread. I've just ordered some of these silk gloves, as I too kill strings in maybe 1 or 2 play through. I just went through a set of rotosounds in 1 practice. Since I use DR's mainly and love the new string tone they have, I cant wait to try these gloves with them to see how much longer they last. even if i get an extra Rehearsal or a few days of practice at home with them it'll be worth it. Will post back when they arrive with my opinion. -
Hi Guys! I'm Stephen from Cut the Heroics, im the keeper of the BASS. Nottingham based catchy pop-punk sort of stuff, nothing like anything out today, more 90's influenced. We've been together about a year as we are now. We've done a few small gigs, and are working on the lead singer takinmgh up rythm guitar. Here are our links: http://www.facebook....185244798174871 Facebook page, has a mixed song on. http://www.glastonbu...et/en/node/6294 GlastonBudget Page http://www.themazero...cut-the-heroics Glastonbudget Audition Review. would appreciate spreading the word as our glastonbudget ticket sales(ticket brought through our page) decides which stage and when we play.
Could be worse. I've played mid-week gigs where almost everyone has left by 10pm leaving the headline band to play almost for themselves. Should be OK on a friday night . . . hopefully.
Makes for a good late night and drunk practice.

A great drummer for me is someone who is technically good but can hold the rythm on his own, giving me a free range. The guy with have now has the moments of pure excellence and others, he even admits, he is trying too hard which cuases all kind of issues, I've even changed basslines to be more straight forward to keep the beat. Some guys are so easy to play with others not.

Precision vs Jazz vs Warwick vs other Precision
Prime_BASS replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Bass Guitars
The PJ won for me on the second clip. First clip I didnt really rate on of them. J was the most disappointing on the second clip, with both pups on you loose a lot of the mid range, same for the Warwick which is why im struggling to understand your complaint on "middle-y" sound. It's all about the mid-range anyway. Love my Wariwick Corvette $$ to bits.
