1.
Have you got,or tried the fretless ?
Hi! I've not tried or got one pf the factory fretless basses but I do have a Richwood short scale that I de-fretted myself! It sounds really awesome! Also got a Vintage V1004 Fretless (another cheapie!) that is INSANE!!! It's the best fretless I've ever owned (including a Warwick Thumb Thru Neck!!).
 2.
Have you got Fender tattoo'd on your ring finger?? Great video, I enjoyed your previous soundclips of the richwood stuff - i'll buy one soon!
Sorry for a ridiculous delay in responding lol! It's my wife's name 'Janet' on the tattoo :-D Glad you enjoyed it - you'll not regret buying one. Just out of interest I'm just using the standard bridges on them now and they sound just the same tbh!
 3.
Interesting how the bits on it are worth double the basic instrument.
It it pretty funny :-)
 4. Hi Basschat peeps! I've done a quick demo video of my Richwood Basses as quite a lot of folks have asked what it is etc.! Hope this helps anyone who may be thinking of buying one of these cheapies :-) P.S. I don't have any connection with Richwood - I just LOVE 'em!!
 5.
Nice insight into this technique. Thanks
No problem - thank you!
 6.
Excellent stuff Scott! - I just watched them all - very clear / concise and, as you said your were aiming to do, demistyfied the basic technique. I hope you're going to keep going with these lessons - can't wait to see the intermediate/advanced series
Cheers Andy :-D
 7. And here's lesson 5 - Hammer-ons & Pull-offs... Lesson 5 - Hammer-ons & Pull-offs
 8.
A very brave post on this forum! I have seen so many 'I hate slap' posts over the last few months I have had a go and still can't do it (but will keep trying). Just don't tell anyone else I am trying to slap!
Hey I'm just being me :-) Keep trying - building up from a very slow tempo gradually is the key. Takes lots of practice but is a great expressive tool once you've got it. :-D
 9. Lesson 4 just uloaded into 1st post :-)
 10.
Scott I am new to bass guitar and am interested in learning a bit of "slap" in the future. You explained things very clearly and I found the lessons very informative. I am looking forward to trying out the techniques and pattern set out in your lessons. Thanks Gazzer
Thanks Gazzer - I'll have more videos online soon too :-)
 11.
Absolutely bloomin' marvelous!! You deserve a knighthood my friend!
Why thanks you very much kind Sir! :-)
 12.
That Richwood sounds nice! Videos are pretty good! Even "basic" slap is a very difficult thing to get across on a video, so I think you do a good job on that front. You maybe want to position your mic a bit closer to your mouth though, as there is quite a big volume difference between the bass and your voice - especially on the first video. What strings do you use on the Richwood BTW?
Thanks for the comments! The strings on the Richwood are Elites 35-95, but I normally use Rotosound Funkmaster 30-90 (not much difference).
 13. 2 more videos uploaded (in first post).
 14.
excellent well explained and easy to follow look forward to next one
Cheers :-)
 15.
1st lesson was great, look forward to checking out the rest! As a begginer of slap the "secret" was in the left hand slap as you said. You showing just how relatively slowly you can actually move your thumb was really encouraging! Looking forward to being shown some cool licks, well done and thanks!
No problem - thank YOU!
 16.
Cool looking guitar. I'm always surprised by how bass players in particular can be tempted by puns and wordplay
Bass players using puns? On what BASSIS do you draw this conclusion? ...sorry!
 17.
Hi Scott, Good luck with your videos. Watch out for the anti-slappists who don't seem to have found your thread yet I had a look and my feedback would be to be more concise and to start playing sooner. You are gonna loose peeps interest if there is too much talking - low attention spans and all that. Also a closer camera shot of the hands would be better. Cheers, Jerry
Thanks for the feedback Jerry! Lol at 'anti slappists' :-) Strange folk! Anyhow that's one of the barriers I want to break down with these vid's and help folks understand that slap is a way of playing a note - note a style or fashion accessory.
 18. Hi y'all! First post on here since the 'Richwood vs Warwick' bass poll lol! I've just completed the first of a series of short youtube videos introducing folk the the SLAP BASS technique which I thought I'd share here :-) I've never done anything like this before so I'd be really interested to know what you think of the way it's presented etc. Here we go... Lesson 1 - Overview of Slap Bass Lesson 2 - Slap Pattern 1 Lesson 3 - Getting a clear Slap Lesson 4 - Slap Pattern 2 Lesson 5 - Hammer-ons & Pull-offs Cheers, Scott.
 19. It's been quite a liberating thread really lol! I guess as long as this thread remains online it's a pretty cool place to point those who doubt or question the viability of both short scale and/or cheap basses.
 20.
Hi, Thanks for the offer...that's a lovely bass, always been a fan of Warwicks. Ideally I want cash for it unless someone's got a nice EUB to trade as that's what I'm shopping around for next! Thanks again though, good luck with selling it although I doubt it'll hang around long! Cheers, Chris
Now worries - cheers Chris!
 21. Would you consider a trade of some kind for a Warwick Streamer LX 4?
 22. Now intersested in swaps! Whatcha got?
 23. Sound clips added (see first post) :-)
 24. Have to admit I've really enjoyed this thread - it's really helped me have confidence ia bass I LOVE to play but was sort of worried what others might think. Stupid really, but I think most of us have that fear of playing cheapy stuff. For me this was also majorly about the short scale thing. My Richwood is a short (30") scale and there's always this idea that short scales are muddy sounding. Clearly people aren't hearing this in the Richwood to any degree. I think the main reason for the short scale downer is that most off the peg shorties lean towards a very thuddy sound by nature of pickup positioning etc. e.g. Gibson/Epiphone/Hofner. BTW the Dean Evo XM looks like it'd be a killer short scale with a preamp dropped in. I reckon passive it'd be pretty dark souning with those humbuckers.
 25. OK - thanks so much for the input everyone! It's really helped. There doesn't seem to be a clear 'winner' and most agree that both sound comparable. My fav is Bass 1 - for me it sounds more solid and more snappy/instant with the slap stuff. You won't believe this but Bass 1 is a £130 short scale Chinese built Richwood (see below) Bass 2 is my beautiful '97 Warwick Streamer LX (currently for sale) which now sell for £1400 upwards! Now to be fair, the Richwood has been modified with a Badass II, Dimarzio Pickups and an EMG 2- band eq. But still it seems unreal that the sound would be even close in quality to a bass costing 10 x as much! You see I really love this Richwood and use it as my main bass, but something was niggling at me saying 'it can't really sound any good, can it?'. I mainly love the bass for it's short scale as my fingers are short. In conclusion I'd say a lot of folk did warm to the more sophisticated sound of the Warwick, but the Richwood was percieved as a Jazz bass (that's the way I think of it) and a damn good one at that!
