voxpop Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 (edited) Hi Guys, I need your collective wisdom on a simple question.... I need a compressor that will give me 'old skool compression', something with a real squashy sound. It must sound rough with a little distortion...............must not be clean and modern sounding. Can you help..... Thanks. Edited August 24, 2010 by voxpop Quote
51m0n Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Pedal? A Joe Meek FloorQ Rack? A Joe Meek SixQ Its the same compressor, but different case (SixQ is a full preamp actually) Really squashy, absolutely ace mate! Quote
Rumple Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 I'd say a Boss CS-1 should do it, it really squashes the sound. I also have a knackered old Frontline compressor from the 80's that does a similar thing. Quote
Doddy Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 I've got an old ('84ish) Ibanez CS9 that's got a fair amount of squash and can get pretty gnarly if you want it too. Quote
Bassnut62 Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 (edited) reckon an old EHX White Finger might do the trick too and i think there's one for sale here under Effects For Sale or on TalkBass in US oops..it is a White Finger and it is here on BC in classifieds, but it's not an old one. I did try the big old one a few years back and I think I remember it being dirty as well as squishy. I remember getting a nice squishy grunt for Rappers Delight finger funk Edited August 24, 2010 by Bassnut62 Quote

Basszilla Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 modded cs-3? pluck super hard and you get that sort of sound Quote

I have a CS-1, CS-2, OS clone, EBS Multicomp and a Frontline compressor if you are ever passing Sarf London direction you are welcome to try them. 51m0n who makes the flourQ, I do like a compressor Quote
51m0n Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 FloorQ is made by Joe Meek Quote
synthetic Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 I come from an electronic music background but for gritty compression you could look at the Alesis 3630, Focusrite Compounder or for valve compression the TL Audio 5051. The Focusrite Penta isn't a bad compressor also. Quote
