vanwoogy
Hi, can anyone tell me what bass effects were used, particularly in the Thriller album? Or can you achieve any of these sounds from pedals on the current market? I'm looking for something at the higher end of the market, true bypass is V important, playing a Musicman Bongo so plenty active power to deal with any input level issues with synth pedals. Thanks who's bad?
OliverBlackman
A good way to get a similar sound to thriller without using pedals is plucking next to the bridge, behind the MM pickup. It gives a very thin and sharp tone. I play it like this with my EQ flat. I dont know what is used but id imagine its some sort of envelope filter. mxm
I seem to recall that the synth line on Thriller was a Moog Taurus - someone may correct me...
Doddy
All of those three tracks were played on synth.Although there is a bass guitar credit on 'Black or White' the predominant sound is the synth bass. As they were usually played by Greg Phillinganes and/or Michael Boddiker,I'm guessing that they were using a Moog synth of some sort, for the most part. synthetic
From what I gather either the Minimoog or Arp2600 was used on Thriller. The engineer had a box that was made for the processing so who knows how that changed the tone. There's a ton of Roland D50 and DX type sounds on a lot of michael jacksons stuff along with the majority of the 80's music. Delberthot
When I'm playing Billie Jean I have my Boss OC-2 on for the whole song - chorus during the verse and flanger in the chorus Not exactly accurate but it sounds the bollocks
