Ive just been looking at Matchless amps, purely because Im curious.

The demos are incredible. If I played more guitar, id want one. I want one anyway, but they are super expensive. Eg, more than Mesa.

Which brings me to my point. Even though we all spend a lot, and think our boutique/micro/all tube point to point/whichever cost a lot, those Matchless amps cost a LOT more. Fantastic gear though.

I was checking out this shop as well. This must be the best high end guitar shop in the country:

The prices of PRS guitars amaze me. A bit like Warwicks in a way....who actually buys them new? :)

Actually, that's really rather nice!
Quite conservative by Ritter standards, albeit a bit on the expensive side. I'd rather have that than a vintage White Falcon or somesuch...

Or the original Custom Shop Brian Setzer Gretsch that was around £17,000!

The other thing I've noticed is that when bass players start paying lots of cash for equipment they are either looking for technology and innovation or exotic wood. Guitarists seem to be looking for a substitute for that holy grail - the 59 Les Paul, or signature guitars in the hope of making them play like SRV or Rory Gallagher.

That's the one!

I bought a PRS Custom 22 there a while back. Amazing shop, it used to be a courthouse. The guitarist in my band bought a Mesa Boogie MkIV there and a couple of MusicMan guitars.

World guitars - how dull. Expensive but safe.

Potentially they could have some interesting stock looking at the makes they list, but ultimately they've stuck to the tried and trusted models and shapes.

For example ESP Japan make some fantastic looking guitars - just check out the various signature models (especially those for guitarists from the visual Kei bands), but all World Guitars have are some instruments that look like Les Pauls only not so elegant.

I'm bored.

It does actually look like the BEST music shop known to man, even though there are no basses.

matchless make bass amps to. Their amps really are the dogs bollocks though, i've done some clones that sound very nice.

Do you mean a 'Matchless Thunderchief' 200W head? Aren't they custom order only?
Would love to try one of those out...! Goodness knows what one would cost to get made.

I love guitar gear being a guitarist also, but I'm only really interested in Fenders, Ricks, Gibsons and that's about it. PRS I don't like at all, way too modern. Like someone said, the Warwick of guitars. Couple a good Strat with a Fender Twin or some Two Rock gear and I'd be set I reckon.

I'd suggest that when you want something REALLY special then prices between guitars and basses aren't so different, with the exception of a couple of real vintage models ('59 Les Paul anyone?).

However it's also my observation that guitarists are more sensitive to tone than bass players, and the search for the holy grail of tone is taken much more seriously. Guitarists will also often want a palette of tones, whereas many bass players will seemingly find the sweet spot for the band and stick with it for the gig.

The net result is that guitarists expect and get a huge range of tonal variations, and are often willing to pay for it. What makes it worse is that there are a few 'holy grail' instruments out there for the discerning, and that helps companies like PRS to shift boat-loads of carefully made and decorative guitars to those who equate looks, build quality and price with tone.

I've not found this. I've found guitarists are more sensitive to the tone afforded by having the right names written on things. I also tried out for a band that told me he could tell Joe Garcia had rubbish tone as he'd seen his pedal board, and wouldn't accept that I knew better just because I have actually heard Joe in action on a great many occasions (which he had never done, he'd just come into a practice to collect his combo), even did the old 'Imagine the tone that is sucked by all those pedals that aren't true bypass'. I've also handed guitars to guitarists so they could try them, and they still have to look at the headstock to see if it will sound right before they play it.

I understand, hence my comment about PRS.

Incidentally on the tone-suck thing, I won't ever buy any Cornish stuff because of the myths he wove about true bypass vs his own buffering system. Tone suck is as much about preamp input stage impedance as it is pedal design (at least in valve amps).

Great for playing in a recording session I'm sure.

Nothing has the bite of a good telecaster though.

I've been spoit in my band- our g'tard isn't that precious about finding his 'holy grail', just enough 'balls' to cut through the mix.

And I'd say bassists were fussier about tone, from my (admittedly short) experience. The tone, volume and correct EQ of a bass can make or break the whole sound of the band.

It's swings and roundabouts, entirely down to what you prefer and what works for the song. If i were to use a telecaster or a PRS style guitar it would depend entirely on what i was playing rather than which one i think is "better".
