Examples of good use of a Whammy bar on a bass??

Has anyone actually heard a good use of a bass with a whammy bar?

I saw an advert for a Warwick 5 string bass with a Kahler X-Trem.......

I'm rather interested to hear what this sounds like and if anyone has made it sound good.

Didn't Randy Coven have one on a pink 80's bass? I seem to remember he made good use of it, in much the same way as say, Dave Gilmour would on guitar. Very musical and expressive in a solo context.

Yup, he had a Barrington bass.

I've got (and am selling at the moment) a Carvin with a Kahler trem and it is a useful tool to have. They're not as sensitive as a guitar trem so you can play the bass and not worry about it having an effect on tone or tuning stability.

Norwood from Fishbone had one on a 6-string Thumb bass back in the early '90s. I don't know if it ever got recorded but he used it live a lot, generally for silliness, but I remember it was impressive. Then again he could've played pretty much anything and I would've been impressed, I was quite impressionable and he was immensely cool.

I guess there are extremes when it comes to 'playing tastefully' lol - I'd use a trem as I said above.. certainly in a solo passage with a bit of delay and light reverb for that lovely Gilmour effect in clean passages. Maybe compression to get the notes to ring out a bit, that'd be nice. a few pinch harmonics too - yeahh that'd be sweet. I'd not venture toward the scarey 80's hair-metal trem' debauchery that's for sure! ha ha!

Well, I did think of getting whammy bar myself a while back. I was into the whole 'hair metal' thing
back in the day. Thought better of it. I quite like that Rany Coven track. Sounds better on album.

As for the yosshinhiro video ....aaargggh ! Terrible. All the effects /delays he was using made it look like he was miming.

Victor Wooten had one on his original Fodera.... the one that looked a bit worn out.

I don't remember him using it though, and he doesn't have one on his signature bass.

You can tell an enormous amount about a player by their use of vibrato, and I can tell that geezer's an unmusical c***.
