Custom basses

How do you go around making your own bass?
i would like to end up with a jazz style bass with some tweaks and a different look.
Any advise on how to obtain body's (or making my own) necks and electronics, also paints or finishes. oh and cost.

Often it's best to put an ad up in the wanted section and see what fate turns up for you.

Essentials :
body
neck
pick ups
brigde
tuners

Sundries:
pick guard
string tree
strap buttons (straplocks are nice)
thumb rest ?

Once you've collected your parts you can then form an idea of what paint (or not) you'd like to go for to compliment it.
