thebeat Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Anybody else think that Joe Jacksons' Stepping out is about as sublime as pop gets? Quote
Rayman Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Yes I do, and I've not heard it for years. Quote
thebeat Posted September 4, 2010 Author Posted September 4, 2010 And don't get me started on Is she Really Going Out With Him? Quote
Mykesbass Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Wonderful stuff - but I do prefer the follow up album - title of which escapes me at the moment. Quote
Rayman Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 I like 'Body And Soul., and the live album just after. Quote
lonestar Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Body and Soul is a great album, apart from the cringey sleevenotes! I love the bass playing and tone on I'm the man. Quote
Kirky Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 I'm a big fan of the earlier stuff - what a great band they were! Stepping Out is good too. He is a very talented writer and performer but for me, the combination of him and the original band is unbeatable. Quote

Whilst Stepping Out is a top tune, "Look Sharp" and "I'm The Man" (the albums) are where it's at! Quote

Respect.
+1 Saw Joe Jackson play live in Birmingham a couple of times. He opened one of the gigs with Right or Wrong, just him on piano and Graham Maby on bass. Fantastic! Quote
essexbasscat Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Sorry, but for cool, Joe Jackson don't even get close to Roxy (IMO of course) Quote
BigRedX Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Stepping Out is one of my all-time favourite tracks. It's a pity the rest of the album is comparatively underwhelming. The bass and drums sound like a Roland Baseline and Drumatix, which is nicely understated and lets the important bits - the piano and vocals shine through. Quote

KevB Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Also worth checking out is his soundtrack to the movie Mike's Murder. Not conventioally poppy but some great tunes on it. Took me ages to find it but then I got a copy of a 3 disk compilation of JJ and the third disk had the whole soundtrack on it! Quote

wombatboter Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Joe Jackson has so many great tunes that it's hard to have favourites.. I consider him a musician and an artist.. I went to see the Body and Soul Tour years ago in Mechelen (Belgium) when I was in my early twenties and it still is one of the best concerts I have ever seen (with Sue Hadjoupoulos on percussion). That night I saw Maby playing "Stepping out" on his white Fender bass and he kept the tempo up without any problem. I used that song later on to practice octaves on my bass. It's not mentionned a lot but I also think Maby has a great voice (love him singing "Beat Crazy". Quote
