arthurhenry Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 I'm perfectly comfortable barring across the top two notes with my little finger, but I see a lot of players using both ring and little finger. How about you? Quote
Dood Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 It depends on what I have played before it and and where I need to go after! Quote

Colledge Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 (just had to pick up my bass and have a go to see what i did) i mostly just bar it with my ring finger but have built alot more strength in my little finger lately and have been using it more and more, wouldn't be surprised if i swayed that way in the future. Quote
allighatt0r Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 I'm a index, ring, little finger guy. Makes it easier to mute all individually as I don't tend to play power chords! Quote
TimR Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 One finger per fret. So barre with ring usually. Unless I'm playing the root with my second in which case its barre with little. I watched a band the other night the bass player didn't use his little finger all night. Quote
Doddy Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 I usually use my index finger for the root, ring finger for the fifth, little finger for the octave. Although I occasionally use my little finger for the fifth and octave but never barring-I play both notes with my fingertip. Obviously,I only do this if I'm playing the notes individually. Quote
Stingray5 Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Both. Depends on the piece I'm playing. If it's a chord, double-stop or finger-picking thing, I'd probably go index-ring-pinkie. Quote
Randy_Marsh Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 depends where on the fretboard really, ring or pinkie though Quote
Lozz196 Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Had to think abt that one! And it turns out, index for the root, middle finger for the fifth, ring finger for the octave. I blame it on playing in a punk band, I`m a non-conformist! Quote
cocco Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 I'm not sure. Pretty sure I use my ring and little though. One finger per string gives me more control Quote
JTUK Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Only use barring for raking and sweeps. If I would to play root,5th, octave, I would want to articulate every note the same, so that means index, ring and little. Quote
allighatt0r Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 I need to learn to use my little finger better, I find that the second knuckle from the tip locks out (like when you lock out your knees standing up). Anyone else get this? Perhaps I need to start another topic. Quote
Toasted Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 It depend where I'm coming from and what I'm playing next... also where I'm playing on the neck. Quote

BottomEndian Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010
It depend where I'm coming from and what I'm playing next... also where I'm playing on the neck.
+1 Also, I find it virtually impossible to do index, ring, little on a fretless (and play in tune ). There's just not enough room for all those man-fingers, so I'll almost always barre it when I'm without frets. Which is almost all of the time. Quote
tauzero Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 I'll go with Toasted and BottomEndian - context changes things, and even with lickle hands, fretless is easier with one finger (I think I tend to fret the string I'm playing rather than barre it though). However, on the Ashbory, I tend to use a violinny left-hand position quite a bit of the time, and that makes ring and little fingers the obvious choice. Quote
peted Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Don't know whether it's because I didn't really come to bass from being a guitar player but I don't naturally barr strings with a single finger across fretts. Playing a one off root-5th-Octave I tend to go index-middle-ring by default. Quote
acidbass Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010
Index-Ring-Pinkie here
+1! I think the two fingers I use the most actually are index and pinkie, which is why I can't understand people not using all four to fret! I'd be lost without the little one. Quote
hoiho Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 As others have said, it depends on where I've been, and where I'm going. Having tried it, it seems I'd use one finger per note -- index, ring, pinky -- although I might barre it on a fretted bass, but I don't ever double-stop on fretless by barring (presumably cos I'd never do it on the double bass). Quote
xilddx Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Again, depends, but usually a ring finger barre, Sometimes I use just the index. Play on the root with thhe index, slide up and barre 5th and octave with the index, it's quite expressive so it depends on the song. Quote
