Which Compressor.......again!

Recommended Posts

Ok there are already threads about compressors and BOD2's very informative explaination of how they work (which was brilliant btw). But I thought I'd ask which compressor you'd recommend for ease of use and a good quality sound. I've been thinking about an EBS Multicomp but I've not heard one 'in the flesh' as it were. I play mostly finger style funky blues with a bit of slap and double thumbing thrown in for a bit of zing!

Thanks :)

Aphex's 'Punch Factory' is meant to be pretty good. I haven't got one myself but they did get good reviews in magazines (IIRC). There's bound to be a few people on here (basschat) that do have one, and I'm sure they'll chime in.
It looks pretty simple to use with 2 rotary controls and an on/off footswitch.

Price wise, they're about £85 delivered from a UK supplier, or about £60 delivered from the US. Though you may get stung for some VAT/import duty if importing from the USA...

I've been thinking about one for a while...

I've got a couple but the EBS is my current fave. I've also got an old Boss LMB 2( more of a limiter and OK, but I find you have to set it carfeully of it can "pump" a bit) and a Digitech Bass Squeeze that sounds fab but eats batteries ( you'll be lucky to get through 25 mins of constant use) and can be noisy with a 9v adaptor.

Cheers,
Alun

Their best possible attribute is that you don't really notice it compressing. There is none of the breathing that you get with most other compressors. When you first use it you have to check that you've turned it on it's really that transparent in operation! The only reason I know it does do something is that the recording levels aren't all over the place when I do a take with it switched on. :)

It takes virtually any power supply AC or DC and has a balanced wet or dry XLR output as well as the usual jack. Highly recommended.
Edit: forgot to mention that if you have phantom power on the XLR connection it can use that for power.

Thanks for the input guys, I've just taken delivery of and EBS Multicomp from fleabay. I'm still tinkering at the moment but first impressions are 'wow' what a great pedal. It seems to give real solidity to the sound right accross all strings and adds real life (best word I can think of) to the overall tone, not that it was bad to begin with. I've also picked up a power supply today because I don't have too much faith in the lifespan of the average battery!

All the best Guys and a Happy New Year to all.......:)

I too am a demeter owner. Transparant i think is the terminolagy used

Any 9v pedal power supply will do the job for the EBS - I recommend this one:

It's very similar to the highly regarded Diago power supply but without the huge price tag. I have one on my board and it powers all of my pedals no problem.

Et voila :)

I have one of these too, and they are awesome, awesome compressors.

Not tried the Multicomp (but want one), but the Compulator is a fantastic piece of kit. I really, really want another one (sold mine a while back). I like the Barge Concepts RC1 as well.

Had an Aphex PF and it is good but not that indestructible. For the money I'd get a Boss CS3 and Monte Allums opto plus mod kit, just a transparent but (to my ears) more compression on tap.

I've been using an Ashdown dual band but got increasingly disappointed with it - I think the attack's set too fast (it's not adjustable) and removes the attack.

Instead I tried my TFPro P1 (formely Joe Meek) pre-amp. It's a half-rack width unit with a preamp, EQ and an optical compressor. I think it sounds brilliant compared with the Ashdown even though it's single band. You might find one secondhand somewhere but TFPro seemed to have stopped making the P1 now. It also makes a good recording preamp for vocals etc.

+1 for the EBS Multicomp. I found the Boss LMB-3 OK but the EBS much better. And less knobs. The EBS LED indicates the level of compression too. LMB-3's go for about 30-40 notes on fleabay though...

I've tried most of the pedal compressors out there and none of them do what I want - I still have my EBS Multicomp, Boss and Keeley compressors. I recently picked up a DBX160A (£270 new from DV247) and this does exactly what I want and then some and very easy to dial in (unlike most rack units I've used).

I´ve got the t.c.electronic Vintage Compressor and I´m really happy with it. It´s nearly identical to the T-Rex Comp Nova.

I have a EH Black finger, i have to admit i was a little worried because of the varied reports about noise and mine did suffer a little before i swapped out the valves for a pair of Telsas. Now its an amazing pedal, it takes a little time to work out the relationship between the controls but i love mine dearly now.

The Monte allums modded boss cs-3 is also VERY good especially for the price ( buy a used one and mod it yourself) when i have the time i plan to build another with even better components
