Horrible Basses

Recommended Posts

My pass-the-bucket list of shame:
- That stupid Warwick Reverso abomination.
- Alembic Dragon's Wing.
- Big AL
- Bongo
- Everything made by these people and these people.
- Much of BC Rich's output.
- Sparkly Italias etc.

Rich (refusing to 'justify' my 'coffee table' bass to anyone) :)
- Big AL
- Bongo
I was waiting for someone to mention these two!

Personally, when I first saw the Bongo pictures when it was released, I thought 'what is going on?!'.

Now, Ive warmed to it. Purely because its very well designed.

The Big Al....well Im weird because I instantly took a liking to it, and thats weird for a tradtionalist like me.

Agreed. The top one looks like someone's been sick over it. :)

Actually, most Ritters are pretty suspect.
I absolutely hate the Big Al in sunburst finish, but in a metallic solid colour I really like it.... odd :)

I've decided I don't like Ritters either. In fact there seem to be quite a lot of ugly basses coming out of Germany at the moment, who puts a lion on their bass?

I'm amazed it hasn't been mentioned already but the Flea bass hits near the top of my list. Other than the very square design, the colours are just too hideous to contemplate.

I'm also not a very big fan at all of symmetrical basses, and the pariticular offenders I can think of are any of Stanley Clarke's or Mark King's basses. In this month's BGM there's a photo of SC in front a load of his Alembic basses, and quite frankly they are hideous - particularly the flying V! I think what really turns me off are the stupid tails that these basses have - either pointy out tails or just where somebody has taken a Batman-size bite out of the bass.

I'll also +1 to T-Birds, anything from Burns, and singlecuts.

+1. That is absolutely revolting. It looks like two pointy paddles have been glued together and then covered in expensive top laminates. How can SC look at that and not think euuurrrgghhh!

In fairness, some of those 'Alembics' are actually the Löwenherz things I posted the link to. Although his actual 'Bics aren't terribly pretty either.

Ugh.

To me, this looks like a double-neck with a 6-string and a 6-string. The bridges are clearly different, and the fboards are made from different woods, but other than that, I can't see what distinguishes the two halves. They both appear to be fretted. Anyone know?

S.P.

One has Classic P Bass Thump, the other has Classic Jazz Bass Growl.

Oh blige, I forgot that one. A classic case of a fabulous prototype transforming into a complete gumby of a production model.
How did they make such an ugly bass, when the guitar it's shaped after is so pretty?

The difference between the necks is that one neck is too high up to play comfortably, the other one is too low to reach properly.

Stan's 'bic Flying V looks like it's suffering from a severe case of the mumps. Utterly vile; hard to believe someone wasted good wood on it, or that someone with eyes would buy it.
