bubinga5
I dont care for loads of technique..i can play it but i dont feel i want to... i do love good note choices and feel.... i do love some of the amazing things that people do on bass but...my question is.....do you prefer alota feel for someone who just blows you away technically ....or what would you prefer, a total groove from someone who ( i feel ) is playing in the groove..( keep in mind im talking about these vids) and doing the finger style thing??? my judgment is in my avatar.. i cant get away from the fact that Meshell's groove is so much better...but different.....maybe i just said it? Tamas Barabas...FCleff 5 string http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nMrTj6o_6Q Meshell Ndegocello..Sonic Tonic.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VeqnL9IO-0 im always interested in the opinions from you guy/girls on BC so i would like your opinion, on the difference between the two styles.... Bloodaxe
30 secs (if that) for Tomas, more than three times that for Meshell. Neither are really my style tbh. I go for groove every time (with a couple of exceptions), but it's nice when an otherwise "straight" player bowls you a Doosra. Pete. Stingray5
For me, it has to be the Meshell track. I love that finger-funk groove she's laying down. Rocco rules, too! Nothing wrong with the Tamas Barabas track but I started to get a little bored with the repetitiveness. My foot was definitely tapping more to the Meshell track. Pete Academy
Both these clips are great. However, I think Meshell is unbeatable when it comes to groove. She plays everything from the heart.
Mykesbass
Not sure if they are the right things to compare as the two players are trying to (edit, are) achieving different things. I don't think in the Tamas clip he is trying to groove as such.
tomika
Hi Guys Auhhh… No, please! Meshell of course! 8-) (I just made for Fclef a little sound sample… nothing else) Cheers! Tamas
skej21
The Meshell track every time. I don't want to be made to listen to the bass. I want to feel the groove and then realise it's BECAUSE of the bass! The other track is technically very good but musically boring IMO (which to be fair, does show off the instrument very well so is the best thing for a product demonstration!). Myke
In my opinion I think the second video grooves more. Some of it is bass, obviously but I feel with these songs, the drums is what makes them different and affects the groove a lot!
louisthebass
Meshell by a country mile....
Japhet
Clips are chalk and cheese. Tamas presumably demonstrating an instrument and Meshell playing a gig. Don't think many manufacturers would be happy if their instrument demo was a repetitive groove or that a live performance would be enhanced by the bass player emptying his trick bag repeatedly. FuNkShUi
I utterly respect the technical skill of Tamas. Very lucky to have talented players like this in our forum. Hi Tamas!! But its as he said, he was doing it as a demo for the bass company. Meshell is playing a song in a gig. Both very talented, both tasked with very different things in their respective videos. I think most bass players would opt for groove when it comes to playing in a song
namefail
Echoing statements of others here perhaps but to my ears the 1st clip has the guy riffin' and in the 2nd we have a wonderful example of less being more. Cheers to the OP, Meshell's a very sweet player and less is always more, mostly
Bilbo
It's all only part of the equation. A great groove won't make a s*** song great and a lot of the best music doesn't 'groove' in any commonly agreed sense of the word. To my mind, a great groove can be like polishing a turd. It doesn't make a song any less naff if it has a great groove. I always find it astonisihing that anyone rates that 'Good Times' thing by Chic. Great groove, I acknowledge, but the actual song is icky beyond belief
Green Door I hope Meshell for me also. Although Jaco got me interested in picking up a bass in the 1970's I always though Weather Report were at their best with Alphonso Johnson before him and Victor Bailey after him. Both masters of groove.
xilddx
Neither for me. I don't think either are grooving hard. I find the timing issues and the horrible bass tone in the Meshell vid too much to bear. Love Tamas' tone but the groove is not syncopated and I found it boring, but as he said it's just a sound clip. I know this is a well known vid, but if you want a wonderful thrilling groove and thrilling playing .. But it's also a nice tune with rich harmony, both the vids in the OP have neither. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pATcvr3zAhg

THAT MAN KNOWS HIS THEORY.!!! good call Nige. Edited March 8, 2014 by bubinga5
