Here are a few examples; King - Love and Pride Ian Dury & the Blockheads - Rythym Stick Nick Heywood - Take That Situation (Bet you'll have to look that one up!) Moloko - Sing it Back (To prove I'm not a total eighties throwback - Have a listen)
Man, I'm an 80's anorak and even I can't remember that Nick Heywood song...lol...."Blue Hat For A Blue Day" however...... Paul Cooke Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Canned Heat - On The Road Again... so simple, yet anything else would blow the mood, that of mile after mile of endless two-lane black-top through desert... Quote

And surprise surprise, it's that Palladino chap again Speaking of whom: 'Music For Chameleons' and 'We Take Mystery (To Bed)', Pino-powered Gary Numan tunes. Also: 'State Of Mind', by Fish. Sublime bass by the godlike John Giblin. Quote

John Giblin - didn't he play for Simple minds after Derek Forbes left? (Once upon a time album etc?) Someone mentioned 'Glittering Prize' earlier. What a bassline but the recording seems to be slightly off concert pitch so I can't have a play-a-long LOL Cheers - I'll check out those Numan tunes Quote
nick Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 (edited) Couple of eighties classics. & one that deserves to be: Alexander O'Neal : Criticize http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CySYwZNH65I Smooth! Madonna : Like a Prayer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icrUkBaSefs Nice Octave pedal work-out around 4 minutes in. thebassmandave Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 OK. I sort of stumbled on it by accident when looking at tv shows online. Was really impressed with note choices in bassline - really makes the song IMHO. I know it's cheesy ........ but I really like the bassline It's FAME by Irene Cara  Quote
nick Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 (edited) 'Wishing Well' - Black Sabbath Not a rocker myself, but love most of Geezers basslines. Not only the bass, but the whole rythmn section sounds like it's playing for it's life on this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJWscmB1CJ0 p.s. sticker Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 Blame it on the Boogie - The Jacksons ... Awesome Bass riffage ! Quote
Jono Bolton Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 Pump It Up - Elvis Costello and the Attractions Quote
Lfalex v1.1 Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 Definitely agreeing with; Flame of the West - Big Country (Tony Butler) Mayor of Simpleton - XtC (Colin Moulding) This must be love - Phil Collins (Alphonso Johnson) Don't Give Up - Peter Gabriel (Was it that Levin guy again??!) You can call me Al - Paul Simon (Bikithi Kumalo) 5 of my personal favourites! And I'll add... Fools in love - Joe Jackson (Graham Maby) Got the time - Joe Jackson (Graham Maby) Anthrax covered it, too, but watch Frank Bello run and hide when it comes to that solo! Babooshka - Kate Bush (John Giblin) Making a mundane song phenomenal. Except non-bassists don't get it. Philestines! Quote
nottswarwick Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 so, in essence, without basslines a hell of a lot of tunes would not be the songs they are. so, bass rules.....but we all know our power to shape harmony, feel, groove etc etc love it - always sing the bass lines....well, i do anyway lol cheers from the pub chris Quote
yanto Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 Psychokiller-Talking Heads Love Song-Simple Minds, still sounds modern although at least 25 years old Quote
Buzz Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 On the mention of 80's, I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but: Kajagoogoo - Too shy. Quote
jakenewmanbass Posted May 10, 2008 Author Posted May 10, 2008 Well folks I started this thread back in December really glad to see it's still going strong, the tune that spurred me to starting it was Never die young by James Taylor with Lee Sklar on bass, I've just been listening to a later, live version on youtube where I have to say that the bass (this time Jimmy Johnson) is about as good as it gets, musicality, strength, devastating time, taste, poise, placement, interest... all things that just do it for me in the biggest way. So here it is, I hope some of you enjoy it as much as I do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXRUasAWKCw Jake Quote
Starvolt Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Basically all Muse songs, especially Hysteria and Starlight Atomic - Blondie Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen ( A good use of walking bass) Helicopter - Bloc Party Jumpin' Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones Golden Brown - The Stranglers, which I suspect is Double Bass rather than guitar. Brother Jones Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 (edited) Can't believe no one's mentioned Doug Wimbish's killer 'White Lines' riff.... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=yGFn-Q_FN44 Lots of Stevie Wonder lines by Nathan Watts, but especially 'Do I Do' and 'I Wish' - both great fun to play and the line is the song. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=c6f6BOKXXxg&...feature=related 'Hair' by Graham Central Station. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6YO4rC3ZB7g Robbie Shakespeare's line from Grace Jones' 'Pull up to the Bumper', as well as her lesser known version of 'Nipple to the Bottle'. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Lzk11I_Ikfg http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=v7dN2xVPeTU&...feature=related Oh, and 'Heaven' by Talking Heads. And their version of 'Take me to the River'. Go Tina! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=19fOw17b58s http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=25E0ACkA6uo&...feature=related That's enough for now... I think somone asked earlier who played on 'You can Call me Al'. Don't know if anyone's replied , but it was a South African named Baghiti Kumalo. The second half of that famous fill is (apparently) just the first half recorded backwards... Or, going by the video, it's Paul Simon playing a Precision. Edited May 12, 2008 by Brother Jones Quote
