Got a singer who likes G, so i need to get me a low D...

And drop tuning gives me nightmares.[/quote]

Ibanez and Cort make fretless fivers priced around £500. Not tried them myself

Wooo!

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. They'll get the search started. Funny how you don't even notice stuff outside your normal zone. Was never really aware of any of these.

The Mazeti fretless 5-string is down at the cheap end financially but it's a pretty respectable instrument. There's one on ebay at the moment, in fact.

Have you considered down-stringing a 4 string to BEAD?

Usually all that's needed are the nut-slots widening just a touch.

I played both fretted & fretless 4s tuned BEAD for a year in a Blues band.

They went back to standard tuning no probs too.

Check out the Ibanez GWB35 if you want brand new.

Although that Alembic Epic is sweet. It's always worth looking at the secondhand market

Thanks for the suggestions. Got my Gas rumbling nicely.

Can't say I want to detune, cos i do doodle a bit up the G string when nobody's looking (oo-er).

@ tauzero, couldn't find the Mazeti on eBay, but i'll keep an eye out.

Graft? Hmmm. I'll take a look. Not a big fan of single cuts, but they look a lot of bass for the money.
