algmusic
What has to be considered is that there are over 11000 members on this forum, policing them would be impossible without other users reporting them. Someone could easily have a NSFW avatar and not the first post it's on is the one that you look at with the boss nosing in. I agree that avatars should be policed, but I don't see how would be feasible either. I don't think at the moment it is a great problem, the worst i've seen is something i'd see no worse than on the front on FHM, provocative but not really in the boundaries of NSFW.
An FHM wallpaper on an office computer, would get most people in trouble at work. Policing in terms of others reporting images could work. You could ask them not to post certain images and other BCers can report them and the moderators make the call. Machines
In the same light surfing a website that isn't work related could get someone into trouble. I don't think the website can take responsibility for this and it is down to the member whether this will cause an issue for them. The forum already has a solution with the lofiversion and posts can be made by clicking the link at the top of the lofiversion and resizing your window to hide any possible dodgy images (this has worked for me for 2+ years). I believe the best solution is for any obvious NSFW images to be reported to a moderator. By that I mean under the definition of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Not_safe_for_work (this would be dealt with on a case-by-case basis as it is hard to define a proper ruleset). Ultimately though, the forum is not responsible for 'safe browsing' at work.

That article didn't really define it or give examples. It might seem like I'm being facetious but I'm just trying to establish the boundaries. Machines
That's the point - it's not possible to define. The above link gives a rough approximation, hence each image is judged on it's own merits. I will try and develop some examples of what isn't allowed, the research i'm sure will be laborious and uninteresting, but that's the price I pay for being a mod . JimBobTTD
For me, poor taste but acceptable is the kind of picture my grandmother would tut at (but show me - she's like that). Unacceptable is the kind of picture that belongs in a bongo mag and would make my lovely grandmother unhappy to see. Ideally, a forum would take care of itself. I agree that some pictures are in poor taste, but I also agree that the forum should not change avatar policy so some folks can browse at work. Pete Academy
I thought I'd have a picture of a woman who is considered the most attractive on the planet and is also a brilliant actress. Would any boss disagree with that?

SteveO
I think this is being taken too far. You are at work, OK you have a problem with the possibility of co-workers seeing NSFW images, I understand that, but a safe for work alternative has already been given. Do we really want to moderate this forum to make the whole site safe for work? I was once pulled by the IT bods because I was browsing the 'Gear Porn' and this obviously triggered all sorts of alarm bells all the time. I wish it had a nicer name to stop it being a problem, but it is not fair to ask that it should be changed just to protect me from doing something that I shouldn't have been doing in the first place. I vote for leaving the site it as is. There is a 'lofi' solution to your problem If you don't want to use it then you must accept the consequences. ahpook
although i'm not a fan of nsfw-ish avatars, i do have to concur that there it's almost impossible to work any restrictions, and there is an alternative if you want to surf at work. Why should the forum have to bare the responsibility of policing avatars to protect individuals from something that perhaps they shouldn't be doing in the first place. Especially when alternatives are already available.

Personally I dont think it matters what the contect of the avatar is as its pretty obvious to anyone who looks over my shoulder that I'm looking at a website which is not work related. The ones which I find most annoying are the flashy animated ones as they attract more attention to the fact that I'm not working. My solution is to reduce the size of the window so that none of the avatars are showing , then I open a spreadsheet alongside it and reduce that so the screen is 50 % spreadsheet and 50% basschat! Dubs
Some replies have missed the point a bit, but thanks for the input anyway. I wasn't trying to start an argument or provoke emotive responses, just a discussion about what people consider to be appropriate or inappropriate for a music forum. I get the impression that the majority are cool with it though? I know some people find it difficult to grasp, but my job does involve waiting around for processes to finish, during which time it's considered acceptable to take a break, read a book/paper or just browse the net - my boss and I even send each other links to stuff. When you're paying me you can tell me not to browse Bass Chat whilst at work, otherwise I can't see how the opinion that I shouldn't browse the internet at work anyway is at all relivant. The content I browse, however, may be becoming inappropriate...
