Mikeg Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 All in the title. Whats your personal favourite pickups? Quote
AndyTravis Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Played a Windmill Spitfire once in MM bridge, P neck - worked really well. P/J seems to cover most things though. What is it you're doing; having a bass made? Depends on your musical style, MM/MM is a big old sound, had a Bongo for a good few years, still wish i'd not sold it. Trav Quote
Chris2112 Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Two Humbuckers does the trick for me. As long as there is something at the bridge to give the bass some cut and some honk then I'm happy! Quote

Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Precision in the traditional place with a passive tone/volume. Quote
Chris2112 Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 I always thought the configuration on some Warrior basses was pretty good. A big MM style humbucker with a jazz bar at the bridge beneath it. As a Warrior owner once said to me "just think, when do you ever solo the neck pickup on a jazz bass?". Made perfect sense to me and I'm surprised more people don't use this configuration! Quote
Tait Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Precision pickup in the middle, MM in the bridge position for me! Ok, technically not entirely solo'd, as I'll put a little of the bridge pickup in, but mostly neck pickup. Quote
Ian Savage Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 For out-and-out rock, passive P or MM; for anything needing a bit more versatility, P/J. Quote
Cat Burrito Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010
Precision in the traditional place with a passive tone/volume.
Me too. Quote
AttitudeCastle Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 If its got two pickups, and one of them is a neck humbucker, its fine by me! Though i'd rather not one of those Gibson like ones! Either Neck Hum + P pickup (yes like the Sheehan!) or two humbuckers/ soap bars depends on the bass really, though usually the chunky Musiman ones Quote
LawrenceH Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010
"just think, when do you ever solo the neck pickup on a jazz bass?".
Funnily enough, that's one of my favourite tones but only on more 'substantial'-feeling jazzes. The neck pup on a chunky jazz bass like my ash CIJ 75 is firkin' lush! Quote
mcnach Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 single MM by the bridge... or a twin J-bass type... mostly to use the bridge alone, and sometimes both together. Quote
ahpook Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 jazz i think - i could get away without a bridge one, so maybe j/mm Quote
spinynorman Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Passive P. That way no difficult decisions are required. Just plug in and play. Quote
thodrik Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Its always the one I don't have. At the moment Jazz/Musicman or P/MM configuration. Or MM/MM! Quote
BigRedX Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 4 Gus tubes wired as two humbuckers with coil taps. Quote
E sharp Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 MM . Sweet spot position either the same as MM or slightly forward , but not back . Don't need 2 pick ups . Just move your right hand forward or back when plucking . Most of the sounds can be had out of one PU (IMO) . Quote
Lozz196 Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010
Precision in the traditional place with a passive tone/volume.
Gets my vote as well. Quote
Jamesemt Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 Precision in the middle, active 2 band EQ for me Quote
