umph
not really it's a squire it doesn't even have p-bass style pick ups either how weak Edited December 28, 2007 by umph
SJA
the Squier P5 plays great and is promising acoustically, but plugged in the B string output is weak- because the pickups aren't wide enough to cope with the wide spread of the strings. an owner's testimony here- http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=8995 on Talkbass everyone seems to be raving about the new Squier active Jazz 5 though. stewblack
Cheers for the helpful responses. I know people are saying how good the squire basses are at the mo - just wasn't sure which ones. A little bit more googling and I see this is a very competitive price but not crazy cheap! Jono Bolton
That doesn't seem bad at all. £60 off the rrp, free delivery, stand and strings (although at £8 a set they'll not be fantastic), and Squier stuff's pretty decent, I have a Squier tele and strat and they're both excellent, the neck on my strat's better than some Fenders I've tried. I'd probably replace the pickups on it though, the pickups on my strat were quite weak, but the tele isn't bad at all. You get a choice of colours too, sunburst looks good with the tortoise shell scratchplate.
Machines
Average price I reckon. You'd be much better off with the Deluxe Jazz V though.
rockinrayduke
I had one of those a few years back and yes, I found the B output very weak and found also that 4 string pickups were used instead of 5. Sold it to a friend of mine who installed some 5 string Lace Sensors and still plays it a lot. It played great just sounded anemic.
Hit&Run
they've got the 5 string jazz new for £209.99 plus shipping here
Tait
yeh, the active jazz seems a much better buy.
tauzero
The Squier Special 5 I bought for £100 or so was a pretty good buy (neck was a bit chunky for me and so I sold it when I got the Tsai). I think it's the same model (metallic black, not sunburst): Nothing outstandingly good or bad, just grey porridge.
