fryer
Hi, I have recently bought a Hohner the Jack bass, with EMG select pick ups. It has an active / passive switch. I thought active pups were different to passive ones ? So how does this work ? Any suggestions for improving these ems's, as I have heard that they are not that good. But I still want to keep the choice of active / passive. Richard
Ou7shined
Selects are passive. It's just switching from active mode to passive mode ie. placing the pre-amp in and out of the circuit. I had some Hohner "the Jack" bass Jazz pups in a custom 5 build once and although obviously not top-end thought that they were great pups - very loud too. Don't believe the anti-hype. Maybe you could look at a different pre-amp.

I've had both a Hohner Jack and Hohner B Bass in the past, both with Selects on - I thought they were great too
MoonBassAlpha
I couldn't agree more, there's nothing wrong with Selects at all, and the humbuckers are pretty high output too.
TheGreek
I've got a set of EMG Selects in a Steinberger zx2 which I'm not happy with - I feel the volume output is pretty poor - if somebody can tell me how to get the best out of them...
