It's just the nut to bridge distance, i.e. the speaking length of the string. (Shorter scales have less tension but may sacrifice the fundamental. Opposite for long scale lengths but you sacrifice playability. Note a Dingwall attempts to do it all on the one fretboard. Not played one so I'm not sure how it works out....) visog
