longtimefred
Yo yo! Recently I have really been tempted by a change of bass from my trusty ray. I have used this for the last 6 years but recently I have found myself wanting a more versatile bass and also wanting to drop down to a 4 string. I love the fenders and have owned a jazz bass before and loved it's tone. The p deluxe seems to tick all the boxes for me with the range of sounds it can do. I love the model with the humbucker at the bridge. I ain't been able to play one because they are impossible to find!! What I want to do is find someone who has one that wants a trade for mine as I have no cash. Does anyone have any experience with these basses? Do you think it's a clever move? Just some advice would be appreciated.
Musicman20
I owned a 2001/2 ish American Fender Precision Deluxe. At the same time I had a Ray or two. That humbucker CANNOT get anyhwere near the EBMM tone. Not one bit. In fact, seeing a P bass with more than just the normal controls and pickups just didnt work. Far too much going on and the pre-amp...well... Im in the camp of P bass = split coil, vol, tone, passive. Thats it. My Deluxe was far too heavy, and I really didnt use it. I personally wouldnt change....but thats IMO. I love Stringray 5s.
longtimefred
Don't get me wrong, I do love my ray, I just think I want to get more than just ray sound out of it at the moment. Might have some tweaks around with eq n stuff.
Delberthot
how about selling it and getting a Stingray HH or HS?

The S gives you some AMAZING P bass tones/J neck pup tones. Combine it with other pups and BOOM!
longtimefred
I like the sound of the hs! Never had a go of one of them. Will have a look into it. What's the going rate for a second hand one?

The HS allows single coil at bridge, like a normal Ray 5, you lose the series option (which is now different anyway on 2008 onwards single Rays) and you gain the S at the neck and a load of other great positions. I was actually impressed by how different each one is. They are expensive to buy new, but I didnt pay the price below which seems to be the norm and I also got the upgraded Tort guard. Ill get pics up in the Gear Porn soon...it is a beautiful white. Musicman20
Oh and search Stingray 5 HS on youtube. There are two demos by the same guy of each position. Thats what sold it for me.

longtimefred
Another option I could Persue is adding the j pickup into my own bass rather than selling it. I'm not Arsed about losing value as if I can do what I want it to, i don't think I would ever sell it.

I'm just attracted to them as they are the nearest production basses to my Pingray, which I already know is the tits and sounds a bit like what you were describing earlier ie. a Stingray but with a bit more range. You could put your 'ray up for a trade with a 'berg and see what happens.
longtimefred
Yeah I think I shall do that. Those jm5's are just amazing.
WHUFC BASS
If its metal you play and want an EBMM tone with a bit more on top, I reckon you should go for one of these: Or the John Moyer with Rockfield pre-amp which sounds even more EBMM. Absolutely massive hot output on this with the pre cranked right up. Great tone too: This is the 5 string, they do a 4 string too.
Vibrating G String
[quote name='longtimefred' post='973718' date='Oct 1 2010, 03:23 AM']Another option I could Persue is adding the j pickup into my own bass rather than selling it. If you're not worried about the value loss and think you'll play it go for it.

Prime_BASS
Take a look at the Enfield bass. It looks like HH but the pickups are split horizontal and vertical. So you can have HH, JJ, PP, HJ, HP, JH, PH, JP, PJ. I think it's also activive/passive aswell. Very versatile however very very expensive and if you do buy it you are only likely to use 1 or 2 of the available options. So it's for the rich and indecisive. BluRay
Havent tried HS stingray, but the HH set on middle coils sounds ace IMO. Still very definately a ray, but something of a P sound in there too.
