megallica Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 If I tune my 5 string EADGC will it put any extra tension on the neck? Quote
michael-faces Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 The bass would be able to handle the tension, but wouldn't you need to get a new nut? Otherwise the E string would be loose in the B string space. Also, you might have to adjust the truss rod after changing it. One of my friends has a a six string bass tuned to guitar tuning and it works really well. Quote
markstuk Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Or you could restring it with the correct weight strings - unless you like very tight strings... This would be the implied issue with the previous post.. Quote
megallica Posted October 4, 2010 Author Posted October 4, 2010 I need a new nut for this bass anyway - just bought it and fancied defretting it and tuning it to EADGC. Thanks for the helpful advice Quote
Faithless Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 If you're after a defretted (and fret-markered) 5string tuned E-C, that's what I got for ya http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=94843 cheap as chips, good for trying fretless out - it's not for everyone tastes.. easy Faith Quote
Protium Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 You can't tune a low B 5 string set up to EADGC, you will need to get a set with a high C (usually .020 to .030 gauge) instead. IIRC the high C is slightly tighter than the low B, so you may need a little tweak on the the set up. Quote

I was going to buy a four string set and then an indiviual C or light guage G? Quote
Faithless Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Elixir sells individual B and C strings, although they're not the cheapest. There are some manufacturers in UK that offer custom strings. Newtone maybe? Quote
