philw Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 One of my favourite work-avoidence, GAS inducing, web sites for occasional browsing is thelowend.net. I spotted this the other day: www.thelowend.net/gallery/viewtopic.php?t=5084 and thought such an extraordinary instrument deserved a basschat audience. Enjoy (but make sure your credit card is well hidden). Phil Quote
Stacker Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Wow. Are these basses for sale, do you know? Or is that just a gear porn page? Quote

Meenie Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 It looks like something you'd find in a park with kids running in and out of it, all its lacking is a slide, a bit of cargo net and some wood chippings underneath it! Quote
purpleblob Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 That's a really unique look, 28 fret markers - some neck as well. Really lovely looking bass. Quote
bh2 Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Soz... me no likey... looks like a coffee table with a neck. Quote

BottomEndian Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Really interesting design! I'd love to hear how it sounds. Nice to see someone taking instrument design somewhere different.* The mac ebony bridge is a nice touch too. * This is the point where someone usually chimes in to say that "it's nothing new; Pierre van Smosmoden was doing stuff like this in the 1760s". Well, it's new to me. Quote
Clarky Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Sorry, add me to the 'its a m*nger' camp. Especially don't like the side carving/scalloping on the body. Looks like a Walls Viennetta Quote

It's kind of like the louvres on the air vents in a car. Or like a Venetian blind. Or something. Quote

7string Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 That's a wonderful instrument. No price though. Remember the saying: If you have to ask how much, then you can;t afford it. Quote
Bassassin Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Ghastly. Another "Snoopy with a plank rammed down his throat" bass. I suppose the construction method's interesting - I've never seen anything like that before, but combined with the overall aesthetic (for want of a better word) it all conspires to make one of the ugliest basses I think I've seen so far. It probably makes an interesting sound when the wind blows through it, though. Jon. Quote
philw Posted October 6, 2010 Author Posted October 6, 2010 I suspected this was going to be a bit of a Marmite™ bass, that's kind of why I posted it. I'm going to sit on the fence. I admire the ingenuity of the construction (clearly the work of a deranged mind that's outrageously good with numerous little bits of wood), and I'd love a go on it, but I don't really see the point – there's many much easier ways of making a chambered/semi-solid bass. Phil PS. The rest of thelowend.net is worth a look. Lots of very nice, and a few very odd, instruments. Quote
xilddx Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Thing is, it is just downright ugly, no aesthetic beauty at all. I love strange looking basses, but only if they are gorgeous to behold, like Spalt Basses. Quote
waynepunkdude Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 I'd rather look at a car crash, awful looking thing. Quote
