Bilbo Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 I have a dilemma you can all help me with. I want to form a tribute band to make loads of money and stay in hotels in Dubai but I can't afford any new gear so the question is, which bands have a bass player who uses a Wal fretless and has a big enough following to guarantee loads of gigs. I tried a Brand X tribute but it went nowhere. PS I look like Rolf Harris Quote
Earbrass Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 (edited) Ditch the bass, and take up the didge and wobble-board? Edited October 5, 2010 by Earbrass Quote
markstuk Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Mick Karn used to play a WAL fretless I believe.. So are there any Japan tribute acts? And you get to wear make-up as well which should alleaviate the Rolf lookalike issue .... Quote
Low End Bee Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Can't be too difficult to make the Wal sound like the digeridoo. Two little boys...... Quote

Dave Vader Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 You've got a DB, Get a quiff, and go do the Stray Cat Strut on the ROckablilly scene.... :brow: Quote
P-T-P Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Derek Forbes from Simple Minds used a fretless Wal no? Or was that with Propoganda Quote
maxrossell Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Pearl Jam. Ament used a fretless Wal fairly extensively I think. Although if you want to do Jeremy you'll also need a 12-string bass. Quote
Stingray5 Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Add a low B string and some frets, turn the bass upside down, don a mop-top wig and bingo -- instant Macca! Quote
3V17C Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 i think with starting any tribute band its all got to revolve around the singer and who he/she looks/sounds like then go from there. peace c Quote

You are assuming that the general public are actually aware of what a bass player does, let alone notice that there is one in a band and even notice you. You need to remember the golden rule, the general public don't listen or even know what a bass player is or does. So, don't worry about the Wal, play what you like as nobody in the crowd will even notice you Quote

KevB Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Have you considered doing jazz reworkings of rock and pop standards? Hayseed Dixie made a good living off hillbilly tributes of well known classics, it would give you some creative input doing the arrangements. I know there have been recorded swing versions of rock stuff by the likes of Paul Anka and Pat Boone but you don't see it in pubs and clubs, might be a niche to exploit? Quote

lowdown Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 (edited) This should fit the bill...Wal fretless on the vid. You will need leather trousers though. And coat your beard with cheese, the girls love a rarebit of Welsh. And for the Dubai gig. Good luck Garry Edited October 7, 2010 by lowdown Quote
