Bero Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Have Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass, never really happy with sound, neck + feel all excellent, has anyone ever changed pick ups and what have they used. Have a Audere pre amp in it, might put it back to passive and change pick ups Any pick up suggestions Quote
ezbass Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 I once fitted DiMarzio Ultra Jazzes to a USA J Bass, very nice p/ups and humbucking too, vintage with a bit of edge to them to my ears. I later added an East J Retro. Quote

The pickups in the Geddy are USA vintage. I changed the neck to a thicker rosewood one and it changed the sound completely and gave it much more bottom end. The conclusion I came to is that a lot of the sound of the Geddy Lee bass comes from the very thin maple neck. I think that any other pickup you swop the stock pickups with will suffer from the same lack of bass. But if you really want to change them.....these sound groovy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3-uPgqcHuo Quote
Bero Posted October 6, 2010 Author Posted October 6, 2010 Wow, where can i get them, they sound class Quote
LawrenceH Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 I had what I'd assume are those same pickups in a Jap 75RI and they were very meh. I'm a bit suspicious of the Japanese 'US' pickups. I'd say it's worth swapping them out Quote

cocco Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 I had the jap US pickups in my jazz. They were sh*te! Really thin and quiet. So I got a set of sheds custom wound which are mega hot. I'm now thinking something with more bass response would be better, maybe even tempt me away from my P. Quote

tom1946 Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 I had a new Glee once and the output was very poor and quiet. I resoldered the earths on the pots and I couldn't believe the difference, quite staggering. Quote
EUROSTEVE Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 (edited) i stuck Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pups in my American STD, real nice pick ups enhanceing the lows and highs of the tonal quality Edited October 9, 2010 by EUROSTEVE Quote
