matt-bass-sparkes Posted October 7, 2010 Share Posted October 7, 2010 Hi, I acquired a '51 re-issue P-bass (Japanese Fender) a few days ago. I am still in the process of settling in the truss/intonation ect, but I have noticed that when I play higher than the 12th fret, I get this this horrible 2-tone sound...almost like an out of tune chorus effect.... Even when the bass isn't plugged in, I can still hear it in the body!! What the hell could it be?! I've never come across this before with any basses that I've owned. I've tried holding as many different things with my fingers incase some piece of metal was vibrating, but I can't find the cause at all... It's so annoying as this bass feels, and, (apart from said problem), sounds F%*^ING AWESOME!!! Cheers guys. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

thisnameistaken Posted October 8, 2010 Share Posted October 8, 2010 Try lowering the pickup. I had something like this on my Jazz recently after I changed the bridge - the action had lowered a little but not much, but it was enough for the front pickup to mess with the thicker strings in very weird ways when I played higher up the neck. MoonBassAlpha Posted October 9, 2010 Share Posted October 9, 2010 Could be the truss rod is still slightly loose. Try rapping on the back of the neck with your knuckles and see if there is any sort of a rattle, you may need to take up some slack still more. I've seen this on an acoustic guitar before, and on my blue Masters bass. It has a pretty stiff neck (grapite rod reinforced), and doesn't need much tension to give the right relief.
