Mr. Foxen
Update to this, I just whipped out some forgotten strings from my meths bath, it has had many sets go through it, this set now have rust spots, so the meths is probably absorbing water from the air, and allowing strings to rust, so change your meths often, or at least don't leave strings in it for 6 months. JTUK
My meths just evaporates so that is the time to replace it... I don't do anything other than soak but then the strings are never rusty .. I wouldn't want to complicate things with wipes, so if the soak doesn't work..they string are put aside as not to be used on anything that matters. Gub cut the string down to 3 winds round the post.... the gauge figures here as well, but too long is better than too short. AFAICR..I leave a 4"/100mm tail to wind..typically..but you may want to be sure about this before cutting a NEW string.
