erisu
Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting a custom build. My decision at the moment is to buy a finished neck from Warmoth and have it shipped over from America. I will then send the neck to Martin at SIMS custom shop and have him build a custom bass body for me. Alternatively I can just have Martin build the entire bass for me... Which option would you guys go for? Which has the better quality of products? Initially I was going to go with Jon Shuker but I would need to wait 3 months for the bass to finish =/ Thanks all! Wil
Warmoth make amazing parts. No idea what the quality of SIMS custom is like though.

I'm also laughing behind my hand that John Shuker has quoted you 3 months to completion - a good friend of mine has been waiting nearly 2 years. There are many custom builders in the UK. There are lots of threads about them, try a search. Personally of the two options you give I'd let Martin do the whole thing.
Delberthot
Unless you're buying from the showcase on the Warmoth site, be prepared to wait a couple of months for it. It might be quicker depending on what you're after but from previous experience its not an overnight thing, plus yout have the time for it to leave Warmoth, get on a plane, get checked and charged by customs, pay the charges to release it and actually receive it. Having said that, their stuff is fantastic quality
JTUK
Depends on the costs, but I've seen what Sims can do and would have no problem having them do the work, myself

Say you fancied a P bass back then but your GAS/taste changed to a Jazz...gutted! I think i'd forget it was coming.
AttitudeCastle
SIMS are good but very expensive! I'd say warmoth! Martain is a great guy, very nice and easy to talk too though if you go for Sims
erisu
Thanks for the replies all. I did some calculations tonight and it's pretty much equal in costs after adding the custom and shipping costs from the U.S if I were to go with Warmoth. Toasted - Your mate waited 2 years?! I would take that bass to the grave with me if I had to wait for 2 years.
Ok that's a little excessive but that's kind of the point about getting a custom made bass... or at least it used to be... now you get custom mades up for sale a month after the joyously expectant bassist has his "ultimate machine" in his hands with all the "It's a fantastic bass but just not for me." taglines. BIG.J
Lol, I have been waiting for my Custom Headless Neck since September 2008 from CWG in the States> Still waiting... Good luck in whatever you decide. J.
charic
3 months is nothing! My ACG was 9 months... it was hell but worth it! Shuker 'tend' to take longer GB seem to have an insanely quick turnaround. Have you actually asked SIMS how long the body would take? Twigman
I've just been quoted 12 weeks + shipping time for my possible parts order from Warmoth.
