Funky can mean a lot of different things from 70's Fender Jazz through to Ken Smith. Actually, there's a really nice Ken Smith 5 for sale for 900 quid. I think its outstanding value for money.

£900 to buy a bass?

Fantastic situation to be in.

Go try every bass possible to narrow down the models/brands you might want... then check all the second hand stuff until you find one that "talks" to you. You should be able to get a pretty decent bass with that money, especially second hand.

Or... just skip all that and get a Stingray :)
Is it 900 for just the bass or plus a rig?

sorry not to sure what you mean by rig if you mean amp iv already got one
Sorry yes, I meant amp and cab(s). You will get a lot of bass for £900. I'm not sure you'll need to spend it all on a first bass like.

And I'll reiterate the above suggestion of a Stingray. :)

Funk is technically the way you play, and can be achieved by any competent player on any instrument. Some instruments certainly have more of a 'sound' associated with funk however and I'm guessing that is what you mean. A jazz bass is probably the way to go as these will have the type of sound you're after, but will still be versatile in other avenues of playing. With your budget you could look at possibly a Lakland, possibly even a used Sadowsky (if you're lucky). However, if you really want that 'funk' sound maybe the new Sterling range of Musicman Stingrays might fit the bill?

Bass Direct have a good range of second hand basses that might fit your budget and bill:

If you're considering something other than a Fender/MM have a look at some of the Warwicks. The range of sounds is terrific, especially with them being active, and there are lots about at sensible prices. There are many BCers who swear by them.

You may also be lucky enough to find a Jaydee within your budget - a bit less run of the mill.

For that authentic funky 70's sound think about a Trace Elliott amp - the combos are reasonably priced - though I understand there were some problems with those built in the 90s.
