Phil-osopher10
Hello my Irish commrades, I see some people in Ireland with a Epifani and Eden gear etc. etc. anyhu I would love to know if there is a good music shop in Ireland that has good equipment? Mog
Basically no. Most of the stores are middlemen and add serious €€€ to the rrp. I find its best to order from the UK/Europe.
Bigwan
There used to be (Rea Sound in Cookstown was probably the best for bass @ a time), but alas no more. I'd love to do the bass equivalent of Mr. Drums (Coleraine), but don't currently have the time, space or money! Oddly there seem to be more drummers out there than bass players - don't know how that works... (note to self: must go down and have a word with Rob @ Mr. Drums and see how feasible it would be to do it for bass...) I find an occasional trip to London the best way for a bass fix (The Gallery) although I've yet to visit BassDirect - kinda scared to really... Doctor J
It isn't a big enough market here to specialise, plus it'll always be cheaper to order from abroad. X-music in Ballymount in Dublin probably have the largest selection but it's still the usual brands, unfortunately, though they do have some EBS pedals so they might be able to get some amplification too if you grovel hard enough. Philip
If you need to try before buy there's nowhere. Mind you, from posts here, it looks like London is mostly not much use either. Otherwise, buying by post from UK or Europe works well enough. I've not had problems, anyway. What we need is a bass bash... anyone?
acidbass
A Bass Bash would be a great idea! Sadly I have to echo the sentiments of those above - there are no decent shops on this island to try out bass gear, unless of course you're after an Aria or a Westfield! Marcus Music in Belfast is closed now too, which used to be the best in the city for basses. I think Matchetts have a few £500+ basses in, but even at that, you aren't spoiled for choice. I think it would be difficult to organise this year, but perhaps early in 2011? I'll start a thread about it after Christmas. Matchetts have a few lower priced basses in stock, plus a few Warwicks, some Fenders and Squiers and a nice Stingray. Not great but I suppose the market just isn't there. They usually keep a decent range of Les Pauls, 335s, strats, teles etc so our 6 string brethren are better catered for. Frank.

Tradfusion
Ireland is brutal for buying decent bass gear... thats why we spend hours on forums like this and Talkbass reading reviews before we buy blind from somewhere online... price wise the UK aint too bad in general, or the big German stores like Thomann, Musikstore and Musik Schmidt are ok since they offer free shipping.. Buying out of the States is trickier, amps may or may not offer dual voltage but cabs, basses, pedals etc are grand so long as you know the customs boys will be happy to add on a lump of vat/tax when it arrives here.. acidbass
Marcus closed about a month ago, unfortunately. Two of the guys in my band are former employees, and they said it was coming for months. A real shame really as I noodled away many a good afternoon in there!

A real shame really as I noodled away many a good afternoon in there!
The attitude of some of the Marcus staff left much to be desired as I understand (not saying it's the same guys you know). I believe there was a bit of a boycott by the guys on fastfude - there was certainly a multipage rant about them anyway. A smile and being polite doesn't cost anything... Having said that they never did me any harm. Only time I really had any sort of conversation with any of the staff was when I pointed out they'd the wrong price on an Ibanez BTB they'd just put on the wall that minute - they were selling it at trade (guy said I probably saved his job)... that's years ago. They wouldn't want to have been relying on me for business - I gave up on most music shops here 10 years ago, just before I snagged a Wal off of TKM in Ballymena for peanuts (relatively speaking)!
