wateroftyne Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 From the FAQ's on Fender.com:
Is it possible to get a replacement decal for my old Fender instrument? In many cases, the answer is "YES!" To help us achieve the best match of available decals, take at least 4 clear photographs of your instrument, (the entire front, entire back of the instrument and a close-up of the front and back of the headstock). This will help us verify that it is indeed a genuine Fender product in need of a replacement decal, (if the instrument has the serial number stamped into the neck plate, please include a pencil "rubbing" from the neck plate showing this number). Next, take the photos along with your guitar to the nearest Authorized Fender Service Center, where they will evaluate the instrument. After comparing the instrument with the photos, they will then mail the photos and neck plate rubbing to our Product Support team in Scottsdale. Once we receive the photographs, we will try to find the most accurate decal for that instrument. We will then send the appropriate decal to the Authorized Service Center. Note: Decal availability is limited to certain models, and while Fender does not charge a fee for a replacement decal, the Fender Authorized Service Center may charge a fee for providing this service to you.
Quote

Wil Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Yep, ebay. Bear in mind that waterslide decals are a bitch to apply correctly. I totally ruined mine, ended up taking it off and leaving the headstock bare. Quote

Bass_Guardian Posted October 27, 2010 Author Posted October 27, 2010 Is there anyone on this forum who can apply headstock decals professionally? No offense Wil Quote

lemmywinks Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Could just make your own, if you have a access to colour inkjet printer it's really easy. A sheet of clear waterslide decal paper is about £3 and you can get about 10 or more decals on it I have a .pub or .jpg document with J, P and Tele Bass logos on if you fancy? I just googled the logos and saved the image, then cleaned it up in an image editing program Results are exactly the same as what you'd spend a tenner on from eBay Quote

JTUK Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 I was talking to the maker of my bass and he authenticated the bass and ok'd a third party to do it. The third party was a trusted source who do work for the maker anyway but to strip the laquer off the bass and re-apply would take anything from a day to a week..depending...!! Not expensive, just time with a laid up bass etc ..to do the job properly. Quote
Delberthot Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 (edited) I buy stuff from these guys from time to time. They do a lot of different printable paper. http://www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk/ In fact my Goth T-Bird now has a white scratchplate which is simply white matt adhesive paper with the bicentennial Bird on it stuck over the original Edited October 28, 2010 by Delberthot Quote
dr1 Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I have two Fender (1964. style) Jazz Bass decals if someone is interested. I bought them several months ago - I wanted to change headstock logo on my HW1 jazz bass (to have it look more like '60 jazz bass, you know) at the end of the day, I changed my mind about all that and sold the bass eventually. so, the decals (genuine!) are at ny home now and I'd sell them for reasonable price. http://thedecalshop.co.uk/ Cheers.
+1 for the decal shop - but I'm not the world's most clumsy person and I messed up two(!) large late-60s/early-70s style logos trying to do it the way he suggested, they're just too damn big to manoeuvre easily without tearing. I think there must be a bit of a knack to it and it's potentially quite expensive to get good at. Annoyingly, had no troubles with the smaller practice bits he included. It's very easy to scratch the inks off as well, especially the gold, even just excessive wrinkling of the decal seems to lead to small imperfections. If anyone's got any hints and tips I'd appreciate them. Had most luck using paintbrushes, am thinking a really big one that'll just let me lay the logo on flat might be the way to go. Quote
