mmmh, first thought is that i'm glad i didn't lose sleepless nights - doesn't capture the essential visual character of the '51. Glad I bought the '51 reissue from Clarky - zero regrets!!
I wonder if the '51 reissue you've bought from Clarky is the one I just sold to him last Oct 2010. is it this one by any chance?
yip - pretty sure it will be - lollar pickup?

Clarky had the silverware on , but although I like the look I've taken it off as it " felt funny" especially when playing with a pick.

Pickup - 1 Lollar single coil custom order

(there is a big song and dance about this pickup in a thread somewhere in this forum, involving an exchange of emails between me and Jason Lollar, I was asking him to wire the pickup extra hot to match the output of a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound, he was reluctant to do it and I played a game of putting him on the spot by kinda challenging him to break the norm and that after all he is considered by musicians as a "boutique" artisan and that he should be flexible, and "groovie baby" (he is a bit of a hippy after all, child of the 60's) and to set himself some challenges and after many emails he agreed I waited 3 months but the result is that the pickup is unique in the world and it's sh|t hot :)

Thanks a million for that - much appreciated & thanks also to Clarky. Yes a bit heavy but solid - bit strange that to help finance i sold a Precision Lyte!( to a basschatter btw)
Not as heavy as my Aria SB 600 - that is a beast!

I often see these comments about heavy basses..... Just get a wide thick strap and you can forget about it!!

Surely the most important thing is .... does it give you the sound you want?

Maybe, but those people were just talking about the P in general, not the 60th Anniversary.

The more I look at it, the more it looks like a cut'n'shut... ah, well.

the bass reminds me of a mexican fender a friend of mine had and I've seen it appear on this site. the name escapes me, I vaguely remember it being active with a 51 style plate.
EDIT- cowpoke!

Some day... some dark, dark day... Fender are going to run out of tiny changes they can make to repackage 60 year old designs.

I'm going wait until they take the modern P bass scratchplate design and stick a single coil in it. 70th, 80th anniversary?

I'll wait.
it's also very similar to the new Lakland offerings

I wonder how many will be bought to play and how many as "investments" TBH if I had the cash I might go for the later myself.

Anyone seen how many of these are going to be produced?
I know it's become their trademark design, but I really dislike the look of those bridges specially on that type of bass. Shame.
Especially with the SC with ashtray. you'd have thought they would have come up with a bridge and ashtray to tie it all in .
And something else begs the question "Why going through all that trouble to mimic a classic design and not make the headstock in the telecaster fashion?" It looks like a bit of a bodged effort to me, doesn't it?
The 'blonde' Japanese RI was a hideous colour - that's the only thing that let it down.
Each to their own, luckily yellow is my favourite colour so I love the look, especially with a white pickguard.

But you are right that the model was let down by the finish, it would have been nice to have had a more period correct lacquer to compliment the other vintage-style features.

The new anniversary model lacks all the little idiosyncrasies that made the Japanese RI so likeable (single coil pick up, two saddle bridge, vintage neck radius, headstock etc), Fender seem to be paying homage their history by presenting the most boring and conservative configuration of a precision.

Also I was was looking at the video that Fender made for the bass:

http://www.fender.com/products/60th-pbass/...?prodNo=0196002

In the background during two of the shots was a seafoam or sherwood green slab bodied precision bass hung on the wall. Why on earth didn't they release that as the anniversary bass? I would have sold the wife in a shot to buy that.

The green one also appears to be able to morph from righty to lefty at will going by your screen caps!!! :)

Agreed- seems a bit of a cheat. wouldn't it be better to package it as something else or new - perhaps it's like one of these dodgy film remakes that are described as a " re-imagining" :)

Um. Ugh. Well, if anyone's looking for a bass to compliment their Squier '51 guitar, it'll do the trick...

I like the look a lot. If it were half the price I'd be tempted.

My guitarist has a Squier 51 to match.
