andytoad
Hi all, Do you have recommendations for my brother in law, whom is a newly converted bassist. He has been dabbling with a cheapy, buy now wants to get a little more serious, he has £500 (now he has sold hid guitar stuff). The bass he is after would have: a Les Paul/SG type look Natural wood/sunburst in colour 4 string easy/fast neck (he is a little chap, so would struggle with big tree trunk necks) Funky/Punchy any ideas? I guess the look is the least improtant because a Les Paul/SG look is a Les Paul or SG!
josh3184
only problem is that there aren't a huge amount of quality Les Paul / SG basses. See if he'll take some other shapes and then he's got a load of fantastic basses for that price range.
waynepunkdude
For that money I'd go for a SUB Sterling if he can find one.
lemmywinks
Agreed. "Funky" and "punchy" aren't the first words that come to mind when i think of LP/SG basses! The word that does is "mud"! The only one i've liked was an Ltd SG/Viper shape with massive EMG humbuckers in. Sounded huge but was a bit too metal-looking for me Here y'are, ESP/Ltd Les Paul and SG shapes: http://www.espguitars.com/basses_ec.html http://www.espguitars.com/basses_viper.html Pretty sure the one i played had massive Musicman style pickups with exposed pole-pieces so may have been an older model Edited November 3, 2010 by lemmywinks
Gust0o
I'd love to see him get a BC Rich Eagle, or Seagull - funky, solid-shapes. Not sure how much change he'd get out of £500 for a decent one. My two: Or a smattering: No idea where you'd find one; however, it was as good an opportunity as any to show decent BCRs are not all points. If you get one, you're my hero What about the ESP? Ltd Les Paul? I know Epiphone do a few flavours also - Goth, which isn't my cup of tea; standard; and a nice up-market version, which looked just the trick for a keeper. If you look about a bit there was one just posted, asking about prices on one - might be worth a dip in?

People often overestimate how hard a bass is to play looking at this. as others said... funky/punchy and SG/LP don't match well. I'd look into a second hand Warwick Corvette, or even their Rockbass series. Or a MusicMan SUB4. In fact make this first choice. Great neck, punchy, punky... no solid wood 'though, butwho cares when it sounds this good?

Cheers for your opions chaps, i shall keep you informed when he makes a purchase. i originally thought SUB, but i guess he has got to get out there and try a few! I think he will be taken by the ESP!
